the end of hot air dryers?

Day out trip today and visiting the toilets noticed that the hot air blowers/dryers were taped out of action.
Another thing we'll have to get use to I presume?

I never use them. In the hygiene training I had years ago (and every few years since), I was told that only paper towels are hygienic. Failing that, I wipe my hands on a tissue or the inside of my top.

PinkCakes- neither do I. I wash and leave as quickly as possible. All those germs wafting around. I just wave my hands around outside if there isn’t a paper towel and I’ve run out of tissues.
Good thing if they are taped up forever.

Yes but until yesterday they were saving paper and forests! I haven't been using them since all this, just leaving my hands wet or using my own tissue.

I am relieved (geddit?) that you were able to visit public loos anyway as had been under the impression that they were all closed. (I don’t get out much).

Alima loos in supermarkets are all open. In towns there is usually at least one open. I guess loos in stores will now reopen as well, with distancing and enhanced cleaning in place.

It's a bit bonkers to tell us to keep washing our hands and then close the washrooms. I have a little micofibre travel towel that I may carry in future. Even a clean, dry face flannel would do.

All hot air driers ever did was blow bacteria around.

I have used the grey and yellow ones in which you move your hands up and down and received a face full of water vapour. Never again!!

I was told a while back that they weren't hygienic by a school nursse. She reckoned they blew the bacteria around and warmed them up nicely.I

I suppose this is why they are taped up. I just flap my hands about. Thank goodness for open public loos where we can wash hands. Hampshire has been good for open toilets.

If you and, most importantly, everyone else who uses these things have washed their hands thoroughly then there would be no problem.
But they don’t. Get out of the public Loos if there are being use ASAP!
Bluesky, they use lots of energy.

Went to my John Lewis yesterday, loos were open and air dryers still in use. They must use a lot of electricity. Why aren't paper towels made out of recycled paper?

Might be a good idea to carry a man sized hankie in your bag from now on to dry hands on. Just a thought.

BlueSky Wed 17-Jun-20 11:20:51

They were introduced to save paper and the forests, cheaper and more hygienic than laundry. I guess places with these dryers in use will have to source suppliers of recycled paper towels or whatever method they deem to be cheap and environmentally friendly.

If you have your own hand sanitiser better to use that instead then you don’t need to touch taps or use hand dryers.

I always have a small guest towel or a face flannel in my bag. Never use the hot air. When I'm travelling by air I keep a small towel and a tube of handcream in a side pocket of my backpack. The handcream has to go in the liquids bag for security check but is put back with the towel as soon as I'm through. Don't know when I'll be flying again, though.

Grannysyb, I think there's a good chance that paper towels are made of recycled paper. I can find out from my contacts in John Lewis!

I've not used air dryers for years because of the reasons above.
