Denim: An indispensable wardrobe addition.

Hi all,
I had my denim jacket on today and realised how versatile and essential denim is. I wouldn't be without my denim jacket and my jeans (skinny stretch, all colours, but I would love some embroidered ones). My denim jacket is my go to jacket for what I call effortless chic (my everyday type), and is absolutely perfect with a nice scarf. I keep meaning to pick up a denim skirt to wear with an off the shoulder top, too. I don't actually know why I'm going on about denim, but I adore denim. X

No way - dark indigo jeans and a crisp white shirt - or Breton top - unbeatable!
With scarlet wedges, espadrilles or white trainers

Would I be right in thinking you are quite a bit younger than most of us FlyingHandbag ?
A mistake many older women make is to stick to “safe” pastels.

FlyingHandbag Tue 23-Jun-20 15:19:12

I mean they look very harsh when paired with an otherwise pale outfit. X

Strident
confused

Whatever do you mean FlyingHandbag?

Bold, confident, sharp, edgy even - all of these, but how strident ?

DiscoGran Tue 23-Jun-20 14:36:33

I like jeans, they are comfy and I wear them a lot.
Don't like denim jackets though. Definitely not a good look over a certain age. Can think of a lot more flattering styles/fabrics.

strident - loud, forceful

No. I just thought that darker colours were more slimming!

Strident, loud jeans - why did I think of f**ts?

FlyingHandbag Tue 23-Jun-20 10:56:14

Am I the only one that thinks dark jeans can look strident sometimes? They are nice if wearing a dark top but I would wear mid wash with a pale top. X

I quite agree, @MawB.

Unless you already are of elephantine proportions, well-fitting and preferably dark indigo jeans will not make you look any larger or lumpier. Though I make an exception for the IMO obnoxiously-named ‘mom’ jeans, ugh, intended anyway to be baggy and shapeless.

Well fitting indigo jeans can be dressed up with a nice top/jacket to look perfectly smart - I’ve frequently worn them to some exceedingly smart London restaurants a generous BiL invites us to when he’s on a business trip here.

It occurred to me about 18 months ago that I no longer actually possessed any winter-suitable trousers that weren’t jeans! Had to go and buy some trousers (navy!) suitable for attending a late October wedding.
(You can tell that dressed-up is not my thing at all.)

I have a denim shirt which I love and it doubles as a jacket over a summer dress. I bought a button through denim dress from H and M in January, wore it with a polo neck sweater under, then t shirt under for spring and now on its own. I think as others have said here, denim needs to be well made and fit well. I do not like rips or off the shoulder now I am in my 70s but each to their own if you want to flaunt it, go for it!

Love the denim jacket over floral dress, complete with cross body bag and trainers! At any age!

Lucca Tue 23-Jun-20 08:29:14

Envious of that dress vegansrock...where is it from ?

vegansrock Tue 23-Jun-20 03:58:41

I wear jeans all the time, they are supremely comfortable. I’ve lots of different styles and colours. My favourites are the high waisted straight legged ones from Uniqlo. They have some Lycra in, so a bit of stretch and fit really well. I have 3 pairs of those in different colours. I also have a denim dress, which you can wear with a t shirt or sweater underneath, with or without a belt, with leggings , so versatile. A denim jacket looks great over a floral dress. Wardrobe essential surely? I’ve also got some dungarees and culottes in denim too.

Freeandeasy Tue 23-Jun-20 03:13:36

Everyone can wear jeans no matter what your age, surely!! I dress mine up with a tailored blazer and scarf and dress down with a plain tee-shirt. I’m 64 and I’ve been told I look good by my step daughters.

Poppyred Tue 23-Jun-20 01:15:19

Love denim. Denim jeans and denim jacket, but never together.

mrsmopp Tue 23-Jun-20 00:01:55

I have two pairs of denim jeans at the back of my wardrobe. I haven’t worn them for ages. I’m waiting for them to come back into fashion because they are flares. I know if I throw them out they will suddenly be the next big thing and all the rage. Everyone will want them. What goes around comes around. (I think) along with platform soles??

elasticated back easy fit trousers
Casdon this made me laugh for some reason. X

Casdon Mon 22-Jun-20 22:23:47

What a judgmental daughter LadyBella. I can’t imagine my life without jeans, they fit my criteria completely - and of course they are classy, a lot more so than the elasticated back easy fit trousers so many older ladies resort to.

I'm galloping through my 70's and have two denim jackets. The thicker one is probable "vintage" now but I love it. I also have a dressier (if there is such a word) one from Rohan which I wear with smarter clothes. Wore it to DGS first communion last year with a dress - haven't worn a dress for years but it felt really comfortable which is my benchmark as opposed to style! I also have a fair selection of jeans in varying shades of blue but wouldn't wear light or very dark ones.

BlueSky Mon 22-Jun-20 21:45:40

Well said FlyingHandbag ! Age is just a number!

FlyingHandbag Mon 22-Jun-20 21:20:32

LadyBella

I value my daughter's opinion. She has taste and tells me what NOT to wear - jeans, leggings and denim jackets are, in her opinion, only for the young. I tend to agree. Those things definitely aren't classy.

I think jeans are for everyone, as long as they are well cut and flatter you. Age is just a number. Just because you are of a certain age doesn't mean you have to wear cheap beige pull on trousers or twin sets. X

I live in jeans all summer , and cords in winter. I am 82 and don’t feel that I am too old or fat to wear denim !

grannyrebel7 Mon 22-Jun-20 18:33:54

Love my jeans and could never be without them!

phoenix Mon 22-Jun-20 18:23:24

Tears, not years!

phoenix Mon 22-Jun-20 18:22:59

Still seeing denim, but not "double denim" i.e. denim top with denim jeans!

Don't get this thing for jeans with rips/years in them though!

Have seen some wearing jeans with what looks like whole sections cut out from the knee area!shockconfused

FlyingHandbag Mon 22-Jun-20 18:13:36

Nanof3

I have never worn jeans as any I tried on were uncomfortable and if you are larger than a size 10 make you look like an elephant.

What a ridiculous thing to say! You need well cut, well made jeans that flatter you, like everyone. X
