“Signalling”

We have had , in the past, a few threads about “virtue signalling”
Am I the only one, or does anyone agree with me that we now have quite a few posts “ wealth signalling “?
I may be completely wrong and to talk about possessions, travel etc is normal.
I will be happy to be proved wrong.

Sparklefizz That’s not so much boasting as blatant ‘humblebragging’grin

My cousin has always been boastful.
The latest boast is that her grandson is very picky with food and will only eat Waitrose brand of Taramasalata! grin

When my Dad relocated here he bought a washer-dryer for his new flat.
He puts dry (but dirty) washing in and takes dry (but clean) washing out.
Now that I would find bizarre!

You all have washing machines?! Wealth signalling or what!?

Callistemon Mon 06-Jul-20 12:59:05

I've given the staff the day off and today actually had to hunt down some little wooden and plastic contraptions which hold clothes on what is called a washing line!
Goodness, it was tiring.

DanniRae Mon 06-Jul-20 12:04:36

But Callistemon I have to turn a knob and press a button to get my washing machine to work!!
That's pretty tiring you know........and some days I have to do it twice shock

Callistemon Mon 06-Jul-20 10:11:34

I do hope you have the staff to use them, Oopsminty and don't actually have to load them yourself!

Oh, my washing machine is beeping at me.
It's an upgrade on my mum's dolly tub, that's when housework was work!

Oopsminty Mon 06-Jul-20 10:09:13

DanniRae

Oopsminty - so that's why it's out of stock!

Oh dear!

Me and my panic buying ;-)

I do apologise to all you lovely ladies/men who are waiting for an email telling you they're back in stock!

Callistemon Mon 06-Jul-20 10:07:49

The components in a lot of 'white' goods are all the same according to the engineers who came to repair my new freezer and the other engineer who had to come (twice) to sort out my new tumble dryer.

Both higher, but not absolute top, range goods. AEG.
I really should have bought cheap models and had a holiday with the change!

harrigran Mon 06-Jul-20 09:11:58

When I first got married my father said to me "buy cheap, buy twice", he urged me to save up for a quality product. My first baby was a year old before I had a washing machine but hey it was a nice one.

Wealth or how much money people have doesn’t seem to bother me all that much. I do get het up if I think they are using their wealth to buy power though, that is undemocratic and unfair. A lot of that about.

The sort of “wealth” on GN whether signalled or not is small beer quite honestly and nothing to be worried about.

Happiness, now that is something we should all aim for.

MawB

I know - might get two, a spare can be so useful!

Quite!

We have one in the stables, one in the laundry room and another spare

You can never have too much of a good thing

EllanVannin Mon 06-Jul-20 08:27:08

Too many things to go wrong grin I don't do complicated.

DanniRae Mon 06-Jul-20 08:21:22

Just had a look at this 5* washing machine and it's out of stock!
Hands up all the Gransnetters who have ordered one after seeing it on here....... grin

GrandmasueUK Mon 06-Jul-20 02:15:56

Ah but MawB the one I saw had another smaller machine underneath!

The top one can do up to 70 shirts and the bottom one is for socks and/or lingerie. I'm thinking the top one if you have a boys' boarding school (but just wondering what kind of matron has so much lingerie!) grin Just imagine ironing 70 shirts though - argh!

"There was a post recently about a very expensive washing machine.

It didn’t bother me, I was just astounded as I hadn’t realised you could get one that cost so much!

But each to his own."

It was me who mentioned the expensive washing machine, it was an LG Signature at £2,600! I was just fascinated by it.

I also said that it wasn't the one I went for. Mine was far cheaper!

I think someone was ripping you off grandmasue
I found it for £1k less.

Grandmasue Presumably at that price, the machine collects all your dirty washing, switches itself on, and dries and folds the laundry for you grin

What is signalling?
I've never heard the term, thankfully by the length of this thread! ?
