Oh no!
Could he have used the greenery to hop his way up to the wall and then start fledging?
I am procrastinating and need to stop!
My Victorian house has a fireplace in my bedroom one of those rather lovely old bedroom black lead fireplaces with a trapdoor
Well I m lying in bed hearing a lot of scuffling behind the trapdoor and realise a bird has fallen down the chimney so I pulled the curtains right back and opened the window then opened the trapdoor and there is a largish bird I can’t see its head just it’s legs and a bit of the body but the darned thing is sitting there not coming out I think it may be a rather large young seagull and I m a bit loathe to stick my arm in to get it out but I also can’t sleep with it sitting there
Watch this space
Oh no!
Could he have used the greenery to hop his way up to the wall and then start fledging?
No to all those question seagulls normally fledge August and he had no tail feathers or flight feathers still only fluff He could only climb as high as his leg could reach
The greenery is mostly low lying stuff loads of Nerines, things that make lots and lots of leaves but ground level nothing strong he could climb into or onto
I just got home from work and gone round and round the garden again lifting all the greenery ...absolutely nothing
His food is untouched I would have expected a cat to eat it his mum is on my roof watching me but not talking or screeching There’s not a feather or mark anywhere it’s like he never existed
I can’t believe anything could get him over my 6 ft walls without a sign of struggle
I hate mysteries but he’s gone and I guess I ll never know
He was with me 10 days
? Fingers crossed that he’s OK ???? You did a wonderful job looking after him, but I’m sure you’ll always wonder about him.
Oh no BlueBelle, that's so sad for you. I hope that he turns up, you must be very worried. Fingers crossed.

The trouble is that, with webbed feet, they have difficulty climbing and clinging on twigs etc although they can climb steep roofs.
I was just clinging to straws, really, Callistemon.
I’m so sorry, Bluebell. He may turn up yet but whatever the ending, you’ve been so kind to a defenceless creature and given pleasure to lots of Gransnetters, too.
?I got home from work no food eaten, searched and searched again, my garden is really quite small and there’s no way he could have got over 6 ft high walls and no sign of a body or any feathers or blood
Nothing at all in the alley ways or anywhere around outside
It’s just like he neve4 existed I miss his little call at my door
Ah well I ll have to just forget, he had 10 days extra life ..... I tried
I haven't read the whole thread but while you were at work couldn't he just have learned to fly and gone off with his mum?
I wish it was that simple
nottooold no completely impossible he won’t fledge till August he had no flight feathers and no tail yet, still fluffy so impossible fir him to get off the ground until at least another three four or five weeks If you look at the photos you will see he’s not a fledgling hes a baby
It's no good, Bluebelle, you're going to have to call the police and report him missing.
Oh, I hope he turns up safe.
Haha missA I ve just got to get used to the idea he’s gone and I ll never know how or why
Oh so sad, I do feel for you Bluebelle. I was so hoping he'd appear. I hate it when you never know what happened.
You did much more than most would have done. You gave him a good chance.
Just read this thread, and hats off to you BlueBell! You have done your absolute best, and it seems the poor little one has met misfortune. Perhaps an owl or other night critter.
Nature can have cruel outcomes, but you indeed did give him a good chance.
I can understand how you must feel....in fact I feel quite down about it just reading!
You did your best, and in fact even had he been up on the roof....a similar fate may have awaited sadly.
So sad Bluebelle. I’ll pop in tomorrow just in case.
Flipping eck, I feel gutted for the little fella. Has any other seagull had so many people rooting for him? Really hoping he's ok BlueBelle
You did your best for him Bluebelle.
I m still holding out hope that he hasn’t been harmed I live on a main road with cars all going down the back and front of my house there’s precious little wildlife around apart from seagulls, pigeons and small birds There’s not one feather anywhere so I m really hopeful he hasn’t been hurt
Two people have told me that seagulls can swoop down and grab their young It was raining 24 hours did the mum swooped down to get him? she is still up there on my chimney But not calling any more
I m guessing of course ....
I guess I ll never know and no more pictures of Stephen I m afraid
I'm hoping that no news is good news.
me too. Chin up BlueBell,
Ahh, I've just read all this and seen the fab pictures. I want to think that, like your friends have said, his/her mum's taken Stephen off home and 'grounded' him so to speak, and given him a stern talking to. Going off without permission, having adventures with ladies, eating foreign food....
No, if I were his mum I'd be keeping a close eye on him too
Just checking in to see if there's any news..
Is the mum still around, BlueBelle ?
I'm really sorry to put a dampener on things, but I live in Devon and seagulls are a real pest down here. When they are nesting the parents are very aggressive and can attack people and animals at random. There was one young girl on a pier eating an ice cream. A seagull swooped down to grab it and in her panic she fell 20 feet over the side of the pier and was seriously injured. In Exeter they rip up all the dustbin bags the moment they're put out leaving the streets a terrible mess. I don't undersand why they are a protected species, they are thousands and thousands of them down here. If they just stuck to the seaside it wouldn't be so bad, but they invade every town and village down here. My husband calls them flying rats.
alishka since he went I ve not seen the mum that’s why I keep my hopes up that she got him
evie you can put all the dampeners you want I will still consider all the gulls beautiful birds I live right by the seas and beach, Gulls were never a problem when I was growing up they have become a problem since humans decided to constantly eat and drink in the street, and to throw the remnants of their food wherever they want, our own filthy habits have evolved a beautiful, fish eating bird into a scavenger We have overfished and no fishing boats left for the gulls to follow and eat the fisherman’s thrown out remnants
We have no fishing any more
They ve had to go inland to survive
As always humans have caused this problem then moan and groan and deride the animals
I'm sitting in my dining room looking out of the window . There are 2 seagulls looking at me. One comes into my back yard and wanders around all of the time. I wonder if he is the one who wandered into the kitchen when he was a fledgling ? And then calmly wandered out! I'm on the coast in Yorkshire BTW, I love to see them . It's such a shame that some people think they are not worthy of protection especially when you consider that human beings make such a bloody mess of the world.
