I can understand the need to wear masks, but I find it very difficult to understand what people are saying when they are wearing one, so I'm not looking forward to it to be honest .

Face Masks in shops
(341 Posts)How do other readers feel about wearing face masks in shops? We are fortunate enough that our daughter who lives nearby has insisted on doing our food shopping for us and what with the odd delivery we have not needed to go into a shop since lock down. I realise that we do need to start going out to shops soon, keeping as safe as we can. I was quite relieved when it was announced on Friday that Boris Johnson seemed to hint that wearing face masks might be made mandatory as Scotland and many other countries have done. I then heard Michael Gove say that wearing face masks should not be mandatory but rather should be worn to show good manners. My question is surely good manners do not come into it if I wear a face mask to protect others, surely I should be able to expect the same from everyone else to protect me. I know that face masks are not the only preventative measure but surely anything and everything that helps should be done.
I agree totally with Dancinjay.
I wear glasses and had the same problem. I invested in masks for myself and my husband that have nose wires thus you can shape them over the bridge of your nose so that your breath doesn't fog your eyewear.
We must wear face covering in shops from the 24th July. That's okay for me because I have been wearing face covering for about 10 weeks in shops, even though my neighbours laughed at me when they saw me going out shopping with a face covering on.
What is the difference of wearing a face covering in a shop
than in the pub? The concept is the same you are in an enclosed space and near to other people.
I've just ordered a couple of boxes off ebay---now for the surgical gloves.
I had already bought an assortment of face masks as I thought it wouldn’t be long before they became mandatory. I’ve yet to find one that doesn’t steam my glasses up - for some reason the one which has a vent - like a bottle top as someone mentioned was the worst offender ?! I got some off the internet like the one Boris wore yesterday and quite frankly when they arrived I took one look at them and thought they weren’t a lot of good as they are so thin although they are comfortable to wear.
Unfortunately taking my glasses off isn’t an option for me as I can’t see far enough to walk down the road or round a shop without them.
Some people spit when they talk. Many's the time I have taken a step back if someone has started up a conversation in a queue. I could have done with a mask a few times----or an umbrella
Please can I make a plea that you consider toddlers when buying a mask. Some of them are terrified by dark covered faces, buy or make something pretty or pale coloured. (even the men!) It is hard enough for the the poor little ones being unable to hug their loved family members and being told to stay away, they don't need nightmares on top.
I have only just started going out and wear a mask in shops. I agree with MawB that saving lives is the most important aim.
Incidentally, for those worried about breathing, there is a surgeon on Fb who has attached himself to an oxymeter to demonstrate that wearing a mask has absolutely no effect on oxygen saturation levels whatsoever.
Medical and nursing staff have worn masks for years without complaint and we all know how overheated hospitals can be. I nursed for over 40 years and can honestly say that I have never ever heard any staff in the hospital objecting to wearing a mask, nor relatives/friends visiting a patient whose condition required barrier nursing.
For the sake of saving lives, I think a bit of discomfort is to be tolerated
I can't believe that it has taken the government so long to make this announcement. This is just a reflection of the decision making process as a whole and a pointer to why we have struggled so much
Not sure if that would work. Surely the whole idea is to prevent us breathing out droplets which may be inhaled by others?
I'm buying a shield. I can't get on with masks and I figure that if it protects me from stuff coming in, surely it must protect others from my stuff coming out! I watched yesterday (from a position of safety) whilst people walked up to stores, looked at the hand sanitiser and then carried on without using it. All the time we have idiots doing that, coming too close to you in shops and just generally not caring, it makes sense.
As for smiling at shop assistants, that is covered too, dancingjay.
The tip from Wheniwasyourage definitely works!

@Riggie It maybe just me but I wear scarves normally and found I simply forgot to pull them up over my face on entering a shop hence the masks.
Its face coverings not masks so those who have problems with masks could try a scarf bandit style which leave the chin area free, or wrapma scarf arlund several times.
Here in Orkney we have had a total incidence of 9 positive results of Covid-19 since records began. However, our population of 22,000 is exceeded several times over by visitors, and especially cruise ship passengers from all over the world, every year. DH and I have been wearing gloves - we sanitise the gloves and baskets on entering each shop - and masks unbidden for weeks now so that it will be second nature when the visitors begin to return. We are gradually learning to reduce the fiddling and adjusting, cope with the steamed up glasses and finding the most efficient way to divest ourselves of gloves and masks safely before entering our home so they go straight in the bin and washing machine (at 60 degrees). We have bought ourselves unusual masks - doves of peace, the strawberry thief, thistles and a colorful leopards' head so far - to make it fun. Our son thought the one with the leopard, which is on white fabric, looked like a posing pouch which gave rise to some hilarity.... I hope I don't catch the virus but neither do I want to infect others. We are not OCD by nature and have always been very relaxed on the housework front but this is a very serious situation, people, and we must do what we can to keep each other safe.
I have made myself some fabric masks and given a few away to my family or friends. As soon as the news about face coverings was announced yesterday, i got several texts from friends asking if I would make them some masks - one friends asked me for 12 so that each of her family had three each! Not going to happen! I will make some more but am running out of elastic and nose clips so people will have to provide their own!

Was the government worried that compulsory wearing of masks would deter shoppers and further delay the boost to the economy? It must be galling for the PM etc that they've finally had to follow Ms Sturgeon in this regard.
I made the old-fashioned washable surgical masks for all the family months ago, in the expectation that this would be introduced. Pipe-cleaner insert to put across the bridge of the nose, ties not elastic more comfortable for wearers of glasses.
Absolutely agree with the wearing of masks. We are wearing them when ever we leave the house and I have health problems too, asthma. If I ever found out that I had passed the virus onto others I for one would be mortified. Don't forget masks are to help prevent YOU passing on bugs, that is if worn properly and not with nose poking out or around your neck sorry folks it does work that way.
Aerica55 when you say there is 'scientific evidence' can you quote which studies you are talking about please? I think results have been a bit inconclusive and we need to know size of study and number of cases before we can judge.
I’m glad face masks are going to be compulsory in shops - I don’t understand the delay for it to be enforced! I’ve been shielding for months and after it ends on August 1st it’ll give me some reassurance if and when I feel safe to go to shops that people are wearing them.
