Foolish supermarket purchase

Got my delivery today and instead of 4 bananas, I'd ordered 4 packs - (5 in each)! Grr.

Now trying to find other recipes as well as banana bread!

I realise I should compulsively check each shopping list!

I also mistakenly once ordered 22 leeks instead of 2 but the supermarket phoned me up to check, as they were huge. Two of them filled one carrier bag and they said that they thought they were going to have to put on another van, just for my order. grin

I ordered online for myself and a couple of neighbours who both have dogs and were shopping for the month. The delivery driver was a bit nervous as obviously though I was hiding a pack of dogs somewhere in my house!

As others have said, the substitutions can be quite amusing. In fact, if something goes out of stock between your first making the order and then deciding to add to it, you are shown 'suggested' alternatives (on Tesco's site, anyway).

A few weeks back, I had initially put flour in my trolley. A few days later it was out of stock and the suggested substitution was a packet of lemon cake mix. Of all the thousands of things that I might have wanted to make with the flour, why did it pick that one? Of course, if I had actually been planning to use it for a lemon cake, I would have wondered how on earth they had known, and if my tablet was bugged! grin

Remind me not to do online deliveries grin Goodness knows how many fillet steaks I'd end up with.shock

It was in a newspaper not long ago that M&S were going to begin a delivery service----oh I hope so because I'd have no qualms about that. They'd be rushed off their feet !

Bananas make a wonderful ice cream. Banana cookies are lovely and chewy. Xx

My daughter ordered 8 mushrooms (the large ones for stuffing). When her delivery came the delivery driver asked her if she really wanted 8 packs of mushrooms!

When I let my 2ic do the end of year order he ordered 300 exercise books, not realising he'd ordered 300 packs of 20! Luckily the company took therm back.

Cross posted with Maggie May - same friend??!!

Not a supermarket but a well known auction site; my friend ordered a beautiful hand made chest of drawers. She couldn’t believe how inexpensive it was, only £50.
She excitedly waited in for the delivery to be handed a very small box by the courier- it was for a doll’s house!
She has it artful displayed! ??
(The dimensions were clearly stated in the listing ??‍♀️)

Best accidental online order was my friend. Shewas always ditzy which we loved about her, and she happily admitted it, but never more so than the day she ran round to me crying with laughter.
It was the early days of Ebay, and she had decided on getting a lovely lamp for her bedroom.
She said she had found a real bargain, for £1.50, and she couldn't wait, better than charity shops she exclaimed!
Until it turned up and it was for a dolls house.
She hadn't bothered reading the print, had bought it so fast before anyone else snapped up her 'find of the century!'
It almost killed me when she bought it down the Legion in her purse a week later...I was crying!!

You can refuse stuff at the door, especially if you've made a mistake like that.
I'm not sure what I'd do with all those bananas ??‍♀️.
If you had a dehumidifier you could make banana chips?

I did that too with bananas. Banana loaves freeze well .I've a good recipe using oats which is also gluten free.. Found it on the internet. Just type in easy banana bread recipe.

Bananas Foster yum.

I have a similar problem with bananas, but it’s quite exciting each week to see whether I have ordered 4 or 4 kilograms! I find avocados a challenge. I either have to limit myself to one per week or a pack of four where When eating one per day, 2 are edible, one only half edible and the fourth straight in the bin. Unfortunately my husband doesn’t like them.

KnittyNannie Tue 14-Jul-20 11:17:47

I’ve done that before - more than once. Let the bananas ripen a bit, then peel and freeze. You can make banana bread whenever you want to - or in our case chocolate and banana cake.

When lockdown first started, I ordered 12 bananas for our family of four to last for a week - only to be told that I could only order three bananas. I was then told that I could order three bags of six bananas if that was better. It was!!

A couple of weeks before lockdown a friend did her 1st on line shop, she wanted a pack of 12 loo rolls, but ordered 12 , so got 144 !!! A lucky mistake as it turned out as we all knew where to go if we needed any ??

You can also dry sliced bananas, on a very low temperature in the oven,if you don’t have a dehydrator. They’ll last for ages, can be eaten as they are as a snack, or rehydrated for cooking

Nicolaed Tue 14-Jul-20 10:44:39

Thank your lucky stars, you could have had them substituted and got a box of bandanas! I've had some weird substitutions, chicken for scampi, tinned peas for tinned pears and a white loaf for white bread mix. It's certainly been entertaining and a lucky dip when deliveries arrive!

GrandmasueUK Tue 14-Jul-20 10:44:06

Thank you for all the ideas on what to do with the bananas. I'm onto the banana bread later, made with ground almonds, instead of flour. I've done it before and it was delicious. I'm going to freeze some as well. Looking forward to banana 'ice cream'!

Kittye Tue 14-Jul-20 10:42:39

Re returning to delivery driver . I don’t think you’re allowed to do that at the moment?

Early on in lockdown my daughter and I were sharing an online order. I didn’t quite understand the system and when we thought we’d amended the order, it actually saved the changes as a new order, as well as adding it to the old one. When it came we have four tubs of butter, 4 2L bottles of milk, 4 packs of bananas etc etc. The delivery man visited a couple of times after that and took great pleasure in telling me there was “only one order this time”
