Protective gloves when shopping

What is your opinion?

Lots of people seem to be wearing them when out and about but it seems pointless to me.

I bought a box of disposable gloves while I was out shopping yesterday, only to find when I got home that I had bought small, I never thought to look on the box what size they were.
Tried one on and it took so long to ease it on I won't be wearing them, but after reading this post I feel a lot better about it. This afternoon I am going to make a holder for my sanitizer which will clip on the outside of my handbag so that I can use it at regular intervals whilst out shopping.

Gloves are totally pointless coronavirus doesn’t sink into the skin
Unless you change them every time you touch something I can see no benefit

Have bought some masks but haven’t used one yet. I’ve been wearing a scarf that I’ve pulled up whilst queueing or inside the shop.

Don’t understand why so many people leave their nose uncovered!

No.Sanitise my hands before and after shop. Then wash thoroughly on returning home. And the number discarded gloves infuriates me.

Many of the gloves are biodegradable. Be careful when buying....and what about disposable masks regarding waste! If you use gloves it only ‘spreads the virus’ within the supermarket the same as using your hands! ‘Problems’ arise if you touch them when taking off, if you leave them on(who would, if you think about it)and then go to other places....but then again that’s no different to having bare hands, not washing them and still going to other places or touching other things afterwards! Personally, I would never wear the same gloves to more than one shop. So if I was in a shopping centre, I wouldn’t just put them on for the whole shopping trip. But then again, I wouldn’t go on a shopping trip right now!?

I appreciate you can get biodegradable gloves Gingergirl but in the pandemic they will need to be incinerated.

I dont understand biodegradable dog poo bags because they are also incinerated, unless left out in the countryside of course!

Hardly any LAs put rubbish in landfill any more because there is a huge tax on it.

I wear gloves but that is because my hands became dry and flaky with all this use of sanitiser even though I creamed regularly. Much better now, thankfully, but I do, of course sanitise the gloves before I make my exceedingly brief visit to the supermarket. Happily, my face mask is extremely comfortable - still don't like it at all - so I don't think (???) I touch it.

Vintagegirl Fri 17-Jul-20 14:26:39

I used to wear one glove but now with so much sanitiser about seems pointless. I also have managed without supermarket trolley/baskets as have a basket of my own and also a couple of soft cloth bags for overflow. I 'park' basket when full in shop and then collect when ready for till. My hands complaining of sticky sanitiser from several places today but have a bottle of water and towel in car for quick rinse off. I made masks early on and have been wearing for months now, just another habit like taking your keys/glasses etc when you go out.

Rosina Fri 17-Jul-20 14:40:56

Just can't see the point of gloves - I avoid touching anything when out, and if I have to then as soon as I get home I wash my hands, rinse with disinfectant, and then disinfect anything I have touched like the keys, car door handles, ignition, window buttons and the house door handle, then another disinfectant rinse for the hands. I fear gloves make people over confident - a local shopkeeer here has the same pair that I swear he has worn since March!

Lulubelle500 Fri 17-Jul-20 14:46:36

I have the same problem as Kim 19. My right hand after three months of sanitizers and soap washing is now not a thing of beauty! Both my nurse friends and the pharmacist advise wearing gloves on weekly visit to s/market. Strip them off when getting home and dispose of them. What's the problem? Honestly, all the advice we're getting is designed to keep us safe yet some people behave as if it was an attempt to steal our birthright!

Tweedle24 Fri 17-Jul-20 14:48:56

I think it is highly unlikely for glove wearing to become compulsory as they spread the virus more than frequently cleansed hands. I use the sanitiser outside the shop on entering and leaving (if there is any). I also carry antiviral gel in my handbag to clean my hands before applying and after removing mask and after touching anything that could be contaminated.

Tweedle24 Fri 17-Jul-20 14:54:50

Lulubelle Far be it for me to disagree with your nurse and pharmacist friends but I think the saying, quoted a couple of times on here, that wearing gloves is like wearing the same condom for multiple partners is so very true. You say you take them off when you get home but, by then, you have contaminated your car (if you drove there) and your bag, keys, door knob etc.
By the way, I too was a nurse for over 40 years.

hapgran Fri 17-Jul-20 14:58:31

There was a clip on Facebook of a nurse demonstrating that gloves for shopping are not a good idea. She used blue paint to imitate the virus and by the time she had finished, it was all over the gloves, her face, her phone etc...

Callistemon Fri 17-Jul-20 15:04:58

It makes no difference if you touch things with or without gloves; if you touch a virus-contaminated surface it will be transferred as that nurse demonstrated.

Tweedle24 Fri 17-Jul-20 15:10:13

True but, if not wearing gloves, you would wash or sanitise hands

Nanniejude Fri 17-Jul-20 16:02:08

Don’t wear gloves, wash your hands or use sanitizer . Make an effort not to touch your face.
The medical profession changes their gloves between each patient and wash hands before and after.

Lulubelle500 Fri 17-Jul-20 16:14:40

Tweedle24 Think I said I was wearing gloves because constant sanitizing has caused a rash on my hand. But I still don't see the difference between washing your hands and washing your hands with a glove on them. However.....

Joesoap Fri 17-Jul-20 16:25:26

I wear them if they are provided, some shops have a box of them inside the door,I use them and dispose of them in the waste paper bin in the shop,I sanitize my hands in the car, and wash my hands on returning home,am I being hysterical or OCD?

Jayne16 Fri 17-Jul-20 16:44:56

No, don't wear them. Virus spreaders!

Eloethan Fri 17-Jul-20 16:57:00

I think unless everyone wears plastic gloves, they may actually contribute to the spread of viruses.

If you wear gloves for a prolonged period and in different environments - on public transport, in shops, etc, etc., they may protect you but they put others at more risk. You get on a bus, touching the handrail as you get on and off, you push open a door to a shop, you handle goods in a shop, you pay at the cash desk, etc, etc. Each touch represents an opportunity to contact the virus - but then, instead of cleansing your hands regularly, you go on to touch many other surfaces wearing your potentially contaminated gloves.

If you are not wearing gloves, you can use a sanitising gel or wipes at various points of contact (many shops now provide sanitising liquid at the door and in various locations round the shop). This obviously won't eliminate every possible instance of touch contamination but at least it reduces it. Gloves make wearers unconcerned about what they touch and so every potentially contaminated surface they touch is transferred to their gloves and from their gloves to other surfaces - and potentially onward to people not wearing gloves. I saw a home care assistant in our newsagent the other day - with her mask and gloves on, picking up various items and putting them down, handing over cash, etc. If she had just been to see her client, she was putting others at risk, if she had not seen her client, she was putting her client at risk.

I have felt the same about the use of gloves in a business non-virus situation, eg when handling food, making sandwiches, etc, etc.

bikergran Fri 17-Jul-20 17:52:48

Working on my checkout I have some people come through wearing all kinds of gloves.

The state of some of them leave a lot to be desired!

One of many customers came through today with grubby/filthy latex type gloves.

Putting card in machine and tapping away at the digits.

I always just say to the next customer, I am just wiping the keypad whilst you load your shopping, which they seem quite grateful of.

I myself do not believe wearing gloves helps, I personally think its spreads more germs.

Franbern Fri 17-Jul-20 18:12:34

I am so surprised as how many people seem to wash their shopping. Hear of people using wipes on their tins and other packages. I have continued going to weekly supermarket shop throughout. Have always worn a mask - out of respect for other people. Do use supermarkets sanitiser to wipe down trolley. Take mask off as soon as I leave the shop Would not dream of wearing gloves (except in winter months), as I feel that skin is far safer than plastic covering on hands.

As soon as I get home, I wash my hands, unpack shopping, put it all away - then wash my hands again. Do not sanitise the shopping. Obviously, always wash my hands prior to preparing any food.

Have got one mask with a transparent part over mouth. But usually use the disposable blue/white ones.

Greeneyedgirl Fri 17-Jul-20 18:24:59

I’m wondering about the evidence for washing/wiping shopping compared to not doing so. Some of my friends do, others don’t. None of them have had covid as far as they or I know.

I know that the virus can last for quite a while on different surfaces but I’m thinking there would be a lot more infections in people who haven’t been out and about if it was that risky.

I do wipe my shopping btw.

curlz Fri 17-Jul-20 19:16:46

People have been coming into the shop where I work today with masks on and then removing them by pulling them down when they come to my counter , what’s that all about ?‍♀️We accept cash but we have been advised not to use gloves but to wash hands or use sanitizer between customers

dizzyblonde Fri 17-Jul-20 19:29:58

Your skin is an excellently designed barrier against bacteria and viruses. No need for gloves, sanitising gloves compromises their integrity and puts the wearer more at risk.
