I was talking to my niece yesterday and she was telling me about lots of her friends hitting the shops before they are condemned to shopping in a mask.

Will you?

I can't understand why people wait for the Government to tell them how to protect themselves, then blame the Government for not acting quicker/clearer. When we know there is a dangerous virus and thousands have died, surely it is our responsibility for our personal care and our loved ones. We have been wearing masks since March too, and intend to continue for the foreseeable. I will shop on line as much as possible and click and collect food shopping, as I do not qualify for home delivery. I certainly do not intend to visit shopping centres and busy leisure spots for some time yet.

I don’t mind wearing a mask at all, if you have the metal insert they don’t slip down. If someone in a shop was displaying anti social behaviour or stealing, the shop would deal with it, why not those who won’t wear a mask?

I have a bad feeling about why craftyone says her mask will slip down over her nose, but I do hope I’m wrong.

I've been wearing a mask since I started going into shops. Why on earth not. I find when people are walking towards you and spot the mask they take a small step to one side as it reminds them to keep their distance. It works all the time in the supermarket.

EllanVannin Thu 23-Jul-20 09:17:11

Some of them look like trusses grin---following on from MawB's joke.

Ah well, it's only 7 months too late !!

Not particularly looking forward since I've managed locally minus a mask and spend most of my time indoors.

There are so many different patterns and tutorials for different types of mask. It is bewildering! I have settled on a pleated mask which uses quite a lot of material compared to others, but it seems to fit all the family and give really good coverage. Guess what I am doing all day today .........!

I don’t understand why people won’t just wear the blooming things and stop moaning about it.

How long do people spend in shops that it is going to be a problem for them?

I wear glasses and have asthma, two of the reasons people are giving for not wearing them. Its not great but if it protects me and others from the virus then it’s a no brainier.

I have tried several different types of masks and have found the one I am most comfortable with.

I am in work at 8.00 tomorrow in the Supermarket when it becomes that we/customers have to wear masks,

What I don't understand is if people on the door cannot challenge them (not that I would want that job, its been bad enough asking them to follow the one way system)

As for the £100 fine, who is going to implement it...totally confusing.

Not yet clear if staff have to wear masks as we are behind screens.

Lets see what tomorrow brings hmm

NotSpaghetti Thu 23-Jul-20 09:27:52

Best mask for glasses wearers anyone?

Calendargirl Thu 23-Jul-20 09:29:10

Apparently, you can print a form off the internet saying for various reasons you cannot wear a mask.

I think many will use this form and just not bother with a mask.

eazybee Thu 23-Jul-20 09:32:58

The use of masks is being imposed now, I feel, because there are more people about, the shops have dropped the restrictions on the numbers of customers, social distancing is shrinking, and people back at work don't have hours to stand in queues.
I do find it ironic that until a few months ago there was so much criticism of the use of cars; now it is suddenly acceptable, almost mandatory, to have everything delivered to the doorstep by several different vehicles because of a refusal to wear a mask.
If wearing a mask helps to get the economy going, so be it.

shysal Thu 23-Jul-20 09:34:40

I have been wearing a mask in the supermarket all along.

Have you seen the advice about not wearing masks with a valve?
It seems the rush of exhaled air through the valve is more of a danger to others than not wearing one.

MellowYellow Thu 23-Jul-20 09:35:44

I will wear a mask for shopping, it makes sense, but I have an essential 7 hour train journey next month and because I have a breathing problem I won't be able to wear a mask for that long, but I would hate to just go bare-faced. My daughter is blind and can't tolerate losing her sense of smell as well so she can't cope with a mask. She told me about the Sunflower organisation which, among other things, can supply a printed card on a lanyard to show to people that you're exempt. I shall wear a mask for as long as I can on the train but it will be useful to have something 'official' to show.

Barmeyoldbat Thu 23-Jul-20 09:36:05

I see no reason why anyone can't wear a mask for a short time. I wear glasses and use an inhaler but have managed right from the start way back in March. As said before, people notice your are wearing a mask and step away from you and give you more space. I even wear one when I meet family.

Pumpkinpie Thu 23-Jul-20 09:38:03

I’ve been wearing a mask for a few months now any time I have to go into a confined space ie shop , hospital, chemist.
I don’t see why the sudden protest
I also carry & use disinfectant hand gel which I use every time I go somewhere
I’m certainly not doing any non essential visits any where
It’s not rocket science just being considerate to everyone who could be at a greater health risk

Aepgirl Thu 23-Jul-20 09:39:13

I can’t see the problem of face covering. I have been wearing one in shops for several weeks now, and soon got used to it. Why are people so selfish? I listened to a surgeon on television yesterday who said ‘no surgeon has ever dropped dead because of breathing difficulties whilst wearing a mask’ .

JenniferEccles Thu 23-Jul-20 09:40:14

My understanding is that it is advisory with the assumption that the majority of us will comply.

There are so few cases of the virus in circulation now so it does seem a bit illogical compared with if the ruling had come in at the height of the pandemic, but at that stage we were all at home most of the time.

Plus of course the ‘experts’ were divided as to whether they were helpful or not !

Now most of us are out and about and trying to get back to normal, face covering might help to keep the virus in check.

I hate wearing them. I find them claustrophobic and hot but I will comply.

Teetime Thu 23-Jul-20 09:40:30

I shall wear a face covering of course but they do slip down when you speak and then you see people and me I've done it too fiddling with it to put it back up so of course you then have organism on your hands so strictly speaking you should handwash/sanitise every time you do that. Not all the experts agree about mask wearing and the conditions of when and where are confusing and conflicting. However the order has been given so mask wearing it is.

Lucca Thu 23-Jul-20 09:43:45

Oh dear I didn’t realise it was just advisory, WHY? Why is govt so scared of making a decision and enforcing it ? Vote losing ?

Cinderella Thu 23-Jul-20 09:47:44

Some people have a legitimate reason for not wearing a mask.
Otherwise, no-mask wearers advertise the fact
"I ONLY CARE ABOUT MYSELF"
Mask wearers advertise the fact -
" I DO CARE ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE"
It's plain and simple to me.
DO WE CARE ABOUT TRYING TO PREVENT A SECOND WAVE?

Grandy56 Thu 23-Jul-20 09:49:31

Maydoll I quite agree with you and have been wondering the same myself.

Thecatshatontgemat Thu 23-Jul-20 09:51:47

It really is no bother wearing a mask, unless you wear glasses, as they steam up. Just very uncomfortable.
My solution is a silk square folded into a triangle, and tying firmly behind the head.
You can half breath through the material, and half breathe out under it.
Will be donning it tomorrow, even although my fried says l look like Ned Kelly.
Charming.... ?

jaylucy Thu 23-Jul-20 09:51:54

Why was it not compulsory months ago ?

Thecatshatontgemat Thu 23-Jul-20 09:52:22

Friend, not fried......
