Thinking about it a little more; I think with such easy assess to the www and the vast amount of information that's available to us, it's so much easier now to research and investigate a subject in more depth. Opinions and beliefs that we have perhaps held onto for many years can be overturned or re evaluated when we start to look deeper and find information that challenges what we've always thought or believed in. It's much easier now to be swayed in our beliefs or consider other viewpoints because we can access so many others.
I am often conflicted and can often see both sides of an argument. If I believed in astrology I would say it is because I am a Gemini. I don't contribute to threads on religion or politics for this reason.
You’re right Lucca - I can be conflicted, or open to persuasion on things. Probably more so as I get older, I think. A very wise older colleague once told me that circumstances alter cases.
That’s good actually as a lot of people become totally inflexible as they get older!
I had very definite opinions about everything when I was younger. As I have aged, I can see room for flexibility in most things. I think being able to see all sides is a sign of empathy. I still have opinions but not perhaps as forcefully expressed!
Agreed ! but that’s not quite what I meant. It’s the thinking I absolutely know my views but maybe not being able to back them up or listening to someone else and then doubting my self.
Oh I am conflicted on most things! I would be rubbish on a jury. I could listen to completely different statements from both the accusor and the accused and completely believe both. I can so easily be swayed. But there are certain things that I have extremely strong views on: child abuse and animal welfare and cruely. I also can't bear any kind of injustice, but other than those things, I have quite an open mind.
I sometimes annoy myself Lucca when I'm conflicted which happens more often now I'm older. I used to be a straight down the line person, quite definite in my views now I see value in both sides of an argument. There are still some things I'm unequivocal about but often I find myself wavering,
I'm like you Lucca as you say partly because of lack of full knowledge of a subject or lack of understanding. Also I'm always open to listen to others' points of view and then make my mind up.

Reading the NHS or Private thread got me thinking that sometimes I am very conflicted (I think that’s the right word) in my views. I know it’s partly due to ignorance of some topics or lack of understanding of others. A lot of GN contributors seem very certain indeed. Are you ? Are you right to be so certain ? Or does that smack of inflexibility?
