I’ve just noticed there are three programmes coming on next wed thurs, and fri, about Diana, on channel 5, as I was a great fan I will be tuning in, but have to say I will mute the interview with Paul Burrell having his say! Will anyone else be watching it?

Am not interested in watching old footage of Diana, she wasn’t the right woman for PC and should have been warned off by somebody in the know, before things became serious.
She was like everybody else, had her faults and weaknesses but also had her good points too.

I did watch ( a little) last night about Harry and Meghan.
I thought most of her outfits were lovely ( not her) and very stylish, spoilt only by her being much too thin, legs like little sticks and wearing five inch heels all the time.I mused that she must be tiny as even in the heels she is so short standing next to Harry.I hadn’t noticed that fact until now, or how tall
Kate appears stood next to her ( mind you, she wears five inch heels too, it seems to be obligatory.)

I agree. She was flawed like we all are. She was 19 when she was selected to marry Prince C. Disaster for both of them. The decision to have those young boys walk behind the coffin was I'm sure taken with great care. Sadly, it was absolutely the wrong thing for the boys . I suspect many of us watched the footage and cringed/wept for them. To lose your mother in such a public and tragic manner, then to put on your suit and walk behind the coffin, knowing the world is watching and that somehow, you have to get through this looking calm and dignified. Pressure or what

That’s how I felt too at the time.It was so obviously a wrong choice to make them do it, they must have steeled themselves not to cry.....what children should have to do that?

It was heartbreaking.

I have a photo of my DD outside her Halls of Residence when she went to university, age 19, looking so young and vulnerable. She'd already had a year working and travelling, but she seemed so young.

Diana had no idea what lay ahead.

Yes, I think you're right.

MissAdventure Fri 14-Aug-20 19:07:53

That was exactly her appeal, I think.

Namsnanny Fri 14-Aug-20 17:20:48

I think the schedules are looking for ways to fill the tv cheaply. Edit some old footage, add a few words from a self important nobody, job done.
And what better excuse than the anniversary of her death?

We humans are suckers for youth and beauty, hence the adoration.
It's the same with M Monroe.

Add in the reality that she was badly treated in her marriage ( I'm thinking of how shocking it would have been to find the cufflinks on her honeymoon).

To be honest I hated all the weeping and wailing by the public at her funeral.
Couldn't people have been more considerate of those two young boys having to go through that?
It felt disingenuous, and self centred to wallow whilst others with a real attachment had to bear the pain stoically.
I'm not saying I too wasnt shocked enough to shed a tear, butat least I was out of W and H earshot.

She wasn't anywhere near a saint, just a flawed human being, likenthe rest of us.

MissAdventure Fri 14-Aug-20 14:46:24

The same for me, really.
She was an interesting character.

Eloethan Fri 14-Aug-20 14:41:01

I liked Diana (as much as you can like anyone you have never met) and was very sorry when she died.

MawB Fri 14-Aug-20 14:26:12

All seems a bit ghoulish to me - I’m thinking Paul Burrell must have needed his coffers topping up. The reviews have been pretty dire.

Anniebach Fri 14-Aug-20 12:51:39

Katherine Kent reached out physically and emotionally long
before Diana

silverlining48 Fri 14-Aug-20 12:51:00

Don’t know how we missed you MissA smile

Anniebach Fri 14-Aug-20 12:49:53

Why should Charles and Camilla feel guilt ?

MissAdventure Fri 14-Aug-20 12:43:21

I went to see the flowers, the day after the funeral.

silverlining48 Fri 14-Aug-20 12:41:02

London was an unbelievable mass of flowers, they were everywhere, it was astonishing, but very sad too. She was only 36 I think and much loved by many. I always think of her sons and family who have to constantly relive the horror of events that August, and wonder too whether Charles and Camilla feel guilt. She was so young and hopeful when she married.
Diana has certainly had a lasting effect on the RF, especially the younger generation. She was the first to reach out physically and emotionally to people less fortunate, which is not something the royals had ever done before.

Jane43 Fri 14-Aug-20 12:17:17

The thing that struck me most was the amount of flowers that people left, why didn’t they donate the money they paid for them to one of the charities she supported?

silverlining48 Fri 14-Aug-20 10:50:36

Didn’t plan to watch but I did, and though most of it wasn’t new I still found it quite interesting and rather sad.

When that happens, it makes you wonder if we GN’ers are really scraping the barrel for things to chat about.
?

Anniebach Thu 13-Aug-20 10:02:25

The newspapers that week, ‘your country needs you ma’am’
and interviews with the crowds at Buck House, ‘the Queen
should be here’ , why ?

Franbern Thu 13-Aug-20 09:45:20

My main memories of the day of her death was on my way out that Sunday morning going in, as usual, to purchase The Observor'. and outside, a man saying to me 'Isn't it dreadful?' - 'What?' I asked, he looked at me as if I was a visitor from the Moon 'Diane's death' he said - 'Who?' I asked. 'Diane, the Princess', he explained. 'I do not know anyone called Diane', I told him, then did relent a little, 'The person you refer to- I think of her as often as she thinks of me'.
I then continued my way to attend the second day of a 2-day training course. Always so difficult to find whole weekends free enough to fit these in. Was not impressed when I arrived to hear the trainer suggesting that, 'Out of respect', we postpone that second day. After a few short words from me, the rest of the candidates vetoed that suggestion.
On the following Saturday - funeral day, I kept open the Children's gymnastic club which ran for ages 3 yrs - 15 yrs old. Only had one parent complained that we were open, and I did point out they had the option not to come that day. On the other hand had several parents thank me for keeping some sort of normality for their young children who had found that week morbid and very frightening. TV in Reception area was kept to Channel 4 which, thankfully, was the only channel running normal childrens programmes and nor pictures of that funeral.

Ellianne Thu 13-Aug-20 09:17:37

There was some previously unseen footage of her at The Ritz and quite a lot about Mohammed Al Fayed's involvement in the tragic decision making.
It left me thinking what if things had been different, where would she be now?

Lucca Thu 13-Aug-20 09:11:53

No intention of watching it. I thought she was a stylish beautiful woman but the Dianamania was silly. However she may have behaved she was a mother who died tragically young leaving two young sons so I feel the anatagonistic (? Highly critical ?)comments after all this time are not necessary Or appropriate. But that’s just my opinion.

Same old, same old. I quite liked the format with the black and white countdown reel.
The shots they chose showed how really manipulative she was both in front of the camera and in winning people over. It wasn't all gushing about her, just bare facts.
I believe it is being shown to coincide with the anniversary of her death.
Not sure whether I'll watch the rest.

Calendargirl Thu 13-Aug-20 06:54:58

Well, I watched it TrendyNannie.

There wasn’t much else on, yes it was the same old stuff, interesting how young Tony Blair, Alastair Campbell et al looked back then.
