Yesterday there was a thread about dogs barking, and I thought how much I would hate to live near someone whose dog barks excessively.

I think it could make me ill, seriously.

My mum didn't like the sound of washing billowing on the line when it was really windy.

Are there sounds that you love or hate?

My girl said a happy childhood memory for her was the sound of the grill pan sliding out for my toast, once she was tucked up in bed.

Iam64,i hope the gun dog near you is not actually used for hunting but it must-
be very lonely being left all day.

I love the sound of children's laughter and the chimes of the ice cream van. Like others on here, wind chimes and a ticking clock drive me crazy!

ChrisK Wed 12-Aug-20 16:48:28

When one is retired the very loud noise of very building work undertaken by professionals in their relatives homes at weekends, week after week after week, with no thought for people trying to relax in their gardens it drives me crazy and even when its finished the bar/hot tub will attract family and friends for miles around! Help

I used to like the sound of a cuckoo in spring at
first, but as time went on and they were endlessly repeating the same two notes it began to drive me mad. It’s many, many years since I heard one, sadly.

I scream inside when I hear noisy eaters.
Snoring gets on my nerves
Can't abide the sound of wind chimes.

I love the sound of a ticking clock.
Rain and wind when I'm in bed.
I used to love hearing the sound of a cuckoo but I haven't heard one for years yet we live in the countryside.
I would love to hear the sound of " I've done the hoovering" or "I've done ironing" but it doesn't happen in our house.

I do find certain sounds annoying but I tell myself that a deaf person would be only too happy to hear them.

Bluecat Wed 12-Aug-20 15:43:05

Can't bear to hear children crying - presumably no-one likes it but it makes me feel agitated and distressed, even when it's nothing to do with me.

On a lesser scale, I hate to hear cutlery scraping on a plate. I know it happens accidentally but it sets my teeth on edge. Car alarms are pretty awful too.

Chewbacca ? impossible to sleep through some storms, but at least your garden had some rain.

A house near us had wind chimes by their front door and one breezy night someone came along with a pair os scissors an cut them down! It wasn't me, honest! smile

Of course it was you ?how did you know that scissors had been used and not a knife?

I have a serious grudge with the roller mower the neighbour uses! What a bloody awful sound!!
Kids screaming for no reason and the neighbour who leaves her poor dog to bark all day.
I wish I could afford to live on an island ??
We had an amazing thunder storm last night. Thats a sound I love to hear. It lulled me to sleep.
Im another one who likes to hear the sea, so maybe an island is the best place for me ??‍♀️

Without a doubt, the worst noises for me are garden machinery and other people’s ‘music’. So many sunny afternoons are spoilt by noisy mowers, strimmers and hedge cutters. As for loud music audible to all neighbours - what bad manners is that? Come to think of it, these are both summer problems. I think winter is better.

Paperback. I think you must live nextdoor but one to me grin

I have extremely sensitive hearing so noise is a big issue for me.
I hate traffic noise - it will definitely be a deal-breaker if I ever buy a holiday home!

I like windchimes - but not my neighbours, at night when its windy they drive me mad when i'm trying to sleep. I have even got up in the dead of night and tied them up!

My next door neighbours TV, she is very deaf so its LOUD -especially early morning or in the dead of night!

Barking dogs - there are rather a lot around where i live, it can be like living next door to kennels when i sit in my garden.

I love to hear children playing - but not when they start shrieking (usually little girls), it really hurts my ears.

I love hearing the birds singing but loathe the harsh noise magpies make. Cooing, flapping pigeons annoy me too.

I love the sound of rain battering the windows (or a tin roof).

I love music and hearing people singing.

Childrens laughter is my most favourite sound.

Next door has a leaf blower. He likes to use it most afternoons at about 4 pm. Drives me absolutely nuts. It's not a large garden and he could do the job with a rake and a broom. He only has one tree that sheds a few leaves but he likes everything so TIDY. Aaaagh!

SusieFlo Wed 12-Aug-20 14:27:14

Snoring!!

Lulubelle500 Wed 12-Aug-20 14:17:53

There are a lot of kids in my street. I love the sound of them laughing when I'm still in bed in the morning.

hulahoop Wed 12-Aug-20 14:11:55

I must have misophonia too petunia. My favourite sounds are children giggling .

Froglady Wed 12-Aug-20 13:55:24

I've considered buying headphones because of a barking dog. It barks when it's in the garden on it's own and it barks when someone is in the garden with it and it very rarely gets told to stop barking - drives me up the wall when I'm trying to read.

Chewbacca Wed 12-Aug-20 13:55:23

Noise? You've no idea about noise! At about midnight last night we had a huge thunderstorm; sheet lightening, fork lightening, rolling thunder, huge bangs of thunder, torrential rain and howling wind. It went in for over 2 hours. Every damned car alarm on the road was going off. And then the fire engines sirens came in because 2 houses had been struck by lightening. I'm wrecked today!

Thumping great Mathews lorries full of rubble and top soil constantly thundering past my house servicing the housing developments in the area. As soon as one development finishes another starts up and the crashing and banging of these enormous lorries goes on and on throughout the day 5 or 6 times and hour.

Beauregard Wed 12-Aug-20 13:43:14

I agree Polly4t42. Sunday afternoons should be quiet time, free of the sound of mowers and other noisy tools.

mrsgreenfingers56 Wed 12-Aug-20 13:31:15

I love to hear a baby/child chuckling as our new DGD does. It's so sweet. Totally and utterly hate dogs barking, why do their owners allow it? Don't mind wind chimes at all.

MissAdventure Wed 12-Aug-20 13:27:01

A yapper .
Probably there are tappers that get on people's nerves, too.

MissAdventure Wed 12-Aug-20 13:25:47

There is a tapper in one direction, and a monotone and continuous bark, bark, bark, bark, barker in the other.

Thankfully they're far enough away, and I'm deaf enough to rarely pick up on the sound.
I'm always astonished that people can actually live with that in their home.
