Yesterday there was a thread about dogs barking, and I thought how much I would hate to live near someone whose dog barks excessively.

I think it could make me ill, seriously.

My mum didn't like the sound of washing billowing on the line when it was really windy.

Are there sounds that you love or hate?

My girl said a happy childhood memory for her was the sound of the grill pan sliding out for my toast, once she was tucked up in bed.

There is a dog two doors down from us that never stops yapping. We have to close all the windows ( in this heat) to get away from it.

I am listening to next door’s dog barking right now, it makes a lot of noise for a small dog. Gregorian chant gives me the creeps. I like the sound of the waves on pebbles and thunder!

Other people’s music in a public space; never my choice! Neighbours had workmen yesterday whose music blared from their van parked on my property (grrrgh) only they were nowhere near it!
Neighbour’s leaf blower drives me nuts. He and it are joined at the hip.
Inane, unnecessary chatter in a theatre or cinema.
Constantly banging doors
The grinding & metallic thumping at a nearby quarry when the wind is from the west

I think that’s it grin

Ooh! I used to like the crackles on my favourite records, just before the start of the song.

Likes..... waves crashing. Ice cream man. Birds singing early morning.
Church bells ringing.

Hates.... dogs continually barking. Babies crying ( poor things).
Roar of lorries on motorways.
Ambulance sirens.

dogs barking are my bug bear, and when one starts all the others follow ,,,,why ??

Fascinating article on misophonia in the T'graph, it is actually a condition to be supersensitive to particular noises. For me I cannot bear DH's frequent coughing, or his eating noises. Have to confess I don't like rap music either!

Wind chimes are fine, and the trickle of water is soothing. Was worried that our fountain would disturb the neighbours, but they said they loved it!

Family leaving after Sunday lunch, dishwasher loaded, glasses washed and just sitting outside with a coffee or cold drink when the lawn mowers start up shattering our peace and jangling our nerves. I realise people have to mow their lawns during the weekends but why leave it til 2-3 pm.

fifeywifey Wed 12-Aug-20 12:36:04

I love the sound of a grate being raked as it was what I woke up to every morning as a child. No cosy central heating, just a coal fire in the lounge as the only source of heat.

Tweedle24 Wed 12-Aug-20 12:34:37

I love the kites whistling too, lemongrove, and gulls and owls. I hate the boom boom of overly loud car radios’ bass, especially in a car next to me at the lights.

TrendyNannie6 Wed 12-Aug-20 12:31:08

Love the sound of waterfalls. Waves hitting rocks, birdsong, don’t like the sound of my alarm clock lol

petunia Wed 12-Aug-20 12:30:38

I hate hate HATE the sound of people eating. The slurping, sucking, crunching, chewing and swallowing causes me to cringe and fizz with rage. Both DH and I thought I was being unreasonable and should pull myself together. People eat-get over it

then I did one of these genetic tests that tell you all manner of things. Apparently I am genetically programmed to dislike the sound of eating. Its a real thing. Its called misophonia. I am absolved!

Lying in bed listening to the sound of rain on the tin roof is so very relaxing. I love the sound of thunder. Only thing I don’t like is when forks scrape on plates

Newatthis Wed 12-Aug-20 12:27:51

Dogs barking - I felt for the poor lady yesterday with all those dogs barking, it must be awful. Also a crying baby. I know that some people think that you should leave baby to cry but I think that if a baby cries then it needs something. I love hearing the birdsong in the morning and in the evening and I love hearing the rustle of the wind on the trees. We had lightning last night for 25 minutes constant with thunder in the background. Although a little scary it also had its own beauty about it.

Growing0ldDisgracefully Wed 12-Aug-20 12:26:41

Thought of a few more - hate sniffing, chomping noises while eating, people cracking their finger joints, the drone of serial complainers.

Sorry to a couple of posters but I adore the rumbling, burbling sound of my motorbike, and then the gentle 'plink plink' sounds she makes cooling down.

I love the sound of happy children playing, especially the ones that call me Grandma. I love the dawn chorus in the spring when, for about half an hour, the air is filled with birdsong. I love the summer sound of China tea cups chinking when we have a cuppa outside in the shade of our oak tree. I even like the pigeons cooing in the summer, for me that's a summer sound. I love listening to the rain bouncing off our boat's steel roof when I'm snug and dry inside. I even like the sound of windchimes ?

I hate the sound of my DH snoring!

lemongrove Wed 12-Aug-20 12:21:58

MissAdventure

I'm really intrigued by the windchimes, still.

Can anyone say why it is that they dislike them?

Is it the totally random, unordered sound they make?

Like this? Chime, chiiiiiime, clang ,bong, chiiime, clang, bong,
Tinkle, chime, clang, tiiiiinkle, bong ??

MissAdventure Wed 12-Aug-20 12:19:49

Oh yes, I know what you mean about the one show.

gillyknits Wed 12-Aug-20 12:18:16

Love to hear my cat purr when he’s eating! ?
Hate the last note in the “One Show” title music and anything that reaches a similar note,?

MissAdventure Wed 12-Aug-20 12:17:56

I really dislike modern jazz.
My brain struggles to find some sort of order in what sounds like chaos to my ears.

Growing0ldDisgracefully Wed 12-Aug-20 12:16:22

Love windchimes, Birdsong, the trees rustling in the wind, water trickling in rivers, waterfalls etc.

Absolutely hate the sound of footballs being bounced (especially against walks), kids shrieking for the sake of it, rap music.

Grandyma Wed 12-Aug-20 12:11:10

Love: the sounds of the waves on the beach, moving, running water, babies & children laughing, rain on the roof of caravan/conservatory, birdsong, silence, dh putting the kettle on.
Hate: screaming, screeching children (mine were never allowed to, ticking or chiming clocks, building works, chalk on a blackboard, scraping plates, yapping dogs, screeching of car tyres, dripping tap, whistling, my grandchildren saying goodbye.

Kiwigramz Wed 12-Aug-20 12:10:59

Yes, I know I must be mad, but my favourite sound is from about 3 am onwards, the cockerells crowing in the morning. I go straight back to sleep. This usually happens a few times, but I have always been a country girl at heart.

MissAdventure Wed 12-Aug-20 12:10:48

I have done before, and apart from suggesting to the owner that he clean up the tiny yard (about 5ft square of concrete with high walls all around) where his dog was chained, said they couldn't do any more.
The dog had shelter, and access to food and water.

Jaye53 Wed 12-Aug-20 12:05:05

if I hear a dog barking ALL DAY I would report to Rspca for cruel neglect.
