Hi all,
It is an invasion of privacy, I feel so I will be leaving. I will remember you all fondly. Xx

EDIT by GNHQ: Please see more info on the new consent form here

NfkDumpling Fri 14-Aug-20 20:32:37

If you click everything to grey and then hit Submit, it takes you straight out. Go back in and the Legitimate Interest button is straight back to blue again.

It seems that Legitimate Interest is permanent and cannot be switched off.

Elegran Fri 14-Aug-20 20:44:39

If your browser is set to clear all cookies when it is switched off, then among them it will clear the cookies that mark you as not wanting to consent to the things that you thought you had clearly indicated. Not all cookies are sinister invasions. Many of them are records of the choices you ticked on sites like Gransnet that you visit. Changing that setting, and selecting Gransnet cookies to keep will preserve your choices. It will be under something like "exceptions"

Thankyou Elegran

LaraGransnet was too tired to go through the form, I too would like another chance.

Thank you.

annep1 Fri 14-Aug-20 22:24:57

I need to do it again. I just consented without looking.

Callistemon Fri 14-Aug-20 22:53:28

I did that Elegran but have just checked again and the consents have reverted yet again.

I don't like this.

Marydoll Fri 14-Aug-20 23:00:46

The same thing has happened to me on two different devices.
The Legitimate interest icons have reverted back to blue, twice.
I would like a Clear explanation of what constitutes a legitimate interest.

Callistemon Fri 14-Aug-20 23:11:04

I am fast losing any legitimate interest in Gransnet, Marydoll!

Marydoll Fri 14-Aug-20 23:18:31

I long for the old days, when we had sensible and interesting discussions. They are few and far between nowadays.

Before anyone takes offense, I'm just as responsible for concentributing to some of the lighter and somewhat inane threads. blush

Callistemon Fri 14-Aug-20 23:21:47

Perhaps a bit if inanity is needed at the moment.
After all, we're all sick of banana cake.

Puzzler61 Sat 15-Aug-20 06:04:09

That’s unfair to banana cake Callistemon. A good one is a very tasty treat ( IMO ) ?

Puzzler61 Sat 15-Aug-20 06:16:13

I just checked and my ‘Legitimate Interests’ have all been reverted to blue (Yes) status.
When I change them to grey and press “Submit” at the end of the list,
It feels as if nothing really happens, certainly no message to say “your options have been saved”.

I don’t like it either.

When I read that certain posters had decided to leave GN, I thought ‘good!’

I realise, of course, no one would want that to be me!

?

I never promised to do that, however.

Grandad1943 Sat 15-Aug-20 08:34:44

GN gets its revenue entirely from advertising. By consenting to all, that allows advertisers to target your particular interests and therefore more of them are attracted to GN increasing its revenue base.

If forum members wish to see GN survive then consenting to all will help greatly. It has to be remembered that competition against GN is Twitter and Facebook who are the ever growing giants of social media these days crushing all others in its wake.

GN has a small, older, largely single-gender base and it is obviously now becoming a struggle to survive I feel. So, do forum members wish to help it in that survival or not.

That has to be the decision for each to take with the consent form.

Spangler Sat 15-Aug-20 08:50:15

Why all the consternation over Gransnet harvesting your data? When I spoke about this previously, I was told, not by everybody, but quite a few: "I'm not that bothered by the trivia that they can collect about me."

Scroll down to my entry.

Grandad1943 Sat 15-Aug-20 08:59:46

You are quite right Spangler. Every time anyone buys any item in a shop or online by debit or credit card that transaction and all its details are recorded for future use.

Therefore what is so different in regard to GN requesting consent for those same details. If it helps GN survive so be it.

I am onboard.

If forum members wish to see GN survive then consenting to all will help greatly

And the operative word here is consent. 4 times, over 2 days, I've clicked to opt out of "Legitimate Interests" only to have them reverted back. If this isnt really a choice, then GNHQ should just come out and say so. That way we can all make an informed decision as to whether we wish to continue or not. But this not a choice so far.

In the above, you are then left with one of two options Chewbacca. You can either help GN survive into the future or take the option that this thread title and others have stated they will take.

Chewbacca Sat 15-Aug-20 09:57:16

Yes Grandad I'm aware of that! My argument (if that's what it is) is that this has been presented to us as something that can be opted in, or out. In reality, it appears that you cannot opt out and so offering it as a choice was disingenuous.

Callistemon Sat 15-Aug-20 10:06:21

Grandad
I would have thought that consenting or not consenting to your privacy preferences would be a one-off process, once done and registered it would stay the same and that each time you log in those preferences would remain, as happens on some other sites.

It seems that the personal preferences revert back each time you log off. There is a whole list of firms which needs to be gone through every time which takes some minutes.

Yes, it seems it's a case of either accept this intrusion or leave GN. Should it be like that?
Or should personal preferences remain? It's very sneaky.

Puzzler61 Sat 15-Aug-20 10:07:25

A “fait accomplis” ☹️

Bobbysgirl19 Sat 15-Aug-20 10:13:13

Many sites can only survive from advertising revenue. I suppose the alternative maybe to charge a membership subscription, so it’s a tricky one!

Grandad1943 Sat 15-Aug-20 10:16:31

It's about GN turning a profit for its owners and in that surviving.

Nothing is worse for the owner of a business than finding that you have worked very long hours overcoming all manner of problems but then find that you and that business have made no profit out of all that effort.

Simple as that.

NfkDumpling Sat 15-Aug-20 10:33:57

I'd just like to know what the "Legitimate Interest" is?

I usually just agree to everything as my memory is too bad to have secrets, but now I want to know!
