My dd says it's torrential over her house & she's half an hour drive from me. I can hear the approaching thunder... I'm settling in for a good view a the window.. Anyone else?

Nothing like a good storm is there? We haven’t got anything here yet, and the sky is clearing, so maybe missed it.

We had one that lasted ages the other night it was spectacular. While was enjoying it I remembered that my Mum used to hide in the cupboard under the stairs ??

Love it! Only a few weak rumbles here in Norfolk, but we have rain! Proper rain!

Juliet27 Sun 16-Aug-20 20:45:15

Rumbles on and off in the last few days either side of us in the SE and even some flooding. Had rain but no storm. I guess we should be grateful but I've been looking forward to a storm.

Some of you might enjoy this; it was flagged up on twitter last week. A 'real time' lightning map!

www.lightningmaps.org/#m=oss;t=3;s=0;o=0;b=;ts=0;z=7;y=53.3473;x=-0.2472;d=2;dl=2;dc=0;

We've had nothing, no significant rain and no thunderstorms, even though they were forecast all last week. It's been a bit chilly, though..

I love a good storm! In my early teens we lived on the top floor of a mansion block right on the sea front. The storms were amazing to watch.

The best ever was when we stayed in a villa on the side of a hill on Ithaki. The storm got trapped between two islands and the noise was deafening. I loved it.

In Florida the lifeguard made us leave the beach during a storm as he said people died quite often having been struck with lightening.

I am sending any thunder away from my area tonight, my dog was petrified the other night it got so loud, so thunder do not come to the south east where I am.

We've got a weird sky forming over the Mersey again which signals a volley of something in the offing. I hope the sea draws it across because there's no wind to take it.

Lots of heavy downpours on Anglesey this month, mainly at night, but only one thunderstorm a few weeks ago. I do love them, we used to live on the edge of a cliff looking across the Irish Sea, so exciting watching the lightning fork down to the sea lighting up the whole sky.
Hard on the dogs though, we used to put music on and then snuggle in to them while holding our hands tight over their ears at each thunderclap, helped a bit. Sadly no dogs at the moment.
Hope it misses you 3nanny6
Must be with you by now Mary, enjoy.

MaryTheBookeeper jealous! Love them and seems my daughter and GC’s are the same...enjoy!,

I think it has been and gone and was spectacular but short-lived.

There was a tornado/waterspout over the Bristol Channel near Portishead earlier this evening.

A clap of thunder rattled the letterbox the other day. Nearly jumped out of my skin. I love a good thunderstorm.

Fantastic light show in the week from constant lightning, enjoyed watching it. Today young relation in Norfolk is flooded from surface water so no, not keen on storms with torrential rain.

CraftyGranny Mon 17-Aug-20 12:00:32

Apparently, I slept through them, 2 nights on the trot! I love a good storm too grin

Before a storm there seems to be a sort of tension in the air and when it actually hits all that tension disappears. Our collie could sense this in advance and went to hide in the downstairs toilet, before we humans had any idea.
Sorry to keep harking back to france, but we had many spectacular storms there. many with gigantic hailstones (they still do, even more).
Once I was out walking when a storm suddenly started and I was hit on the head by one of those hailstones. They do a lot of damage, to houses trees crops etc.
Here on Tyneside it's very warm and 'close' but no storm yet.

This morning at 11 the sky went black, rolling in from the west, thunder claps galore but no visible lightening, the heavens opened, I shivered with anticipation, the cats fled to safety, and ten seconds later, it stopped.

BlueBelle Mon 17-Aug-20 13:33:32

We were promised a thunderstorm yesterday but only a small drizzle and a few distant rumbles arrived
Woken up this morning to another beautiful hot sunny day My garden bucket has about an eight of an inch water in it

Dinahmo Mon 17-Aug-20 15:45:06

Fennel Don't apologise. We had at least 3 nights of thunder and lightning but no rain last week. We then had torrential rain and hailstones, although not like the storms several years ago. Lots of rain - filled up the water butt, raised the level of the pond a bit and has prevented our shrubs from imminent death.

My landline has been completely dead since our big thunderstorm last week.

I finally got through to Sky today, they are not easy to contact. A nice young man in Northern Ireland has arranged an engineer.

First time a thunderstorm has had that effect on my phone!

I love storms - they are exhilarating. One bonfire night I happened to be in a field of ploughed earth, standing by an enormous bonfire, when a storm began. The earth smelled wonderful, the fire blazed, the rain slashed down, there was thunder, lightning, and it felt as if someone had switched the universe on. It was absolutely stunning for the senses, and I stood there getting soaked and enjoying every second.

lemongrove Mon 17-Aug-20 18:13:34

Still no real storm here, a bit of weak thunder, but plenty of lovely rain for the garden, not lasting long but quite heavy rain.
It made us able to see something odd from our window....lots of what appeared to be wasps rising in a cloud and buzzing frantically to get out of the wet.....unfortunately they turned out to be hornets ( thought they were big wasps!) and they were entering by two holes that they had either made, or were there and we hadn’t noticed, in our eaves, and going into the loft.DH bravely went into the loft, but came down very quickly, they were everywhere.Called the pest control people who will be out here tomorrow.Another expense!

annodomini Mon 17-Aug-20 18:38:52

A short, sharp storm here this morning - thunder and lightning together, and the roads were inches deep. However, it didn't take long to dry up and it's been a fine, sunny afternoon.

cornergran Mon 17-Aug-20 23:04:28

Storm here late morning. Needed the lights on for about an hour it was so dark. Forgot a bedroom window was open so spent a while mopping up. Some sun early evening. Not the best of days here although the storms do seem very localised.
