7 years after moving back to Orkney following an absence of almost 20 years, I discovered that the house we had bought had been rented by the the mother of the first Orcadian I ever made friends with at school when I was 14. My first boyfriend whom I met the same year was Orcadian as is my husband with whom I moved to Orkney the first time in 1974. This is our third attempt to live here permanently. We're hoping to stay this time. I really feel I'm meant to be here.

Dh and I went to a show in London. We had to move seats and who was sitting in front of us but my DB and his wife. Neither of us knew we were going.

When I was un Sydney Bigred18 there was a huge cruise ship blocking the my view of the opera house and many peope with Liverpool accents were enjoying the harbourside! ??

A few years ago I was on a yacht on Sydney Harbour, 20 people on board. It turned out that 3 of we ladies were all born in the same hospital in England. One was not happy that I recognised a bit of a Liverpool accent, she didnt realise she had one!

When I was 17, I wrote a fictitious story about a huge earthquake that was going to happen in autumn in the province of Avellino (Italy). In the story I imagined people running for their lives and leaving on trains. In November 23rd, 1980 a very intense earthquake hit in the exact area
that was in my story. My teacher couldn’t believe it. There were many casualties, between 2,483–4,900 dead, 7,700–8,934 injured, and 250,000 displaced.

It proves that we're all interwoven, wherever we are

But they often turn out to be one or two.

When my mother in law died, husband and I had just been to register her death and were driving home in the car, talking about music for her funeral. We had chosen a couple of tunes, but were totally stuck on choosing the last one. All of a sudden one came on the radio which she used to love. My daughter had been in a children's rock choir when she was younger. They used to sing "Words" by the Bee Gees, and my MIL always had a tear in her eye when she saw them sing it in concert. We had totally forgotten about this tune, and we just looked at one another in complete astonishment. It was as if she was reminding us.

I still like them though.
It proves that we're all interwoven, wherever we are.

Coincidences are just that- coincidences. How many times have you been on holiday and don’t meet someone from the same town? How many times do you think of someone and they don’t ring you immediately? You wouldn’t remember- you only remember the unusual times when these things happen.

My son lived in Somerset and decided to have a BBQ to celebrate his 30th birthday.

At the BBQ we got chatting to one of his friends who was a pilot on attachment from the New Zealand Navy.
His surname was the same as that of one of my uncles.

In the conversation he mentioned that before he left NZ he had been contacted on FB by some random person asking if he had any relations in the North West of the UK - he didn't.

That turned out to be my Mother who had been researching our family tree!

I just remembered another one. This was back in the 80s. My Dad had complex health issues and was under various hospitals. One day he rode his motorbike a long journey and felt ill. He got to the side of the road and passed out on the grass verge. He awoke to people asking how he was and when he answered a man said “I recognise that voice! Take your helmet off “ He did and learned he’d passed out outside his specialist’s house, and the doctor happened to have the day off! Dad obviously had no idea where his doctor lived

Many years ago I met a small group of postgraduate students in Cambridge and got talking to a young Englishman. A few months later I met the same young man at a conference in Finland. This was not so much of a coincidence as we had the same professional interest. We did not keep in touch. However it was quite strange that, two months later, we suddenly bumped into each other in Sauchiehall Street when I had gone to Glasgow to meet some old school friends. I haven't seen him since.

We watched the movie and it was brilliant

last year my OH and I went to Barbados to celebrate our 40th anniversary.

On our last night at the bar I heard a familiar accent and so struck up a conversation with a couple that we had never met before.

It turned out that the man had been brought up in the same area as me and his Dad lives in the same road as we do. We know his Dad very well and often 'pass the time of day' with him.
They were also celebrating their 40th anniversary - on the same day as ours!

My first date with my husband of 52 years was to the pictures but not at the cinema in our local town. It wasn’t until years later that we found out he had actually been born in a taxi in that cinema’s car park.

Had a lovely fun/date time for three weeks with a guy in a big city. We were both on embarkation leave. He Germany, me Malta. Parted amicably but totally. Seven years later, I was in a street with my Mum when I saw a this guy on the opposite side wrapped round a girl. We both turned round with an 'I recognise you from somewhere' attitude then continued on our way. We married a year later.

The film is brilliant

Friends of ours came for dinner one evening and as they walked through the door I had this sort of flashback and I told them I'd had a dream they were going to move house. They laughed and asked where they were going then and I told them it was "back to where they came from". A few weeks later, they called us and asked if I was a witch as followng a change at work, they were indeed moving back to the area the came from and they actually found a house only 1 road away from where they lived before! Spooky!!

When I had my first child, we had already decided what we were going to call her. The day after she was born, while I was still in hospital, my husband woke up in the morning at home and put on the radio. The song that was playing was "Louise" by Phil Everley. Guess what name we had decided on!!!

A family I know decided to emigrate en masse to New Zealand. 2grandparents., 3 adult children + partners and 5 grandchildren.
The oldest GC, who was 14, hated the idea and didn’t want to leave her friends. She was in a chat room one day, talking to a girl who came on. It turned out that she was the same age, lived in the small N.Z town that they were emigrating to, and went to the school that the GD had been enrolled in. After that amazingly co-incidental meeting GD really looked forward to emigrating, and Grandma put it down to Divine Intervention.

Last week I was driving to place flowers on my Dads grave. My DH mentioned something about birds and I said the rhyme about robins appear when loved ones are near. As we approached the grave ...yes...you have guessed...a robin was on the stone and did not move as we came close. I was overwhelmed.

We spent a couple of years living in Adelaide. About 6 weeks after we arrived we found a nice house to live in and went to an Italian restaurant round the corner to celebrate. The waitress had a Scots accent and I asked her where she was from. Turns out she had emigrated to Adelaide about 6 weeks earlier and had lived in the same town as us in Scotland before that. Then it transpired that we had lived in the same street and that her house had been about 100m from ours!
(BTW cupcake1, we visited Noosa Heads and loved it )

In 1980's my son was on a gap year in Malaysia, and with friends went to some hippy area where they met a young girl who was in need of money. The boys helped her out.
2yrs later my son was in Cuba and got talking to a roadside seller who invited him home for a meal. When son got to the house he found that the wife was the girl to whom he had given money in Malaysia.

And one from yesterday! My DH was channel hopping yesterday, waiting for the cricket to come back on TV. He very quickly came across one of those "emergency services documentaries". "Oh" he said "I was once filmed by one of those TV crews years ago". (He's retired from the fire service). "Hold on" he exclaimed "that's me"! There he was on the TV screen, in charge of a rescue. He never watches TV documentaries like that but happened to come across the one he featured in about 15 years ago.
