Were you thinking of reporting "your friend" before even checking to see if what she said ids correct ?
If I were you zi would make an appointment to have my hair done and if you get there and find out that she is not acting in accordance with the rules I would tell her that sadly you will not be returning to the salon.
As for reporting her.
I wouldn't do so but I would tell her that if she carries on ignoring the rules Someone sooner or later will report her.

This hairdresser has done your hair to your satisfaction for forty years, and has been your friend for twenty; another friend tells you she isn't taking proper precautions so on her say-so you decide to leave, and are considering reporting her.

Check the facts for yourself first; ask her to ensure protective clothing is worn to your satisfaction; if she refuses, THEN you leave, and report her if you feel it necessary.

Given that the salon could be closed down for breaking regulations and if any client tested positive (and would have to none them as contacts) it would be shut for 2 weeks, a friendly heads up has to be called for.

In my area the rate of infection is something like 3 in every one hundred thousand people.
The efficiacy of masks is not entirely proven.
Surely, if anyone had any symptoms of anything like the virus they would be continuing to go to work in a shop/salon.
Do sometimes feel that we are living an unreal world where we all want some sort of magic potion or talisman to carry to 'protect us'. Masks have become that.

Some of you are clearly idiots if you honestly think that that hairdresser wearing PPE just for your appointment is acceptable, just because she’s a friend. Are you also not observing social distancing when you meet up with others, because they’re your friends too??

Of course you must report her. She’s ignoring the guidelines set by the govt. and the Hairdressing Federation.

If she’s not wearing PPE for the majority of her clients and if they aren’t either, what do you think might happen?

You only need ONE CLIENT with Covid to start a cluster of spreaders.

So whilst the rest of us are trying to be socially responsible, some of you think that maintaining a friendship is more important than caring about spreading Covid?

What do you think might happen to her and her business if she’s traced as a source of a cluster outbreak? Everyone will hear about it and she’ll never work again, that’s what. Her reputation will be ruined and it will also affect the reputation of her staff members.

Patients in hospitals are automatically tested for Covid so if they’re clear they can go on a non Covid ward, so staff don’t need to wear face masks on the wards.

Sweden has the same rate of infection per million of population as Spain so stop spreading fake news.

As the owner of a salon I often hear of other salons using the recommendations like this, there have been no laws given just advise so people are bending them to suit & it make me mad.??
This is peoples life’s being put at risk!
I am just an average independent salon but I spent £2000 plus on PPE before I opened & I continually spend wk on wk.
My pricing was due to be increased this April after having had no increases for 3 years so my prices have gone up £2 - £5 as I had planned, I have not charged extra for PPE. My initial cost of PPE is a loss for my business to bear not my customers as are my now ongoing costs.
Salons charging customers £2-£4 for PPE are making a huge profit off of their customers which I find distasteful to say the least as it’s probably only a cost of £1 per customer. So be aware ladies of being exploited.
We do the following:-
Appointments only
Knock & wait
Temperature taken & sanitizer used by all clients upon arrival.
Everything is disposable, gowns, aprons, hair towels, hand towels, gloves, masks.
Even the cloths we use to clean are disposable.
Each station has 3 sanitation sprays, for cleaning the chair & surrounding area & for cleaning all items used on the client.
We have a sterilization box for combs, brushes etc.
Backwash chairs are washed after each client as is normal but the products we use are now stronger.
We have screens between each station & although we don’t have to because we have the screens we have reduced our chair occupancy to 50%.
Myself & my girls wear both visor & mask while dealing with clients but only visors when having a break.
We wear disposable gloves & aprons.
There is a 15min slot for cleaning & PPE between each client resulting in 2 - 2& half hours of non earning time per day per stylist which is a loss to the salon as the stylist is still paid, but it is a cost that I will bare to keep everyone safe & my salon open.
I have also bought a fantastic machine that is used in hospitals that is switched on all day & runs on a program of refresh every 3 mins to sanitize the air & all surfaces in the salon, an added cost of £700 but worth it when I am able to reassure my ladies that the salon is safe.
It is hard work & costly but all salons & other public going places should be going above & beyond to keep people safe & keep us from having another lockdown.
So kittylester yes I completely understand your concern as I too would be questioning that if she’s not doing the basic with a mask what else isn’t being done!
A stylish I know from another salon has no cleaning breaks between clients “I am stacked out all day” are her words but she has been told it is fine as the salon has a ‘magic’ spray that she just quickly sprays on the chair!! It makes me mad??
Kittylester I hope you get sorted elsewhere as that’s what I advise you to do, look elsewhere for a responsible hairdressers, if your friend values your health like this then you shouldn’t be worried about upsetting her, as I’m sorry to say she doesn’t seem worried about you!

Sad to lose a friend but better than becoming seriously ill with this dreadful virus.

I have to say my hairdresser's is doing all the right things - the stylists wear masks and visors, not all seats are used - in fact they are seeing fewer people and working longer hours - and there is a perspex screen on either side of each work station. I felt really comfortable being there. Those who don't make that effort don't deserve the custom.

She is the 'professional's here so should take the lead in my view and follow the guidelines. And, as I said, if she is so lackadaisical in this aspect how much more is she going to skim over. It's all very well her doing it when I ask but I'm not there all the time.

This is difficult because your complaint has changed throughout the course of this thread. You were advised to ask her to use PPE when you're the client. You don't seem to be willing to do that.
You just want to report her for breaking the RULES. You've now said as you're not there all the time she could still be breaking the RULES.
Just go ahead and report her, a friendship of 20 years and having a trusted hairdresser means nothing to you.
I wish you luck finding another hairdresser that can cope with your "difficult " hair.

Talk to your hairdresser tell her what you want. She's been doing what YOU want all these years and now when SHE needs you, you're letting her down by not telling her what you need. I'm assuming she, after all these years knows you well. Be a decent grown-up, don't be petty by spreading your thoughts to her other customers - talk to her.
Looks to me she's trying to keep her business afloat.
Talk to her - bet she's listened to many of your difficulties over the years. Be loyal and tell her what you feel and stop gossiping to her other customers.
Actually as I think of this just get another stylist - your hairdresser deserves more loyal customers than you. I'm sure this is difficult to read - the truth often is difficult to read. If the cap fits.....

I wouldn’t report her but if you feel uncomfortable have a word with her and even mention about the ‘ rules’ people are having a hard enough time without this. For the record my hairdresser wears a visor and comes to my house I have the door open and sit as near to it as possible. She’s lovely and. A friend as well couldn’t be that nasty as to report her.

Hairdresser last Wednesday for a cut and he was wearing mask visor and apron and so were all the staff and he requested customers to wear masks. Bit awkward for a hair cut but it looks fine. Used alternate stations and they were sanitised in between. They wanted card payment . It all worked and as the juniors are young and giddy I was glad of the precautions .

Who are all these people who cough and sneeze directly at other people? I get hay fever, and sometimes I sneeze, but I'm not a child, I can manage to turn away and sneeze into my arm or a handkerchief. There are very few colds about - nowhere to catch them - and surely anybody who felt ill would stay at home.

I sympathise with your concerns and I’m grateful that so far my hairdresser is following advice as I’m due for my second visit next week.
kittylester if she’s really a friend, have the difficult conversation and tell her you’ll be reporting her if she doesn’t comply with the advice.

That will solve two problems:
- she’ll be absolutely aware of the requirements for protecting clients and staff
- she’ll know who has reported her instead of having to wonder who did

It won’t be your worry any more because
she’ll probably not want you in her salon again and you’ll be safely in another more safety conscious salon.

If it is a ‘guideline’ you have nothing to report. They are not breaking any rules, if you want them to wear PPE while treating you you only have to ask, as they say. If you’re not happy with that change salon. The ball is in your court

I don't know about reporting her although I would definitely tell her why I wouldn't be going, I think that I agree with the OP that if she is not doing this, the other elements of Health and Safety are not being observed. Although I think there is probably minimum risk if a mask is worn, why take the chance over a hair cut!

As there has been a change to what hairdressers are supposed to do,I would wonder past the salon and have a look it maybe since your other friend has been she has started to obey the rules.If not then find another hairdresser you maybe pleased
sometimes a change of hairdresser can get you a new nicer hairstyle.
I still think you should think about the advice given from the other grans as usual sound advice.

Two things spring to mind reading the posts:-

Sweden did not go into lockdown or impose wearing of masks everything carried on as normal. They wanted to flatten the curve not overwhelm services and it seems to have worked. Speaking to a Swedish customer he was puzzled at our restrictions.

My husband was in hospital last week and a lot of the staff had their masks under their noses.

If she's wearing a mask then it's unlikely that you will catch anything. You too. I've been going to my hairdresser since the end of lockdown where I live and no one has caught it from hair salons! To report her, in my opinion, is unnecessary.

I would prefer to speak to the salon owner before reporting but point out that any of her customers might have done so already.

I wouldn't go back. She is obviously flouting the rules and probably by not wearing PPE putting pressure on the other stylists to do the same. So apart from risking the health of clients also risking the health of staff. I hope it gets brought to the attention of environmental health. As others have said wearing a visor only is no protection to others and only protects the wearer's eyes. They should always be worn with a mask. And masks should always cover mouth and nose. I get irritated seeing people with their nose uncovered as there is no protection from the mask then.

The same thing happened to me. I’d been with my hairdresser for 34 years and I considered her to be a friend. She had had her own salon but then became a mobile hairdresser. She would come to my home to highlight/cut my hair and cut my husband’s. As soon as the government gave the go ahead at the beginning of July, I texted her and we arranged a date for her to come round. There was no mention of PPE however and after fretting about it for a few days, texted her again to check. She told me she’d wear a mask if I wanted her to but that ladies she’d been going to were happy for her to be mask-free and have their hair cut in the garden. When I pointed out I’d be having highlights and would need to be inside over a sink she had no answers. I cancelled the appointment; I was horrified she was taking the situation so lightly and had clearly been attending clients throughout lockdown. She knew I’d had a C19 death in our family but it didn’t occur to her to consider her practice.
I found a local hairdresser via Facebook and couldn’t be happier with their attention to detail - the practices already identified by previous Gnetters. I certainly felt safe and I’m really happy with the results - which is an added bonus.

Kittylester a true friend should be able to have difficult conversations even though sometimes it takes a lot of courage to do so. To simply report her without pointing out your reasons is not really fair. Yes she should be complying but give her the chance the explain why she's not and to change things accordingly.
