Lack of hair salon precautions.

First trip to hairdresser on Friday. Very impressed with all the Covid arrangements. I had to wear a mask - obviously - waited outside for door to be unlocked, temperature taken before entry, sanitised hands from automatic dispenser, one use disposable cloak instead of usual cape. She wore visor and mask. Sanitised hands again before paying. And on top of that, I went in with extremely long, tatty hair and came out with a modern short hairstyle! One very happy customer

My daughter has a salon, she and her staff all wear both a mask and visor and also have a policy that the client wears a mask unless they have a reason not to.
Not wearing a mask and visor is non-negotiable and against regulations.

Do you really report friends of 20 years when you can ask them to wear a mask was it your friend that did your hair or someone else?

Tell your hairdresser she is unwise and illegal. Do it anonymously if necessary. I expect other clients will report her. PPE is mandatory not optional.

She will wear it if asked, so ask her to wear it whilst doing your hair, she'll loose your business if she doesn't. If other customers don't ask her to, let that be their problem, don't fret over it

It does seem unfair when other hairdressers are going to do much trouble and expense really to cover the guidelines then she is not . My mobile hairdresser has to have disposable gowns etc and it all adds up . It is a difficult one but if everyone flouts the regulations all the hairdressers would have to shut again .

A visor alone is of no benefit to anyone. It only creates a funnel to blast exhaled breath directly onto the customer sitting underneath it.
At best it will protect the wearer’s eyes but that’s about it.

Most folk I see who are wearing don’t even wear them properly and folk are going around with them tipped at an angle barely covering their mouth.

I think it's time to find another hairdresser kitty. It doesn't sound as if she's taking the situation seriously at all, and as you say, you won't feel as if you can trust that she's adhering to any of the other safety measures. It's really not worth putting your friendship ahead of your own safety.

Are you on Facebook? Perhaps you could ask in one of your local groups about trusted hairdressers and the measures they have in place. Alternatively, walk past them and have a peek through the windows to see how they're operating.

I could have a word but I would still worry that she is letting other systems slip eg sanitising the chairs. She doesn't use disposable bibs nor is there a screen on reception. It's a worry!

Having said that, could you not have a quiet chat with your friend? She’s likely to be losing many customers.

My hairdresser was wearing a visor and mask and plastic apron. I wore a mask throughout. The chairs were sanitised after each use. There were chairs outside to wait in. The door was kept open and the fan was on.
No magazines of course and no nice cup of tea and biscuit but that was fine. No extra charge either. I'll be back there.
Dentist next week. Wonder what that'll be like?

Why risk your health, possibly your life - for the sake of nice hair? It's complete madness. Find another hairdresser that takes safety seriously or consider just tying it back!

My hair salon asks you to arrive at your allotted time, have your temperature taken, wear a mask, leave your bag in a special sanitised cupboard, hand-sanitise. My hairdresser wears a visor and a mask, all the implements are sanitised, payment is by card only. Awful, but there it is.

With much trepidation I had my hair cut in July.

The salon asked me:
-not to arrive until my allotted appointment time
-to wear a mask
-took my home contact details - in case of either myself or another client having Covid (and I did but not in the time-frame necessary to inform them)
-sanitised the chair in my prescence
-gave me an enormous plastic disposable cape to wear which covered me and my bag
-had markings on the floor as to where to stand to pay, card only
-the hairdresser wore a mask and visor
-the tip was dropped directly into the hairdresser's own bag

I felt safe and protected and will be happy to return. There was an additional fee of £4.00 to cover the above but I felt that quite understandable in these difficult circumstances.

If your friend is not doing the above, have a quiet word with her. If after several days you see that there are still no changes, you should advise her that you will need to report her. It would probably be the end of your relationship 'though.

Hopefully, she will soon realise that everyone has a part to play in defeating Covid. Perhaps she does not realise that hairdressers are passing the costs of providing PPE etc., to customers? Would it help if she knew this?

Kittylester as you have known your hairdresser for such a long time could you not talk to her first before reporting her. I understand you feel anxious now about using her salon.

Can I just chip in here and say I don't really understand how a hairdresser wearing just a visor is protecting the client. Think about it: for most of the process, the hairdresser is standing over the client. Were they to sneeze or cough, any droplets would hit the visor and then be directed downwards - onto the client who is sitting below them. This really doesn't make sense to me. My hairdresser wears a visor and a mask. Much better.

I have not been back to my usual salon, they were supposed to be phoning clients to advise when they would be opening again. However, a colleague of mine has a daughter, well qualified in hairdressing and has all the PPE, visors etc. She is self employed and going mobile, so I asked if she would book me in as she wanted to build up her client base. In six weeks I've heard nothing from her or her mum. She can't want work that badly can she???

My hairdresser is great. Marquee outside in the garden to wait in. One way traffic. Doors kept open. She wears a visor and I wear a mask. As it's the only thing I've done in months it was quite a relief to see how careful she is. Doesn't wear a plastic apron but changes a washable one between clients for environmental reasons.

Ah that's a shame kittylester. Good hairdressers, that "know" your hair are hard to come by!

I think my trust has gone now. As I said, if she ignores that she probably wont be doing the other things either.

The hairdresser has given you the correct advise if she was wearing a visor as that is all she will have been advised to wear
If she’s not wearing a visor then she is going against government advise

"This should take the form of a clear visor that covers the face and provides a barrier between the wearer and the client from respiratory droplets caused by sneezing, coughing or speaking," the guidance continues.

"Visors must fit the user and be worn properly. It should cover the forehead, extend below the chin, and wrap around the side of the face."

A Government spokesperson said: "We continue to keep these measures under review."

My hairdresser wears a visor but nothing else well I don’t mean nothing else she wears her home clothes but nothing else in the way of formal PPE but I m happy with that

Seems a bit of a shame to report her though without asking her first. Would you not feel comfortable just giving her a ring and asking her? If you've been with her for so long, it seems a shame to stop now when the issue might easily be resolved.
