Children's colds

I don't think it's panicking to test. After all the symptoms might be milder in children but they could pass it on to other more vulnerable members of the family or wider community. This seems quite an unpredictable illness so I do feel it's important to be as careful as we can whilst trying to make sure life goes on.

The common cold is spread the same way as coronavirus. If children are catching the common cold, that means the Covid19 precautions in their school / nursery etc are not very effective, since Covid19 precautions should also prevent transmission of rhinoviruses and other coronaviruses.

Who’s panicking?confused My dd was following guidelines as given by the NHS. Given that her little one was hospitalised, including a blue-light emergency, three times last year for respiratory problems, a test seemed eminently sensible. Not only that, but her other GM has had an organ transplant so it’s pretty important for them to know and be prepared.

We’ve been told that a runny nose/cold symptoms are not present with coronavirus so why these over-the-top reactions? Small children regularly average 12 colds per year and we’ll never get back to normal if every one sparks a panic. Anyway coronavirus is nothing in small kids.

Our DGS (3) went for a test today after having croup and ending up in A&E last night. Apparently if you roll up with any respiratory problem you need to have a test. Whole family is self-isolating until test results are back tomorrow.

This will be the new norm as schools are back and colds and sniffles go around!

My two year old grandson had to have a Covid19 test a few weeks ago as he was running a very temperature, seemed unwell, and had been sick several times. The test came back negative and it turned out he had tonsillitis. Both his parents are doctors, but first thought of the virus rather than the tonsillitis it turned out to be. Luckily one day of the marvellous banana medicine and he was as right as rain.

He's not been back Tanith. He was there last week. Currently self isolating with his mummy who is also self isolating till results same as your DD SueDonim. He didn't like the test - but the testers were giving chocolate to people with children? so that helped!

Yes, I think it may well be the new normal. My 2yo GD also had a CV test last week (she thought it was all hilarious!) as she had a slight sniffle and was wheezy. She’s prone to wheezing so that’s nothing new, but the alternative was that she’d have to stay home from nursery for two weeks. That’s very difficult as her dad is a farmer and this is harvest time and my dd works FT.

The testing centre also tested my dd even though she hadn’t asked for it and both results were negative, coming back in just over 12 hours.

It's going to be chaos as soon as autumn sets in with children at schools with their sniffles and coughs. I can see it coming.

I don’t understand why he’s gone back to the childminder if you waiting for test results?

Yesterday evening we had to attend a testing centre for DGS2 who has a cold with enlarged tonsils, a cough, runny nose and says his milk tastes funny. He is 2. DD2 was told to do this by NHS24 and also sent to hospital for check as slightly out of breath when running around. He has just gone back to childminder. The testing centres have been quite busy with children as they have been back in school for 1 ½ weeks. Still awaiting results but childminder is saying all children with cold or flu symptoms even just a runny nose must be tested before she can take them back. Given that children can have a cold every month, this means everyone with children may become regular visitors to the test centres. I'm not complaining as this has been a dreadful heartbreaking virus but do you think this is part of the new normal?
