What is your favourite proverb?

So many to choose from, but one of mine is;

‘The road to hell is paved with good intentions’.

A little learning is a dangerous thing.

If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much room.

Would you be as quick in my grave?
Sitting in my father’s chair.

This thread is bringing back memories.
I can hear my mum's voice saying, "money doesn't grow on trees."
I use, "actions speak louder than words," to my dh.

There’s a lid for every pot. (I wish my daughter could find a lid ?)
If you look too long in the mirror, you will see the devil behind you. (My Grandmother, not sure if I have remembered it correctly...)

I rather like the one my wife came up with when someone was going on about all the illegals.
"Racism is a pigment of your imagination."

An ounce of praise is worth a ton of criticism.

'Everything in it's place and a place for everything.'
'The devil makes work for idle hands'
'A stitch in time saves nine'
My nan was fond of saying these when we were children.

Who said, apart from me,
"Your age is not just a number; it's the number of years we've had to put up with you!"?

A cauliflower is just a cabbage that has been to College. Mark Twain l think.^
Twain was also attributed with:
"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt,"
But there's no evidence that he actually said it. Never the less it's a useful proverb when the political threads overheat.
If you check The Bible you will find something very similar in: Proverbs 17:28.

Another regular mis-quote, this time to President Lincoln:
"In the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years."

"Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier." -Mother Teresa

Think I made this up but "you don't realise that your shoes let water in until it rains"

Lemongrove Sorry teacher! Afraid you're wrong!
There's something called "www" (world wide web) out there containing millions of proverbs, some charming, some charming (not!), some rude, some clever, in fact there's a proverb to suit any occasion!
There's no room or need for DIY proverbs! grin

Mamardoit Fri 04-Sept-20 20:17:28

You can't put an old head on young shoulders.

I remember wondering what my Gran meant when she said this.

lemongrove Fri 04-Sept-20 19:57:24

Horses for courses.

Calendargirl Fri 04-Sept-20 15:41:01

Not really a proverb, but wise words from my mum;

If you have a friend, keep that friend,
But never let that friend your secrets know,
For if that friend should turn your foe
Then all the world your secrets know.

Devorgilla Fri 04-Sept-20 13:32:57

From my paternal grandmother -

'Never trouble trouble 'til trouble troubles you'.

From my maternal grandmother

'Love many, trust few, but always paddle your own canoe.'

Rufus2, I like your style.

Rufus2 Fri 04-Sept-20 11:47:52

"No one is listening until you fart"

grannyqueenie Fri 04-Sept-20 00:46:41

Another one brought on proverbs!
“ a borrower nor a lender be”, “don't wear your heart on your sleeve” were two of my mother’s favourites, I've managed to abide by the 1st, but probably failed dismally on the 2nd!

Bobbysgirl19 Fri 04-Sept-20 00:11:02

Many a true word spoken in jest.

A stitch in time, saves nine.

Nanderin Thu 03-Sept-20 22:22:16

When you come to the end of your rope tie a knot in it and hang on.
