I can no longer sit cross legged or sit with my feet tucked up on the sofa. I can't bend in the morning to put my socks on either until i have taken my painkillers.

loss not lose.!!!!

In general, I have only lost things I don’t miss. I can’t run since I damaged my knee, so I set out earlier and don’t rush, and so I enjoy the world around me. My eyesight to less sharp, so I don’t worry about the state of my carpet because I can’t see bits on it, so I don’t waste time on unnecessary housework. I was never a great beauty, but now I’m old and grey and have ‘lost my looks’, I have also lost that fear of how I look to other people, and I can dress and wear my hair however I feel like.

Am I the only person on GN who is enjoying growing older?

Oh yes, I struggle to hang washing out due to the need to raise my arms, I can't lift anything heavy or open jars these days either. It's also an effort to climb stairs.
I'm just generally cracking up and I'm only mid '60s ?

My memory since I came off HRT!

tanith Mon 31-Aug-20 12:48:41

Kneeling and then getting up again, I can but very slowly and with something to grab on the way up. My knees just don’t like bending far. ?

I'm sure I used to be pain free most of the time (apart from menstrual migraine which was bad enough) when I was younger. I can't do anything for any length of time such as pruning in the garden, sitting at a long-winded sewing project or the like without paying for it afterwards by getting aches and pains - neck ache, backache, hip hurting which is very annoying. I'm falling apart.

My granny told me do everything before you are 75. Things go downhill after.

These days I can’t change the duvet covers without a sit down, and the thought of having visitors and having to do a “spring clean” fills me with dread. When I was younger I did a full days work on the farm, went to bed dog tired, had a good nights sleep and woke refreshed ready for another hard day. These days I go to bed at 9.00 pm exhausted by cooking dinner and washing up and wake tired as a dog.

Glad I did all that travelling, and walking years ago. At least I can look back on my experiences and enjoy the memories. I took Gran’s advice.

I have lost the ability to spell correctly. I often have to refer to a dictionary these days.

kittylester Mon 31-Aug-20 13:30:51

Me too, shysal, but I think its using spell check that has caused that.

My knees are like yours Tanith.

And, nina, I seem to have lost hand strength too.

I have drafted in DH for bed changing and we have a cleaner!!

merlotgran Mon 31-Aug-20 13:39:18

I can no longer kneel but I'm still bendy so I can manage to do anything that requires bending double.

I can no longer climb a ladder higher than the third rung.

I can't run. It's a sort of stiff legged slightly faster waddle. grin

boodymum67 Mon 31-Aug-20 13:51:59

I can no longer walk, run, dance, swim, drive, wash and dress myself or cook.
It`s been like this since I was in my late 40`s.
I have MS

greengreengrass Mon 31-Aug-20 13:54:18

Yes, I'm not sixty yet but have the same with bending.

I'm hoping there is hope when i get back to doing yoga in the mornings.

I had got a trapped nerve in my back year before last and since then I've been more cautious about lifting.

but that is a good thing actually, because I hurt my back putting the bins out too quickly yes really and now I do things more slowly.

Sometimes I think I have senior moments but when I listen to my DD aged 15 I realise she is actually worse than me, i.e where is x mum
she asks

and I go into the kitchen and I know exactly where it is and it is usually right in front of her.

So I take heart from that eh, I'm trying to keep learning.

I was amused to hear Joanna Lumley say how delighted she was when her doctor wrote 'Still cuts her own toenails,' as the result of a check up.

So can I but I have to sit on the loo to do it. It's the perfect height for a comfortable reach and focal distance! grin

kittylester Mon 31-Aug-20 15:02:47

I can cut my toe nails if I put my foot up on my dressing table stool. Though actually, the girl who does my feet cuts them more often than I do.

paddyanne Mon 31-Aug-20 15:23:22

My handwriting's a disgrace,I used to have lovely neat writing now its a scrawl at best .That'll be because the only thing I handwrite is Christmas cards .Maybe I should give myself lines to copy every day to improve it .

annep1 Mon 31-Aug-20 15:31:42

I was about to write I can't bend and touch my toes but I just tried and did. I'll probably suffer for it later. Apart from physical ailments this is a lovely stage of life.
Boodymun67 you've made me realise how lucky I am.

Teetime Mon 31-Aug-20 15:36:36

Annoyingly I cant seem to open anything- jars, biscuits, doorknobs- anything except of course a large bar of chocolate.

Teetime Mon 31-Aug-20 15:36:49

and a bottle of gin/wine.

geekesse Mon 31-Aug-20 15:39:32

Teetime

and a bottle of gin/wine.

Oh, nothing on earth will ever stop me opening a bottle of gin. I can find superhuman powers for that!

kittylester Mon 31-Aug-20 15:49:21

I've got a gadget for opening things. It does wine bottles easily!!

EllanVannin Mon 31-Aug-20 16:13:32

There's not much I can't do if I put my mind to it. It's a case of having to when you live alone. I'm not as swift as I once was and the getup and go is now indecisive, but at least I don't suffer aches and pains like many others, with backs and legs.
Although I have osteo in my thumb joints I've still got a grip of steel. At near 80 I'm not complaining grin

Niobe Mon 31-Aug-20 16:28:27

I knelt down on the floor without thinking once and jarred my knee so badly it took 2 months to recover. Since then I am very careful how I kneel down. A couple of years ago we went on a tour of China and I was the only one in the group who could use the squatting toilets without assistance but I’m not sure I could do it now at 68.

However I think that Covid has put a stop to any travel to exotic parts of the world now anyway so that doesn’t bother me.

Herbie9 Mon 31-Aug-20 16:29:32

Laughterlines It's so true - do everything before you're 75! I belonged to two walking clubs but had a nasty fall (sapling in long grass!) and I swear that as a consequence my osteoarthritis kicked in and my rambling days were over. My mobility is poor but I can hobble around with my 3 wheeler but how I missed rambling and cannot believe how I rely on strong painkillers now. Do everythin g while you can as no one knows what tomorrow might bring? Take care everyobe.
