Illte apparently both. Blackcurrant drinks are especially mentioned as are any red drinks, any product with artificial colourings or flavourings and artificial sweeteners.

All the mums who stick to milk and water only are apparently doing the right thing. Curiously nothing was mentioned about the whole fruit. I must find that thread and ask about it.

Our children drank loads of blackcurrant juice and had no problems at all.

Is it something in blackcurrants or an ingredient in the drink?

Blackcurrants are quite rare in the shops now but we ate tons of them as children. Blackcurrant picking in the fields was a summer pocket money job.

sodapop

We gave our children many things which are now deemed harmful as Calendargirl said
Things have moved on and no doubt will continue to do so. We did what we thought was right at the time no need for feelings of guilt at all. I didn't know about the blackcurrant thing though.
I do feel guilty about smoking in the car when the children were in the back.

Yep, I agree. I can't help feeling guilty about some things, but really there's no point. We all do the best we can at the time. I hadn't come across the blackcurrant juice thing either. It was thought to be a good thing, years ago...vitamin C and all that.

As tea is a diuretic and contains caffeine surely it’s a no no for children?
Apparently some paediatricians say all squash is bad for children. Something to do with artificial sweeteners.

I had never heard of this either! When mine were small they preferred orange squash anyway and even then it had to be very weak. My GC prefer water or a cup of tea!

Esspee Tue 01-Sept-20 07:40:31

Apparently there are grandparents who give their grandchildren blackcurrant and other squashes even after being told not to do so by the mother.

A sure recipe for a breakdown in the relationship.

Not worth worrying about. As Calendargirl says it will be something else in the future. When mine were small some mothers were very sniffy about squash and it had to be pure fruit juice, but later pure fruit juice was deemed bad for children. Mine had very weak squash - coloured water really- so it can’t have mattered.

It’s no use beating yourself up about things you did decades ago which now are deemed unhealthy or bad for you or your family.

At the time, you did what you felt was right and acceptable.

No doubt in 30 years time, it will be other things that should have been banned or not allowed.

Only recently found out as our GD had to stop drinking black currant for that reason. But, both my children drank it when younger.

Well it's early fellow Gransnetters and I've already learned (via Mumsnet) that you shouldn't give children blackcurrant juice / squash as it affects their bladder control.

I gave my children ribena, thinking that was a healthy option. Now I feel guilty as DS2 wet the bed for years.

Did you know this? Was I just a shit mum?
