I rarely drink, but tonight I have been looking forward to a glass or two of wine. Can I open the bottle? No way. I have three gadgets, no success. It is a screw top and I just cannot grip it.

Run very hot water over the screw cap and then grip it with a tea towel and twist. If the cap is metal, the hot water will make it expand and so loosen it to open. Cheers! wine

If all else fails I grasp the cap end of the bottle in the hinge end of an open door, close door until bottle is held tight, then turn the bottle. Not pretty but it works!

No use to tonight but these are invaluable.

Stab a hole in the top ? Actually don’t. You might have a terrible accident

Do you have any nutcrackers?

Cover the screw top with a flannel or dishcloth to stop it slipping and you might not have to grip too hard.

Ask a neighbour? With mask in of course!

I have the Lakeland gadget, and another one bought recently. No grip. Tried the wet dishcloth. No grip. Nutcrackers was going to be my next resort.
The. DH came home and laughed because he did it easily.

Thank you!
But what do I do when DH is not here any more?
Still the hot water method to try next time.

Put the bottle top in the door jamb Pull the door to hold it tight while you give it a twist Foolproof method and you can do it now not wait to buy a gadget
Works every time invaluable

The walls and doors in my house are so flimsy, I'd be afraid of splitting the door jamb!

Littleannie Sat 03-Oct-20 21:30:27

I find wearing a rubber glove does the trick. It gives extra grip.

NotTooOld Sat 03-Oct-20 21:30:40

Don't do the door jamb method, you will end up with splintered wood. The hot water method is best, done it myself many a time.

Chewbacca Sat 03-Oct-20 21:38:29

That's what I feared NotTooOld, it wouldn't take much to splinter the door frame in my house. I use the hot water method when I can't undo the top on a bottle of nail varnish. If I drop the whole neck of the bottle in hot water, the gummed up nail varnish softens very quickly and the top comes off easily.

Rubber gloves on both hands stops the bottle itself moving and gives extra grip on the top.Always works for me .
