This "quote" thing. ?

Hello all, good wishes to you.

I've noticed that there are more uses of the "quote" facility.

Yes, it's very useful when wanting to refer back to a specific post, but as someone posted (so sorry, but I can't remember who) "you wouldn't repeat someone's comment/remark before responding to it in conversation" (or something like that) so why are so many people doing it? confused

Thanks @vickysponge. X

Thank you to those who made constructive posts.

Yes, it's very useful when responding to a remark made a few posts back, helps keep things in context.

But used as a sort of posting "tic" ? Well, it's just a bit odd, and I'm some cases, almost narcissistic.

I agree with you here phoenix. grin

I think the quote facility is an excellent idea

vickyspinge, could you explain your last comment to me please.

Callistemon Sat 03-Oct-20 22:24:34

BlueBelle

But why does it have to be so big merlotgran
If I want to quote your post It’s simple enough

It's very useful when it's a long thread and you need to refer to a post a few pages back.

But if you use the quote button it takes up loads of room

It doesn't really matter how much room it takes up as it is all virtual.
Each thread is limited by the number of posts ie 1,000, not by the length of the thread.

We can skip the ones we don't want to read, and then have to sit on the norty step for not reading the whole thread!

I actually think some people just love a good old bicker on here. Very entertaining though ?

BlueBelle

I forgot to bold or italic it, takes a second imy fault I ll do it again merlotgran

The part of my post that you quoted, BlueBelle was not in italics so could be something you'd written
Or
-The part of my post that you quoted, BlueBelle was not in italics so could be something you'd written-

Just so much neater that that big old grey box with perhaps one word under it

But you've taken up more space with your explanation than a simple quote would have done. confused

Ooooh is the @ feature actually working returnofflyinghandbag? Or perhaps I should direct that to vickysponge. Were you notified vicky?

Any of my misspellings are the fault of autocorrect!
I like the occasional malapropism; they can be very amusing.
My dear MIL was an aficionado of the Spoonerism ( although she never did realise it)
And I had a dear aunt who repeated the last sentence of what someone had said to her before replying.

All little quirks but it made life interesting.

I know it’s shocking isn’t it? Thank goodness for Netflix!

I see your point Phoenix but I get far more irritated with posters who absolutely refuse to read a thread. The one about the child whose work was supposedly ripped up was a case in point. Do posters really just read the OP and then jump in with their post regardless?

NfkDumpling Sat 03-Oct-20 22:44:54

I use it a lot in the family WhatsApp group when there's several people chatting so it's obvious which comment I'm replying to.

I only use it on GN when its a short comment otherwise it's not obvious which bit of the comment being replied to.

If that makes sense.

Ellianne Sat 03-Oct-20 22:48:00

Oh yes Lucca, that one was funny. Two steps forward, three steps back.

phoenix Sat 03-Oct-20 22:48:09

Now now, Vickysponge and whatever Flyinghandbags latest reincarnation is, play nicely girls!

The OP was a general observation, quite a few people use the"quote" facility, and my post was a general observation, however if you chose to take it personally.............

Chewbacca Sat 03-Oct-20 22:56:45

I never did get to read what happened in the end of the "child's work being ripped up" thread Lucca? Did it get resolved in the end?

phoenix Sat 03-Oct-20 22:58:11

Makes perfect sense, NfkDumpling!
