Hello all, good wishes to you.

I've noticed that there are more uses of the "quote" facility.

Yes, it's very useful when wanting to refer back to a specific post, but as someone posted (so sorry, but I can't remember who) "you wouldn't repeat someone's comment/remark before responding to it in conversation" (or something like that) so why are so many people doing it? confused

I see your point Phoenix but I get far more irritated with posters who absolutely refuse to read a thread. The one about the child whose work was supposedly ripped up was a case in point. Do posters really just read the OP and then jump in with their post regardless?

Don't get me started on Saturday night TV monk08.

I know it’s shocking isn’t it? Thank goodness for Netflix!

I think the quote facility is an excellent idea

Well said x

Callistemon ???

Callistemon

Any of my misspellings are the fault of autocorrect!
I like the occasional malapropism; they can be very amusing.
My dear MIL was an aficionado of the Spoonerism ( although she never did realise it)
And I had a dear aunt who repeated the last sentence of what someone had said to her before replying.

All little quirks but it made life interesting.

Agree Calli! grin

Ooooh is the @ feature actually working returnofflyinghandbag? Or perhaps I should direct that to vickysponge. Were you notified vicky?

BlueBelle

I forgot to bold or italic it, takes a second imy fault I ll do it again merlotgran

The part of my post that you quoted, BlueBelle was not in italics so could be something you'd written
Or
-The part of my post that you quoted, BlueBelle was not in italics so could be something you'd written-

Just so much neater that that big old grey box with perhaps one word under it

But you've taken up more space with your explanation than a simple quote would have done. confused

JuneRose Sat 03-Oct-20 22:26:58

I actually think some people just love a good old bicker on here. Very entertaining though ?

Callistemon Sat 03-Oct-20 22:24:34

BlueBelle

But why does it have to be so big merlotgran
If I want to quote your post It’s simple enough

It's very useful when it's a long thread and you need to refer to a post a few pages back.

But if you use the quote button it takes up loads of room

It doesn't really matter how much room it takes up as it is all virtual.
Each thread is limited by the number of posts ie 1,000, not by the length of the thread.

We can skip the ones we don't want to read, and then have to sit on the norty step for not reading the whole thread!

vickyspinge, could you explain your last comment to me please.

Thank you to those who made constructive posts.

Yes, it's very useful when responding to a remark made a few posts back, helps keep things in context.

But used as a sort of posting "tic" ? Well, it's just a bit odd, and I'm some cases, almost narcissistic.

I agree with you here phoenix. grin

At the risk of ending up on the norty step, flyinghandbags and vickyspong I think phoenix is entitled to her opinion.

I think the 'quote' thing is useful on occasions. So, I dont agree with Phoenix but that's ok.

Oh give over

Regarding the Quote facility, if something is there (and I can’t say I can remember when it first appeared ) it is obvious some people will use it .
I have always found it easy enough to follow the GN convention of highlighting, cutting and pasting and then turning it into italics but others have preferred to use square brackets, to write “Quote” at the beginning or to render it in bold (which does tend to look shouty). Sometimes it is just repeated and it can be unclear who said what.
However it is not necessary to repeat everything a person has said in order to reply to them is it?
TBH I now tend to skim over the use of the “Quote“ - but skimming diwn a thread you can see the same paragraph or sentence three or four times which I agree is irritating.
Other things such as misspelling or malapropisms, using the wrong word irritate me more but I have learned to zip it and keep my thoughts to myself. ???????
