How can that be? It makes me over 60, and yet his murder also seems only yesterday and I can remember exactly where I was at the time. Not a flippant comment, just a realisation that time really does fly...

I liked The Beatles, but was never really a fan of any one of them, although if push came to shove it would have been George.?However, the only Beatles birthdays that I can remember for some strange reason is John’s 9th October.
If John Lennon would have been 80 today....why that means that we are, well, shall we say, knocking on a bit as well.?

My small John Lennon story is that I have held a pair of his jeans - unfortunately he wasn’t in them at the time!

When he lived at Tittenhurst Park I was a teenager and lived a mile away .His seamstress lived in my close . She had the job of embroidering a single red heart on the fly of his jeans , she knew that I was a fan and kindly let me see them.

I remember waking up to the news on my bedside radio that John had been shot. He was definitely my favourite Beatle.

I have known a few people who knew them, including someone (a friend of my father) who taught John Lennon at school. Nobody was impressed.

I'm not so surprised that John would have been 80 but that he has been dead for 40 years is amazing to me.

As a teenager The Beatles were everything......George for me. They grew up with us and as we got to older teens their music was more sophisticated. Happy days.

I went to a CAMRA meeting a few years back in Liverpool ,had the meeting in the Ship & Mitre top of Dale Street , noted for its scouse .
Anyway after we boarded buses and went to the pubs around the university s and cathedrals, and one of the pubs there was plenty of gen on John as he was frequent user of it.

I saw them play in Finsbury, London in the early 60 s. Impossible to hear anything through the audience screaming. Its sad that two of the fab four died so young.

As a fanatical Beatles fan (George was my favourite), I was devastated when John was killed. They were such a big part of my life. I have spoken a few times on local radio about my escapades with them. John's son with Yoko shares the same birthday as John.

I can imagine Ellan - don't you come from Liverpool?

I remember being at a pre-Christmas work " do " when the news of his death was broadcast. There was a complete hush over the place as everyone struggled to take in the news.

My stepD shares his Birthday today and I can't even phone her because the damn phone has gone off again.sad
My broadband went off before as well.

Yes, I've bookmarked that to watch later. There are a couple of other Beatles programmes too tonight on BBC4.
I've never been as keen on John as a person compared with the other Beatles. But imo he had the best voice for their 'rock' songs.eg

Paul for romantic songs, George for his guitar playing and Ringo for his drumming. A complete musical team.

Hard to believe it's nearly 40 years since he was murdered.

A Hard Days Night is on BBC4 at 20.00
