This week will be the best chance to see Mars till 2035,
thats the year and not the time.
The planet will be visible in the eastern Sky.
Eastern Sky?
If you look straight at a domestic sattelite dish, and raise your right arm to an horizontal position. That will be east.

We looked last night. It was cloudy, not a star to be seen....except one, shining really brightly through the clouds. It was Southeast of our house, and had a slightly orange glow. Made me feel quite emotional.

Too drizzly and cloudy in my neck of East Anglia to see anything.

Clear and bright here in Portugal and good to put a name to some of the myriad stars we can see.

MayBee70 Tue 13-Oct-20 20:02:48

Darn it. It’s really cloudy here tonight.

MellowYellow Tue 13-Oct-20 15:14:37

Thank you, will take a look but not going by my satellite dish which faces the other way!

MayBee70 Tue 13-Oct-20 14:40:41

Is it just my eyesight but for a long time now Mars looks as though it’s split into two, like Saturn and looks more conical than round.

Kryptonite Tue 13-Oct-20 14:37:18

Great! Saw it the other night (while looking for meteor birthdays) and thought it had a hint of red.

leeds22 Tue 13-Oct-20 12:17:22

Thought chocolate, then cholesterol and then red planet. Hope the clouds clear.

Mars has been visible for the past couple of weeks, really clearly here in the North West. Our back door is east facing, Mars is there shining brightly through the window. It is beautiful
If you turn 90 degrees to the right you will also see Jupiter and Venus, Jupiter being the very bright one. Also Uranus will be just to the left of Mars but hard to spot. I do like looking at stars.

Reminds me of the time someone recounted the time he met Colin Pillinger (he of Beagle 2 fame) - the person being interviewed said when he met him he had a small piece of Mars in his pocket and I immediately wondered why he was carrying a piece of a chocolate bar around with him (shows how my mind works!)

High, clear and fairly bright orange at 10pm. Here we'd look towards the river (due south) then up and left.

Toadinthehole Tue 13-Oct-20 11:10:15

Yes, we’ve been looking at it for about a week now. Can’t say it looked very red especially, but will keep looking.

Mars has been visible for a few weeks now in the night sky ( I'm in Northern England) as has Saturn and Jupiter. Been fascinating me. Really disappointing when it's cloudy!! Also see Venus early morning.

The front of our house faces East and Mars has been very prominent - and very red - low in the Eastern sky for some time, but I really hope it’s clear enough to see it this evening. Odds are against it if the forecast is right though.☹️ I didn’t know the thing about the satellite dish.

Carol54 Tue 13-Oct-20 11:03:10

I thought chocolate too

Nortsat Tue 13-Oct-20 11:02:38

Thank you, Infoman, we’ll watch for it.

WOODMOUSE49 Tue 13-Oct-20 10:55:36

Don't know where our nearest dish is. Can't even see our nearest house. Will be watching from our mid Cornish home. Star grazing superb here. Hardly any light pollution,

Namsnanny Tue 13-Oct-20 10:54:56

Thank you infoman for reminding us.
Let's hope it's clear skies.smile

Aldom Tue 13-Oct-20 10:50:30

I've already been privileged to see photos of Mars on our local Facebook site. But thank you for the info. I will look for it tonight.

Aepgirl Tue 13-Oct-20 10:47:24

I don’t think I could eat an even bigger Mars!

Davida1968 Tue 13-Oct-20 10:44:05

Mine too, Laura!

LauraNorder Tue 13-Oct-20 10:37:24

My first thought was chocolate

Craftycat Tue 13-Oct-20 10:35:31

Thick cloud at the moment but maybe it will clear later & be OK tonight. I hope so as it fascinates me.

Tweedle24 Tue 13-Oct-20 10:31:49

Is that in the U.K.?

Romola Tue 13-Oct-20 10:25:08

Our next-door neighbour is a keen astronomer. Perhaps he'll let us look through his telescope - if we get a clear sky.
