Guesses?

What the government will pay will in many cases be topped up by Universal Credit.
Nobody will starve, and pub and bar staff will have no travel costs to take into account and could look for other jobs if necessary.
Is it ideal? No. If Covid numbers fall after a few weeks, then restrictions will be eased and workers return.

By the way lemongrove totally agree with your post to pinkcakes

Examples of good behaviour should be modelled from the top down, the trust in that was destroyed when Boris Johnson refused to dismiss Dominic Cummings for his blatant bad behaviour and subsequent excuses.
What sort of example was that to our young people, the message was that the rules were for little people.

But it should happen that poorer people are compensated for being forbidden to work. People on low wages or zero hours contracts should not be the ones to bear the brunt of this crisis. They are already being disproportionately affected by the disease itself, surely the first duty of a Government is to protect its people, not its mates.

That was the point Burnham was making. There is some serious money in Central Manchester and a few suburbs, but Greater Manchester includes some very poor areas.

What a lot of emojis suz
If it was said on national tv, then any government would be held to account if Manchester was receiving tuppence ha’penny and Liverpool and Lancashire regions getting millions.
Why should you simply assume that Manchester will do worse financially than the other regions? It will be allocated on number of staff and businesses, but in a fair way for all.
Andy Burnham wanted more ...it wasn’t going to happen.

He didn't actually want more. Greater Manchester has a population twice that of Liverpool. Liverpool got £44 million in extra funding. Burnham's final request was for £65 million which is less than twice £44 million.

PinkCakes

I couldn't give a toss about anything he's got to say any more. I'm sick of hearing about Covid, lockdowns, masks, safe distancing, etc., etc. It's all so bloody boring now.

Really? I mean just...really?!

lemongrove Tue 20-Oct-20 19:06:44

Am not singling out either Manchester or Liverpool, as things have been similar in London, and maybe many other cities, but the Northern cities have the really high Covid cases.
It’s spread through the younger people to the older ones, and has to be stopped, preferably by tough measures but in the end by total lockdowns if people persist in selfish behaviours.
That will impact the economy even more.

But anyway what has that to do with the low paid workers who will suffer most because of this lockdown lemon? How can anyone survive on 67% of a subsistance wage? Or don't you care if people starve? Is it better to starve than to have Covid?

lemongrove Tue 20-Oct-20 19:02:05

Some are trisher and some are Manchester’s own young people, not all students at all.The same in Liverpool too, the ones partying in the street and kicking police cars.

They aren't "Manchester's young people" lemon they are the students from all over the country this government insisted had to go to Uni and who have increased the Covid rate in nearly every city they have moved to.

trisher Tue 20-Oct-20 18:58:07

Watch him speaking and detailing the financial package they were willing to compromise on. Then tell me how good Johnson is. www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-mrYf9KyTw

lemongrove Tue 20-Oct-20 18:54:59

Burnham tried to claim that Manchester Covid figures weren’t at all bad last week.Yes, the economy is important as are livelihoods but unless we want the UK to sink back to April levels then things have to change. We have all seen the pics of Manchester’s younger people out in big groups drinking last weekend to see that so many have no regard whatsoever for others.

suziewoozie Tue 20-Oct-20 18:52:11

Hahahah- silly me, not realising that . Sorry, you’ll have to do better than that ???????BJ said it at a press briefing ??????????
.

suziewoozie Tue 20-Oct-20 18:49:33

The issue was never about going into Tier 3 - it was about economic help - sorry if that doesn’t fit the RW narrative on here.

lemongrove Tue 20-Oct-20 18:49:02

It was said at the 5 pm conference sw

lemongrove Tue 20-Oct-20 18:47:49

Why should Greater Manchester be a special case? Because Burnham decided to make a power ‘stand’ ....Liverpool and Lancashire have had to accept it, and pretty soon Yorkshire and Humberside and probably London will have to as well.
Conservative MP’s there only did it because they are afraid of losing their seats. Was anyone at all there really caring about the people getting ill with Covid and dying I wonder!

suziewoozie Tue 20-Oct-20 18:47:30

Could you give the link about Manchester getting parity please lemon Thanks so much

Whitewavemark2 Tue 20-Oct-20 18:43:39

They even had the bad grace to withdraw the £60 million that would have gone such a long way to helping those on zero hours contacts, the self employed and small businesses. It was there on the table.

My god they are an evil lot of b.........ds.

farview Tue 20-Oct-20 18:38:13

Well said trisher...

trisher Tue 20-Oct-20 18:37:14

lemon the local leaders have been talking to the government since Oct 9th, it isn't their fault things didn't happen.

trisher Tue 20-Oct-20 18:35:57

Just watched Andy Burnham in Manchester- more caring, more inspiring, more committed, more competent than the PM. It was Johnson who walked away. The Manchester leaders presented a fully costed relief budget which theywere willing to compromise on. Johnnson (to use his own words) has spewed more up the wall supporting his mates than they were asking for.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 20-Oct-20 18:35:34

Totally agree Lemongrove
