Have you ever said anything tongue in cheek only to have it fall flat on its face because the other person took it literally?
My SOH must be very esoteric (or unique to me ?) because it does happen ??
I have just jokingly commented that our planned Book Group lunch in a local pub marquee might count as a “Business or Working Lunch” which allows more than 6 according to what I read in today’s paper, only for one member to earnestly text me back to say she was sure the pub would be Covid compliant or we could split into two groups.
BTW we may possibly be 7 but will probably only be 5 or 6 as it happens.
I’ll get me coat.

My book group ( now suspended)☹️ Has one very serious (although very pleasant) lady in it, and we all spend a lot of time explaining why we’re laughing.

And mine

Remind me Spangler -are you a Grandad?

I'm honoured that you might think that, but I'm not.

We sometime get unexpected views of various people as they struggle with tablets when joining in! Amazing what you see if a person accidentally drops their tablet or holds it upside down.

kittylester, but only your top half has to look good!

Lisagran Thu 22-Oct-20 21:35:16

Only from the waist up though, kitty grin

kittylester Thu 22-Oct-20 21:28:34

The joy (?)"of Zoom though is that people can be anywhere - we talk to DH's brother in South Africa.

The downside, obviously, is that one has to try to look good!!

Jane10 Thu 22-Oct-20 21:21:12

It's just a small local group. Can't cope with larger numbers. We've been going for a while now. Why not set up ones for yourselves locally to you?

MawB2 Thu 22-Oct-20 21:18:51

Wassat? Gransnet zoom group? I'd love to be involved in that! Jane10 please could you give further details as to how to join in?

LauraNorder Thu 22-Oct-20 21:16:20

A GN zoom group? Do tell.

Marydoll Thu 22-Oct-20 20:24:34

Jane, I didn't realise there was a GN Zoom group. Is it open to everyone?

Spangler Thu 22-Oct-20 20:22:30

I put four asterisks in front of the word off, they have disappeared, how strange.

Spangler Thu 22-Oct-20 20:20:44

Funny thing humour? How right you are. Most of my career has been in management in the logistics industry. Logistics being a swank term for transport. The movement, storage and distribution of goods.

When you are in charge of a few hundred hairy arsed truck drivers some of their more profane language can rub off. But I always made a point of never swearing when reprimanding anyone, or, when asking for something to be done.

There was one particular miscreant who could make a saint swear and on this day, he was at his surliest best. Rather than give in to bad language I told him to go and indulge in sex & travel. That went right over his head, so when I gave up and said it means off! He asked what that had to do with sex and travel? I did think of explaining the metaphor but he would have thought that a metaphor was a metal fork, Sometimes it's best just to walk away.

I always tell my children a joke isn't funny unless everyone finds it funny

Chewbacca Thu 22-Oct-20 20:10:57

I am the dubious owner of a "quirky sense of humour" and nothing makes me laugh more than a genuine prat fall. When my young next door neighbour, tripped up and fell headlong into a wheelbarrow full of rotting horse manure, crashed both himself and the wheelbarrow to the ground and was sat covered in horse s**t; I could hardly breathe for laughing. Oddly enough, it took him a couple of days to see the funny side. Funny thing, humour.

Jane10 Thu 22-Oct-20 20:09:38

I'm sure our usual GN zoom group will be marking the festive season I some way. Party hats and tinsel and a wee drap swally! All is not lost.

Hetty58 Thu 22-Oct-20 20:07:53

vampirequeen, my (teenage) school report (form teacher comments) said that I had:

'A unique sense of humour'

My mother said 'That's nice - oh, unique? - that's unfortunate!

Parsley3

Due to bitter experience, I now have to pick my audience before cracking a joke.

Marydoll Thu 22-Oct-20 19:04:31

Sorry, Maw I may have killed your thread. It's a while since I have done that.

Marydoll Thu 22-Oct-20 19:03:30

What I should have said is that don't I think there will be anyone irresponsible enough to have a party, despite many of us wanting to.

Lucca Thu 22-Oct-20 18:02:01

Don’t you believe it Marydoll

Marydoll Thu 22-Oct-20 17:40:51

I don't think there will be many parties involving Gransnetters the way things are panning out.

MawB2 Thu 22-Oct-20 17:37:06

I think you must - I wonder who?
