It's quite a nice day here but I didn't go for a walk as I was expecting my son to call. He rang to say he was unwell so I took a short nap, made coffee and have spent the afternoon just looking at the I pad and crossword. I couldn't be bothered going out now so I think I am in for the day!

I am used to having my DGS Saturdays and struggling with his maths homework with him while his mum works. However I haven't seen him, except from afar, since he went back to school last month so today with no DGS and too wet to garden, I haven't done a great deal at all. I cleaned the kitchen, walked the dog, then spent all afternoon searching through ebay and etsy. It's been great!!

Do nothing far to often. Single grandfather who wonders how and what if too much !

I’ve had an unproductive day not achieving anything. Every shop I decided to visit had insane queues. I’ve bought a car seat for DGD but I don’t like it so I’ll need to go back tomorrow. Bought some snacks for the grandkids but opened them myself and found the chocolate rice cakes (I know) were all manky. Have to go back tomorrow. Went to Boots bought a couple of things, forgot something. Yep, have to go back tomorrow ...... having a glass of wine now.

When I stopped feeling guilty about doing nothing, I started to enjoy it. I had a lovely long lie in bed this morning without a blush. ☺

It's my favourite pass time! I don't feel guilty about taking time out for myself after years of working. We all deserve some me time and if for you that is doing nothing then that is absolutely fine. Obviously not to be recommended 24 hours a day just nice to relax in between household chores/cooking etc and sit and dream.

Hetty58..I just am not good at relaxing...wish I were..

Hetty58 Sat 24-Oct-20 17:36:33

Farview, I find 'doing nothing' very relaxing. I have really perfected the art of 'duvet days' and view them as just 'recharging my batteries'.

It's quite an effort - and difficult - to actually do nothing at all.

Today I did as little as possible (much easier) by getting showered and dressed, walking the dog - and making pudding and custard.

Watching films (and chatting on here) is doing something too - so that's quite enough for now, I believe!

I’ve done nothing most of the day, finished a book I was reading (Armadale written in 1851) and have started another jigsaw, so , nothing done of any consequence.

mamaa Sat 24-Oct-20 17:34:02

Doing it now...as can't really justify playing on laptop reading GN threads as work, can I?

farview Sat 24-Oct-20 17:29:25

I dont like 'doing nothing '...makes me feel really anxious

grannyqueenie Sat 24-Oct-20 17:28:03

stephenmarra and that is exactly why “doing nothing” is so tiring!!! ?

Shrub Sat 24-Oct-20 17:27:43

I remember my mother often saying to me
"sometimes I sits and thinks, and sometimes I just sits". I do both well.

BlueSky Sat 24-Oct-20 16:48:08

No I couldn’t possibly sit and do nothing. I must go out every day, nowadays a walk, pre Covid shopping or window shopping, a drive to places nearby and a cup of coffee etc. I just need a couple of hours out of the house. If I wanted to stay in it would be because I was feeling unwell, then I would watch tv and nap.

LauraNorder Sat 24-Oct-20 16:32:25

Finally a question which is my area of expertise.

Stephenmarra Sat 24-Oct-20 16:32:25

This is how I do nothing more often than not. grin grin grin

Recently, I was diagnosed with A.A.A.D.D. –
Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder.

This is how it manifests:

I decide to water my garden.
As I turn on the hose in the driveway,
I look over at my car and decide it needs washing.

As I start toward the garage,
I notice mail on the porch table that
I brought up from the mail box earlier.

I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car.

I lay my car keys on the table,
put the junk mail in the garbage can under the table,
and notice that the can is full.

So, I decide to put the bills
back
on the table and take out the garbage first.

But then I think,
since I’m going to be near the mailbox
when I take out the garbage anyway,
I may as well pay the bills first.

I take my check book off the table,
and see that there is only one check left.
My extra checks are in my desk in the study,
so I go inside the house to my desk where
I find the
can of Pepsi I’d been drinking.

I’m going to look for my checks,
but first I need to push the Pepsi aside
so that I don’t accidentally knock it over.

The Pepsi is getting warm,
and I decide to put it in the refrigerator to keep it cold.

As I head toward the kitchen with the Pepsi,
a vase of flowers on the counter
catches my eye–they need water.

I put the Pepsi on the counter and
discover my reading glasses that
I’ve been searching for all morning.
I decide I better put them back on my desk,
but first I’m going to water the flowers.

I set the glasses back down on the counter,
fill a container with water and suddenly spot the TV remote.
Someone left it on the kitchen table.

I realize that tonight when we go to watch TV,
I’ll be looking for the remote,
but I won’t remember that it’s on the kitchen table,
so I decide to put it back in the den where it belongs,
but first I’ll water the flowers.

I pour some water in the flowers,
but quite a bit of it spills on the floor.

So, I set the remote back on the table,
get some towels and wipe up the spill.

Then, I head down the hall trying to
remember what I was planning to do.
At the end of the day:
the car isn’t washed
the bills aren’t paid
there is a warm can of
Pepsi sitting on the counter
the flowers don’t have enough water,
there is still only 1 check in my check book,
I can’t find the remote,
I can’t find my glasses,
and I don’t remember what I did with the car keys.
Then, when I try to figure out why nothing got done today,
I’m really baffled because I know I was busy all the damn day,
and I’m really tired.

I realize this is a serious problem,
and I’ll try to get some help for it,
but first I’ll check my e-mail….

Don’t laugh — if this isn’t you yet, your day is coming!!

I've done nothing today ass I'm feeling really unwell after having my flu and pneumonia jabs on Thursday
It's great not to have to worry that I should be doing something

AGAA4 Sat 24-Oct-20 16:17:23

I have become lazy during these days of lockdown and restrictions because there is always tomorrow.

Doodledog Sat 24-Oct-20 16:16:43

I can very easily do nothing constructive, but I can't just do nothing. Even watching TV I need to be knitting, or faffing about online - I'm very bad at 'just sitting'. I sometimes think we have become over-stimulated, probably since the invention of TV or radio.

My husband says that his grandmother, a farmer's wife who worked really hard, would relax by sitting in her chair twiddling her thumbs. That would drive me insane smile. I suppose I don't need to physically relax in the way she will have done - for me it's more about 'switching off my head'. At the same time, I don't feel that I should always be busy, or even that I should 'earn' downtime - if I want to take time for myself, I do.

Spangler Sat 24-Oct-20 16:09:20

Didn't Bing Crosby sing a song about: "Busy Doing Nothing?"

GrannyLaine Sat 24-Oct-20 16:07:59

I have made it my default mode and embrace it smile

Jane10 Sat 24-Oct-20 16:05:20

It's all too easy for me to just drift through the days. If asked what I've been up to I can't really say!

Puzzler61 Sat 24-Oct-20 15:53:17

Oh dear paddyanne not much rest for you, but I hope MIL is soon back to health. You deserve a bunch of ? too.

Jaxjacky Sat 24-Oct-20 15:51:47

Unfortunately it’s becoming too easy!

BBbevan Sat 24-Oct-20 15:51:31

Very cold and wet here.So apart from a bit of ironing early on, I have read my book.knitted a bit and watched Marie Antoinette on television. Must stir soon to make the dinner

Puzzler61 Sat 24-Oct-20 15:50:36

Yes, I enjoy a day doing nothing and don’t feel guilty.
Until quite recently I used to leave the house to do paid work every day and now I’m retired - so I have the freedom to do nothing sometimes.
I hope you have enjoyed today kircubbin although it wasn’t the day you had planned. ? ☕️
