Quite right, a grammatical slip on my part. If someone were to say: "I'm hungry," you can answer, "so am I."

Used as a conjunction it will connect two clauses. What has become popular with the advent of forums and texting, is to use the word 'so' to start a sentence. That would have got me marked down at school.
"So, what date have you been given to move in?"

So is a useful word for emphasis: "It's a great place to eat, but it's so expensive."

As you may have noticed from the foregoing sentences, I was always taught that 'only' should always be placed after the verb (as in 'should be used only...', rather than before it (as in 'should only be used.."). However, it would seem that I am in the minority on this point.

Whilst I agree with that sentiment, Marydoll, I have to admit to a chuckle caused by some graffiti that I saw at college. Above the loo roll in the gents toilet, someone had written: "Philosophy degrees, please take one."

To me Gransnet has a lively forum of wide ranging topics, it’s no problem to me if others disagree, there are no consequences to arguing on a forum.
Well yes and no. Yes if you are made of sterner stuff but no if verbal hand grenades upset you. I would suggest to anyone who feels aggrieved at what the might perceive as a spiteful of hurtful post, is to ignore it. After all, you can't have an argument in an empty room.

Davidhs, I too have absolutely no problem with people disagreeing, it makes reading threads much more interesting. However, I do have a problem with personal remarks directed at posters.
There is now an undercurrent running through this thread , that some posters are probably unaware of. I will not be drawn into it.

This thread was tootling along quite nicely, until a poster decided to change the mood and killed it dead.

I’ve avoided commenting so far but now the thread has turned to academic achievement I will contribute.
Just because someone has PHD or a Doctorate or a Degree is no guarantee they have an ounce of common sense or capable of logical decisions. Half the population and a good many on Gransnet could give no logical reason for Brexit, plenty of other examples

It's the age of the professors that gets me, grumppa.

I would never devalue a Ph.D., or a D.Phil., but I am constantly amazed at the number of Professors who have put in an appearance since coronavirus reared its ugly head. I suppose with the increase in the number of universities it should not be unexpected, but it still comes as a shock.

Having watched young people in my family slogging over their research to achieve a PhD, I can only say, that I admire their dedication. I also know that many people will, in the immediate future, benefit from the results of their research. It doesn’t stop at the PhD, the door opens to further research. It is a precarious financial situation for these young researchers too.

As someone who work damned hard and was one year short off achieving a PhD, recluctantly abandoned due to chronic ill health, I find your remark offensive.

I am often guilty of derailing threads, so you are mistaken in your statement, about me complaining.
