Hi everyone,
Any hints or tips on how to stay in touch with grandchildren & your family who live miles away? We’ve tried to arrange regular video calls but my DS & DIL don’t have the time.

WhatsApp.
Regular snippets of info, plenty of "chats" and videos.

My DS in NZ has managed to make the trip here every couple of years . He video calls each week and takes me on a tour of their house and I chat briefly to the DC but I have to accept a long distance relationship.

My friend, whose only GC is in Canada, reads her bedtime stories and she visits her several times a year. They are now very close pals.

Unless you are part of their lives from the start and are needed, I think there is always a distance whether you live near or not.
Make sure you arrange visits and send letters and small gifts and take an interest in their lives.

Good luck.

When we lived in America we only had small children. My parents used to write to my daughter.
Getting a letter is really exciting when you are 3!

They sent drawings too with captions... "Here is Grandpa with the big birthday cake he made for me."

"Here I am tripping over in the woods yesterday - silly me, I wasn't looking where Iwas going... oops!"

And little cartoon story strips and rebus...
Many ended with something like "and Granny and Grandps were SO looking forward to seeing you again" with drawings of them being silly -somersaulting, leapfrogging, waving arms excitedly ect.

My 3 year old would "write back" but telling me exactly what she was writing. I'd write that on the back.
I found these when my parents died.
So bitter sweet.

This. 250 miles from ours. I’m alone now and have much more time than they do so I drive down for a couple of days reliably. They come to me for a week every school holiday, all coming up for Christmas, dogs too. So lovely to have them here.

Regularly, not reliably, weird predictive text.
