Very good actor, always deadpan!

Enjoyed him in The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin" and the series with Judi Dench.

He worked with her in 'Mrs Brown' too when she played Queen Victoria.

I'd forgotten that, Mick.

Apart from TV comedies he played with Judy Dench in the bond films as well.

"The naughtiest man I ever had the pleasure of working with"

Judi Dench.

lugubrious describes him so well.

RIP Geoffrey, you gave so much pleasure and enjoyment to so many.

I was just about to say how much I liked his face.

Smileless2012 Fri 06-Nov-20 19:52:29

I was really upset when I heard and surprised that he was 93.

Loved him in 'Butterflies', his 'miserable' face was adorable. I told Mr. S. when we first got married he'd be just like that character when he got older and I was right grin.

I loved Butterflies. Geoffrey Palmer’s bumbling character didn’t understand his daydreamer wife at all and Wendy Craig was no domestic goddess - her efforts to make meals for her family were hilarious and nearly always turned out inedible.
The “daily” help, a cleaning lady, had some brilliant lines too.
Many stay at home mums in the 70’s and 80’s must have identified with Ria Parkinson.
Geoffrey had a face that reminded me of a loyal Spaniel (not meant unkindly). R.I.P.

I was so sorry to hear of his death today; I liked him very much. His deadpan, lugubrious delivery was wonderful and he seems to have been much loved and respected by those who worked with him.

I loved Butterflies!
Whenever I see neighbours swapping their cars around on the drive I still think of that gentle comedy programme.

LauraNorder Fri 06-Nov-20 19:13:27

Judi Dench has described him, with a twinkle in her eye, as the naughtiest man she ever worked with. I like him even more now

threexnanny Fri 06-Nov-20 19:04:22

Very sad news. RIP

Luckygirl Fri 06-Nov-20 15:29:06

I am sorry to hear this - he was a super actor. I love Butterflies.

Georgesgran Fri 06-Nov-20 15:23:05

Seemed a nice chap on and off screen.
Next door neighbours have 6 cars, so it’s like Butterflies every morning as they shuffle their cars around.

BlueBelle Fri 06-Nov-20 15:19:39

Nice actor but 93 is a very good age so a fitting end to a long and useful life

J52 Fri 06-Nov-20 15:15:46

How sad, I really loved him in Butterflies along with Wendy Craig. Later when I had two teenage boys, I often used to think back to the programmes and chuckle.

LauraNorder Fri 06-Nov-20 14:51:20

Very sad, he did come across as a gentleman and I loved him best in As Time Goes By. RIP

Chardy Fri 06-Nov-20 14:41:55

Very sorry to hear that.

Looking at his work on IMDb is a delightful trip down memory lane.

I always enjoyed watching him in As Time Goes By and Butterflies.

crazyH Fri 06-Nov-20 14:16:57

Great actor ..

HillyN Fri 06-Nov-20 14:15:57

My DH tells me he was 93. I too enjoyed every film or programme he was in, especially As Time Goes By.

Iam64 Fri 06-Nov-20 14:11:14

I enjoyed everything he was in. He always seemed a lovely man as well as being a great actor. I loved Reggie Perrin and thanks for the reminder of "bit of a cock up on the catering front" Jane10.

Charleygirl5 Fri 06-Nov-20 14:10:04

A lovely man- I wonder how old he was?

Jane10 Fri 06-Nov-20 14:09:58

Aw. I really liked him. His 'bit of a cock up on the catering front' in Reggie Perrin became a family watchword for us!
I never saw him in a film or TV programme that I didn't like.

B9exchange Fri 06-Nov-20 14:08:09

Lovely man, very supportive of his local hospice, though much more serious in real life!
