After 10 years of fund raising, a statue of Mary Wollstonecraft has been created.

The white cape is made of two face masks - showing how tiny the figure is.

IMO it’s rather ugly.
And is it me, or is the pubic hair a mite overdone?

I can’t help wondering what MW would think!

I didn’t realise it was so small and she has a rather bulbous ‘area’
no not appropriate I too like the runner up much better so who are the people who voted for it ? All middle aged men ?

I have an awful suspicion that they were a bunch of people full of wokeness.
Lucy ???

I don’t suppose Maggi Hambling, whose paintings I like a great deal, gives a toss what anyone thinks of her sculpture but I do think she’s missed the mark with this one, naked or not. The proportions are very peculiar. I remember seeing the sculpture by Mark Quinn, ‘Alison Lapper Pregnant’ on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square and thinking how beautiful that was. No contest.

I loved the Alison Lapper Pregnant - I was working regularly in London at that time and loved nothing more than being stuck in a traffic jam in Trafalgar Square so I could feast my eyes on it. It was such a powerful statement of women and disability. I wonder where it is now?

A pile of silverised landfill topped with a naked Barbie doll.
Looks like Maggi Hambling left it too late and just threw something together last Tuesday.

I should have said our local heroine. Her final letter to her parents has just been given to the Cathedral in Norwich.

Here is the ‘statue’ of our heroine.
Says it all really

I think her pubic hair looks like a scouring pad ?

Greyduster Wed 11-Nov-20 15:21:46

Suziewoozie we are very proud here of our ‘Women of Steel’.

Everyone is entitled to a hobby Lucca grin

Sparklefizz Wed 11-Nov-20 14:34:34

Actually I thought the statue looked like a mini Maggi Hambling perched on the top.

Lucca Wed 11-Nov-20 13:12:35

Galaxy I enjoy your posts but I was slightly alarmed this morning to read that you are looking forward to a statue of Churchill with his penis out. ??
I agree with the general opinion on here I much preferred the alternative one Suziewoozie showed.

Galaxy Wed 11-Nov-20 13:00:57

I am quite reasonable online generally. I just feel I missed that basic step somewhere though. Like being able to cook but not being able to make an omelette!

Thanks suzie, I am deeply embarrassed at my inability to do links.

There’s plenty of us who will give you online lessons - just ask

Those sculptures by Martin Jennings are wonderful. If only he'd done Mary Wolstencroft.

suziewoozie Wed 11-Nov-20 11:39:49

I love his Women of Steel - that’s how to do a statue FOR someone.

FarNorth Wed 11-Nov-20 11:39:25

The actual figure is tiny.

Oh he did Larkn and Betjeman. Love those two and realise they have a lot in common.

suziewoozie Wed 11-Nov-20 11:08:58

Here’s the comparison
