Greyduster
I don’t suppose Maggi Hambling, whose paintings I like a great deal, gives a toss what anyone thinks of her sculpture but I do think she’s missed the mark with this one, naked or not. The proportions are very peculiar. I remember seeing the sculpture by Mark Quinn, ‘Alison Lapper Pregnant’ on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square and thinking how beautiful that was. No contest.
I loved the Alison Lapper Pregnant - I was working regularly in London at that time and loved nothing more than being stuck in a traffic jam in Trafalgar Square so I could feast my eyes on it. It was such a powerful statement of women and disability. I wonder where it is now?
