Statues of Famous Women

There was talk at some point of having a statue of Margaret Thatcher in her home town of Grantham. No doubt there were objections from some quarters.

The bronze one in the Houses of Parliament is a lovely tribute to her though.

Last one, I promise. Well for a while anyway .

"Fisher Jessie" in Peterhead. She is modelled on the mother of a local poet and represents all the women who worked in the fishing industry. The sculptor was Andy Scott, who later created The Kelpies

Memorial to the weavers of Dundee, featuring the words of Mary Brooksbank. "They fairly mak' ye work for your 10 an 9"

Really loved the statue of Boudicca Queen of the Iceni, complete with chariot and horse, which I often passed when I was working in London. An original trail blazer for "The Only Way is Essex" as many Romans residing in Colchester found out!

Alice Hawkins, a suffragette who’s statue is in the centre of Leicester.
Alice was a shoe and boot factory worker . She joined the suffragettes in London and imprisoned for her beliefs.

Mary Barbour statue in Govan. She led a rent strike there in 1915 after landlords raised the rents for workers. The protests forced a change in the law with the introduction of the Rent Restrictions Act.

Emily Wilding Davison in Carlisle Park, Morpeth. Her family came from Morpeth and her widowed mother owned a confectioners in nearby LongHorsley. She is buried in the family grave.
