Following on from the controversy over the Mary Wollstonecraft can you think of any statues of famous women that you like or approve of?

There are a few of Mrs. Pankhurst but my favourite is this one of Lucy Maud Montgomery with her Cavendish cats. It’s in Montgomery Park in Canada.

There was talk at some point of having a statue of Margaret Thatcher in her home town of Grantham. No doubt there were objections from some quarters.

The bronze one in the Houses of Parliament is a lovely tribute to her though.

Last one, I promise. Well for a while anyway smile.

"Fisher Jessie" in Peterhead. She is modelled on the mother of a local poet and represents all the women who worked in the fishing industry. The sculptor was Andy Scott, who later created The Kelpies

Really loved the statue of Boudicca Queen of the Iceni, complete with chariot and horse, which I often passed when I was working in London. An original trail blazer for "The Only Way is Essex" as many Romans residing in Colchester found out!

Sorry no link but easy to Google

Looking forward to anyone sharing their ‘favourite statue of a man’ interest on another thread but meanwhile enthused by this thread; thank you!

I searched for more statues and discovered new favourites Louisa Blake (surgeon) and Margaret MacDonald (educator) at this page on London lookup.london/international-womens-day-london-statues/

Alice Hawkins, a suffragette who’s statue is in the centre of Leicester.
Alice was a shoe and boot factory worker . She joined the suffragettes in London and imprisoned for her beliefs.

quizqueen have you seen/read the thread about the Mary Wollstonecraft statue? That is the context of this thread.

Please feel free to start another thread about all statues, regardless of sex, gender or species, if that’s something you want to discuss.

I thought everyone on here was in favour of equality so why a thread about statues celebrating just women, rather than anyone who has done something to be admired!!!

Because there are so few.

trisher Wed 11-Nov-20 12:21:43

quizqueenbecause there are so few and they should be more widely known. Start one about men if you are so concerned with equality.

Because a controversial statue of Mary Wollstenecraft is under discussion on another thread. I think people here are demonstrating good statues celebrating women,

Some wonderful statues here, thank you all!

I don’t know who the model was for this statue in Blackburn, but I love it. I believe it’s called “Grandmother and Child”.

I love that Mary Barbour statue Alegrias - thank you. ?

Alegrias2 Wed 11-Nov-20 11:38:36

Mary Barbour statue in Govan. She led a rent strike there in 1915 after landlords raised the rents for workers. The protests forced a change in the law with the introduction of the Rent Restrictions Act.
