I have lived here for 1 year and 3 days and I’ve just cleaned the inside of my kitchen windows for the first time!
I know I’m a slattern but they are so hard to reach but I finally managed with the aid of a swiffer mop. I’m now on a window cleaning rampage, if you stand still near me I’ll give you a good rub down too.
Is there anything that you have suddenly found the urge to do?

I was once told, by a slim lady, 'never employ a fat woman to clean, they do not get into the corners!!!'

I have never employed a cleaner, just wish for one, but I would have to clean first!

Nuff said.

WOODMOUSE49, I'm a great fan of the 'leave it til it's desperate' style of cleaning. It's so rewarding when you see the results. My friend does the 'keep it clean and tidy' thing so it's never any different.

My SIL is a cleaning freak and her house is like a show house. Me I'm different, I clean when I have to (I do have a hubby with dementia and I'm his carer) so I probably use that as an excuse not to clean, but some days I just can't be bothered. When she comes to my house, which isn't all that often she always refused a cup of tea and sits there with her nose in the air, I bet she's thinking scruffy c*w but if she wants to swap roles that's fine.

SueD, sorry to read of your misfortune after cleaning. I would normally say 'that'll teach you' but you certainly didn't deserve that. Ouch! Not that I need an excuse, but your experience will come into my mind any time I feel a ridiculous urge and I'll calm down.

Lexisgranny

I used to clean the bathroom with great vigour if something had annoyed me, but my dh bought a steamer which he loves using each week in the bathroom and kitchen, so I have to simmer instead.

Lexisgranny, don't worry those steam cleaners don't last long. I've had three now and they all stop steaming after a few months so you'll be able to go back to venting your anger on the bathroom,

Dust If You Must
by Rose Milligan
Dust if you must, but wouldn't it be better
To paint a picture, or write a letter,
Bake a cake, or plant a seed;
Ponder the difference between want and need?

Dust if you must, but there's not much time,
With rivers to swim, and mountains to climb;
Music to hear, and books to read;
Friends to cherish, and life to lead.

Dust if you must, but the world's out there
With the sun in your eyes, and the wind in your hair;
A flutter of snow, a shower of rain,
This day will not come around again.

The difference between me and my sil. My friend phones just as I am about to set to with housework. "Do you want to go shopping and have lunch?" I'm ready before the phone has clicked off. Me phoning sil. "Do you fancy a trip out, get some lunch" "Oh no, can't do that, I'm just about to the clean the kitchen". She goes through the house everyday quick vac and dust. Me? When the mood takes me. Which one is the slattern? ?

In lockdown I found a great ways to avoid housework.

OH finds things on the net and once he's bought them they are his toys so he uses them :-) works for me.

latest is that Yellow window cleaning squeegee tool. Previously cordless vacuum cleaner. Window cleaner arrived on Saturday now most of the windows are clean, just a couple more to go.

Now I have to find a gadget for cleaning the oven for him to find on the net and all the jobs I don't like will taken over :-)

I like the sound of the robot vacuum though, not sure I can justify it after the new cordless one but who knows.

The coat boot cupboard which has a basket full of plastic bags. Houses the dyson,, steam mop, bag with dusters and polish in. Sorted out the old trainers on the shoe rack and threw a old pair away.

I feel so reassured by you all. I thought I was the only one who only dusts the tv when Dh can’t see the picture properly

gulligranny Mon 16-Nov-20 15:33:03

I am absolutely brilliant at buying cleaning products. Polish, oven cleaner, shower spray etc. etc., you name it, I've got it.

Don't actually USE it though.

I have visions of us all taking everything we own into the shower to clean,wonderful laugh to start the day.

Indigoblue Mon 16-Nov-20 16:32:40

Dust if you must. What a delightful poem.

Newatthis Mon 16-Nov-20 16:33:07

I really don't like housework but nor do I like a dirty house. So, on days when I have to do things I get in a really bad mood. If I won the lottery I would have a live in cleaner so I could do all the things I want to do and leave the housework to them.

GrandmaCornwall Mon 16-Nov-20 20:59:43

My grandson Teddy renamed all cobwebs Teddy webs so I can’t clear them away can I ?

starlily106 Mon 16-Nov-20 23:24:45

Hurrah to all you lovely ladies. I'm so glad that I am not the only one that thinks that things should be done and then forgets about doing them.

starlily106 Mon 16-Nov-20 23:36:51

I have a cousin who lives down south, and she has a house so clean it's uncomfortable to be in it. We once called to stay overnight before travelling on to our holiday place. My son was peeling after being sunburnt and she got the vacuum cleaner out twice in an hour to pick up the bits that came off him. She cleans the windows every week, washes dirty clothes each day, and plumps up all the cushions if you move out of a seat, makes you frightened to move.

My mum used to polish the hand soap in the bathroom by running it under the cold tap till it was smooth and shiny!

SueEH Tue 17-Nov-20 08:15:06

My granny's old adage that "A man on a flying horse wouldn't notice" is the most over used phrase in my household wink

Shropshirelass Tue 17-Nov-20 09:00:46

My old Aunt used to say ‘the dust will still be there tomorrow’. My DH loves doing housework, so I let him!

hereshoping Tue 17-Nov-20 09:02:56

A couple of weeks ago I cleaned the whole kitchen down from ceiling to floor because my husband was keen to redecorate before Christmas. Don't know if my back pain flare up was a result of this, I had to spend a few days in bed until it eased.
However he seems to have gone off the boil now and isn't interested. Grrr!

Wheniwasyourage Tue 17-Nov-20 12:25:39

Unfortunately I have one knee which objects strongly to being knelt on on a hard floor, so it has to be the mop. Occasionally, as it isn't good for the mop to be worn out.

The other use for spiders' webs, of course, is as an ecologically sound fly paper.

Wheniwasyourage Tue 17-Nov-20 12:28:37

That was a reply to inishowen from 16/11 at 11:52:42, but I was obviously too disorganised (or lazy) to get on to page 2.

Fernbergien Tue 17-Nov-20 12:37:28

A good thread. I feel so much better and realise house not too bad at all
