The use of the word coloured is dangerous here is a comment from one academic.
“ To be described as “people of colour” feels like my identity is being tamed and made more palatable. My ethnicity and culture mean too much to me to hide them under the guise of “people of colour”.
Apparently PC language is moving on again, BAME is now the safest term to use.

Unbelievable
(94 Posts)I read today that people are threatening to boycott Sainsbury’s because their Christmas advert uses a black family
Whattttttt ! is this what our country is about now
I am a product of having worked overseas, in the USA for many years where I was required to use the term 'people of colour because that was a productoftheir diversity legislature. Sometimes trip over my words
As Algrias2 says, people of colour is good, 'coloured people' is not. It really isn't too difficult. Clarke didn't just trip over his words on this occasion. He made sweeping and incorrect judgements about the reasons people of Asian background are under represented in football. He made sweeping and ignorant comment about the representation of black players in football. I wonder why he thinks so many black players doesn't equate to more representation of black former players a coaches or as head of the FA.
And there were other issues in his submission.
People of colour" is fine.
"Coloured people" is not
There you go, simple rule to work to.
This. Is the press report I was referring to, it’s the word “Coloured” that is taboo
A few minutes later, DCMS committee member Kevin Brennan MP asked Clarke if he wished to withdraw the use of the word “coloured”.
“If I said it, I deeply apologise,” said Clarke, 63, after being prompted.
“I am a product of having worked overseas, in the USA for many years, where I was required to use the term ‘people of colour’ because that was a product of their diversity legislature. Sometimes I trip over my words.”
So what did he say.
Are we correct referring to “People of Colour” or not

David’s at 15.59 you say in your post ‘blacks’ as a description of black people. I find that to be offensive and racist.
It would have been better if I had written “Black People”.
I could have made the sin of saying “People of Colour” as Sally Nugent did in the Lewis Hamilton interview. The FA boss had to resign for that slip but I guess Sally is safe.
As ever David you got it wrong about the FA boss - would you like me to explain it to you because I would actually get it right (despite being a girl) . Don’t know about the SN issue but you probably got that wrong as well on the balance of probabilities
That's not what he said David but dont let the facts get in the way.

I also believe there are quotas for appearances in the media. In fact in articles I've read, I've seen advertising companies admit that they over compensate with their character choices to avoid any criticism. We now also have a preponderance of non white, non male comedians/guests on panel shows etc. many of whom are not remotely funny, witty or as interesting in the slightest as their traditional white male counterpoints. They are there to fill quotas and for shows and companies to be seen to be PC/woke so that means quality is not the main criteria any longer. All jobs should be given on merit alone.
You mean on merit like contracts are given to friends of Tory MPs and jobs given to wives of Tory MPs without any selection process? And lordships given to someone because he’s the PMs brother? That sort of merit? Hummmmm

If I heard someone referring to me and others as whites should I then be outraged that they missed off the word ‘people’ ?
I can honestly say it wouldn’t bother me in the slightest but obviously some others would take offence.
I don't know that you 'should' feel anything - feelings aren't really like that - but I think that it's not too much to expect that you should understand why others might find it offensive, and you did ask.
I would also question why the speaker in your scenario was describing you as such. What is 'a white' if not someone who is being perceived as different from people who are not white. It so rarely matters if there is not to be discrimination of some kind. If there isn't, why would anyone need to know?

We shouldn't even be discussing colour at all ! Why ? What does it matter ? Which brings me back to what I said earlier that too much attention is given to people in general.
It drives me mad when I hear that old chestnut sarnia ‘all lives matter’ we know that but white lives have always mattered don’t you get it ?

Davidhs also said ‘whites’ Bluebellwould
Do you also find that racist and offensive?
Bluebellwould can speak for herself, of course; but I find it offensive, just as I find calling people 'cripples', or 'gays', or whatever offensive. It is choosing one aspect about someone, and defining them in terms of that that is offensive. I am not 'a white' - I am 'a white woman', and my family are 'white people'.
Using skin colour as a noun is deeply offensive, IMO, whatever colour that skin happens to be.
I wouldn't mind but we're all Heinz 57's so what the problem is I don't know.
It's the fault of the media and those daft enough to be brainwashed by them. Anything to cause friction---the press love it ! Unfortunately so do millions of others. You've only to look at the violence that's abound.
The news showed that shopworkers are having a raw deal from the " free country " lunatics who are causing mayhem because they refuse to abide by the rules so start smashing the shops up when told to wear masks. Violence at the drop of a hat. This is an intolerant country in more ways than one.
The more I see people, the more I love my cats.
JenniferEccles- do you genuinely not understand that 'blacks' has links to slavery and that 'whites' ran the world to the detriment of 'blacks' ?
I'm as irritated as the next person by the ridiculous use of phrases like 'political correctness' or words like 'woke'
Wasn't it sainsbury's who put out the bolshy statement telling people they were welcome to go elsewhere and they wouldn't be missed?
This was in advance of their blm drive.
I’m tired of it all if I dare to say it. We ALL matter. There’s good and bad people. That’s it. Nothing else comes into it.
Davidhs also said ‘whites’ Bluebellwould

If this is true (where was it reported?) I suspect it’s only a tiny minority who are protesting.
I am as irritated as the next person with political correctness but I don’t think this comes under that category.
What next person is that JE ? think the phrase needs further defining as in ‘ the next right wing person’
