It's true Galaxy---for want of a proper way of putting it. There'd be no self-consciousness among anyone if people got on with their own business instead of being aware of others.

It is unbelievable. Is it really true or fake news?

annsixty Thu 19-Nov-20 14:16:15

Last year Aldi featured a parsnip in their ads.
I know because I bought one of the toys for my D’s dog.☺️

ginny Thu 19-Nov-20 14:12:13

Maw that made me ?

Doodledog Thu 19-Nov-20 14:11:32

A quota system? I would love to see verifiable evidence that such a thing exists. Positive discrimination only happens in certain regulated areas and would not have been in place when staffing a space launch!

What I do see is that as soon as the long-standing white, male, middle-class hegemony is challenged even slightly there is an outcry from those who feel threatened at the idea that they will have to compete on a meritocratic level instead of being the automatic default choice.

None of this is relevant to the Sainsbury's ad, however. All that is doing is using a happy, functional family to create a feeling of goodwill at Christmas in the hope that shoppers will associate that feeling with their supermarket. The colour of that family's skin is irrelevant to the message, and anyone who feels threatened by it (or aggrieved, or resentful) should perhaps take a step back and wonder why.

Have the complainers also commented that the Aldi Christmas ad features a family of carrots ?
Are parsnips aggrieved?

Galaxy Thu 19-Nov-20 13:58:28

The complainers summerlove.
Too much attention is given to people in general. That made me laugh Ellan.

Sparkling Thu 19-Nov-20 13:55:27

I’ve not heard that, it’s a daft rumour. Who would be so silly.

Iam64 Thu 19-Nov-20 13:53:24

Davidhs - the attitude displayed in your post above confirms exactly why "positive discrimination' and quota systems are needed

Lawrence Fox has lost the plot totally. He has been dropped by his agent as well.,

BlueBelle Thu 19-Nov-20 13:46:50

Why shouldn’t the space craft have a multi ethnic crew though David
Why would people feel aggrieved I don’t understand ?

EllanVannin Thu 19-Nov-20 13:45:21

When are people allowed to get on with their own lives without interference from others ? Jeeze, take no notice !!

EllanVannin Thu 19-Nov-20 13:43:39

Honestly, some people badly need something to do----first of all by minding their own business and look at themselves instead of being judge and jury towards others.

Too much attention is given to people in general.

Davidhs Thu 19-Nov-20 13:34:13

You may have noticed that there is a quota system not just for adverts, even the latest Space launch had a multi ethnic crew, including the first black female astronaut, which was heralded as a big achievement.
Wether there was any element of positive discrimination in that case I have no idea, but there is a lot in other areas, this is always going to cause resentment, someone is always going to feel aggrieved.

Doodledog Thu 19-Nov-20 13:07:19

That idiot Laurence Fox said he would boycott Sainsburys when they said they supported Black History Month (there is a thread on here somewhere). This is happening on the back of that, I think.

It is profoundly depressing. Are these people so dim that they can't see that there is no such thing as a typical Sainsbury's shopper, or a typical British family, for that matter?

Should all adverts be aimed at 'typical' people anyway? Most of them are aspirational, and feature young people in enormous white kitchens with no mess anywhere. Should we complain about those as they don't represent our (well 'my', anyway!) norm?

Summerlove Thu 19-Nov-20 13:06:38

Galaxy

I dont really understand what's going on with sainsbury I have read some of the racist comments and also many complaining about the fact that the dad in the advert has died, what is wrong with these people?

Which people?
The complainers or the marketing people?

Coolgran65 Thu 19-Nov-20 12:56:53

I am speechless !!
I think that sometimes people look for something to be offended about.

I read today that people are threatening to boycott Sainsbury’s because their Christmas advert uses a black family
Whattttttt ! is this what our country is about now
