Excellent Callistemon - I trust that you'll be joining me on the maracas later!

Callistemon Fri 27-Nov-20 11:19:07

I like a bit of Manly Barrilow.

It's just as well we all have different tastes grin

Both "Killing Me Softly" and "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" used to drive me up a tree!

FannyCornforth Fri 27-Nov-20 09:06:46

LadyBella

And what's that awful one that goes... "Driving home for Christmas"? Yuck.

That'll be 'Driving Home for Christmas' grin
Chris Rea.

Simply having a Wonderful Christmas Time - played endlessly in our local supermarket at this time of year. I can’t stand it!

DanniRae Fri 27-Nov-20 07:38:15

Oh LadyBella when my daughter lived a long way from us I used to love "Driving Home for Christmas" because it reminded me that she would indeed be "Driving Home for Christmas" smile
Happily she is just a little way from us now........as is my son who also lived a long way from us back then. smile

Oh dear, I love Mr Tambourine Man, Fairytale ofNew York, Mac the Knife and Hallelujah. And Every Step You Take, no hope for me I guess.

Trying hard to recall a song I dislike. My Way, Lady in Red, Imagine.

Some songs disliked by others are my favourites - Dance the Night Away by the Mavericks always gets me on the dance floor; Nilsson's Without You is a classic as is Hey Jude and Imagine!
Absolutely detest Empire State of Mind by Alicia Keys - she absolutely screams some of the Lyrics - I always rush to turn it off the radio, it just sets my teeth on edge. Don't like Vera Lynn's We'll Meet Again (sorry!) the tune is just so miserable, though the words aren't. Don't like anything by Abba or The Carpenters either. Also detest with a passion any Rap songs - lyrics are meant to be sung!

I hate that stalking one by the Police. The one that goes I'll be watching you

Oh yes, I was trying to remember that one then got distracted.

If hear it, I think 'Creepy'
I don't like Gordon Sumner anyway.

Callistemon

(I agree Elton John is overrated too)!

Nooooo!

“Daniel” takes me instantly back to a summer in early 70’s possibly 1972, when I fell in love ......

Aww, I love that too Lucca.
I have a son Daniel. It reminds me of him although he didn't arrive until 1994.
So does Danny boy.

sharon103 Thu 26-Nov-20 14:32:03

I love Fairytale of New York. It's my favourite Christmas song.

I don't like, Chirpy Chirpy Cheep cheep. Middle of the Road
Brown Girl in the ring by Boney M
Mouldy old dough Lieutenant pigeon
Welcome home, Peters and Lee
Shout, Lulu
Seasons in the Sun, Terry Jacks
Fire, Arthur Brown.

'Jolene' by Dolly Parton.

Nannarose Thu 26-Nov-20 14:10:45

FannyCornforth - I shouldn't perhaps have called an individual 'daft', but what the singer seems to be saying is that whatever he wants to do, this woman enables him to do it, unquestioningly (whilst looking beautiful).
You ask if I can imagine having a song like that written for me - no I can't imagine it at all!
By 'wow' do you mean that you would have liked to be the subject of the song?
Why I like this thread so much is how we all read different things into these songs!
But you do raise an interesting question - maybe for another thread - about the song you would have liked written about you.

I love Mr tambourine man, too.
It has a lovely feel to it.

You didn't spend a summer hearing it on a loop with a voiceover grin.

It is an earworm though.

FannyCornforth Thu 26-Nov-20 12:58:56

Nannarose 'the daft woman' Clapton wrote Wonderful Tonight about was Patti Boyd.
He also wrote Layla for her when she was married to George Harrison.
Can you imagine having a song like that written for you? Wow.

3nanny6 Thu 26-Nov-20 12:37:45

Those terrible songs by the Cheeky Girls one of them called
we are the cheeky girls. what a load of rubbish.
Fairytale of New York the Pogues.
Crazy Horses by the Osmonds
My Boy Lollipop by Millie I hate that song.

MissAdventure Thu 26-Nov-20 12:16:42

Nannarose Thu 26-Nov-20 12:14:29

I love Mr. Tambourine Man - when my son was in his teens, he got a picture of a surfer, and wrote out the words 'to dance beneath a diamond sky......' on top of it, as a gift to me, which I treasure.

And Seasons in the Sun is a really interesting song - badly translated from the original which I love.

And this is why I'm loving this thread!

A musician said to me that he thinks that the divide is between those who love the words and those who love the music. Not sure if he's right, but I do know people who tell me they like a song, but if I say that I don't like the words they say 'oh, I never listen to them'. That's why I have mixed feelings about Mack the Knife - great tune, very evocative - about a serial (or contract) killer! Fine in context, but otherwise ?!
