I can’t bear “Cry me a river “

Callistemon Thu 26-Nov-20 12:02:59

And I don't like Imagine either (how hard did you have to try to imagine no possessions John?)
'Imagine'
Thank goodness, Nannarose and FannyC, I thought I'd get shredded if I said that grin

most things by Barry White.
Me neither although they're ok sung by someone else

Hey Mr Tambourine Man played endlessly by a boyfriend one summer, he was very nice but as boring as the song.

I'm enjoying this thread.

Remember Harry Nilsson ‘I can’t live if living is without you’? I loathe that dirge. Thankfully it’s not played too often these days.

(I agree Elton John is overrated too)!

Nooooo!

Have I the Right by The Honeycombs. It was a hit record at a time when my mum and dad took me on holiday. It was the first holiday we’d had for a long time as we were really poor and I got it in my head that I must be seriously ill with something and they’d taken me on what would be m last ever holiday. Yes, even at the age of 20 I was a hypochondriac. It was only a caravan in Evesham: not even the seaside. The song totally depresses me!

Callistemon Thu 26-Nov-20 11:52:47

Oh yes, the song on the current John Lewis ad.
It's awful, isn't it, pollyperkins.
But I think we'll be outnumbered.

Callistemon Thu 26-Nov-20 11:51:40

Every time you go away
You take a piece of me with you

Which always reminds me of the DC discussing body parts and which bit she'd taken that time.

I'm with joannap on We'll meet again. Also can't stand Hallelujah - too many awful screechy, warbly versions trying to sound soulful.

MissAdventure Thu 26-Nov-20 09:43:54

Seasons in the sun by Terry Jacks.

pollyperkins Thu 26-Nov-20 08:34:06

Well I either like or feel neutral about most of the songs mentioned. The only ones I agree with are Fairy tale on New York and hallelujah.
I dislike very maudlin sentimental songs especially sung in a poppy way with an American accent but can’t think of any examples. Oh yes, the song on the current John Lewis ad.

Someone mentioned 'Sugar Sugar' by the Archies - I was thinking goodness haven't heard that for about 40 years, then blow me it was blaring out in the Coop!

The most dreary song ever must be 'I'm not in luuuurve' by 10cc, it goes on forever!

boheminan Thu 26-Nov-20 08:30:06

I can't stand 'I Left My Heart in San Francisco'. To me it's so smug...

MissAdventure Thu 26-Nov-20 08:26:44

All I want for christmas is you. (Mariah Carey)

Lazyriver Thu 26-Nov-20 08:21:09

Surely better music out there!

Lazyriver Thu 26-Nov-20 08:20:34

So here it is Merry Christmas, and all the standard rubbish they dig out every year.
That Mariah Carey thing which is too pukey to mention that pumps out at the supermarket.
Surely

Mull of Kintyre. I once donated money to Capital Radio in the hope that they wouldn’t play it.

Dwmxwg Thu 26-Nov-20 06:01:47

Tie a yellow ribbon and I just called to say I love you, radio goes off if they come on

Mac the Knife comes from the Threepenny Opera (Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht), which, in turn, is derived from The Beggar's Opera.

Nights in White Satin and A Whiter Shade of Pale.

Katy Perry’s “Firework” - the lyrics are complete rubbish!

It's about Russell Brand (snigger)

FannyCornforth Thu 26-Nov-20 01:55:36

MissA I'm totally with you.
Mack the Knife is a brilliant song.
And that Push It sh**e is an absolutely vile abomination.
I've just looked it up and it's by some cretins called 'Inner Circle'.

MissAdventure Wed 25-Nov-20 23:20:09

Oh, I like that one! smile
Mack the knife, though, I've never had any idea what they're singing about.

Lucretzia Wed 25-Nov-20 23:17:52

Young Hearts, Run Free was another I didn't like

I had a boyfriend who loved it

He had to go

MissAdventure Wed 25-Nov-20 23:16:20

I think it's Whitney Houston.
I believe the children are our future.. blah blah....

skunkhair63 Wed 25-Nov-20 23:13:38

Katy Perry’s “Firework” - the lyrics are complete rubbish!

Lucretzia Wed 25-Nov-20 23:12:57

Ah, YMCA by The Village People

That brings back memories of my lovely Mum

She just adored it. Would leap to the dance floor when it played. Whirled around the kitchen when it was on the radio!

We were sat with her at her end of life and when I played that song, she managed to nod her head and clap her hands., and smile.

Her last smile smile
