Grease....... not woke enough!

I watched Grease with my GD6, she was captivated, the story mostly went over her head but the clothes, music and dancing she adored.

Today I read there were many complaints as it is apparently homophobic, slut shaming, rapey and should never be televised again!
Oh also there are no black or mixed race actors in the film.

Have we gone too far?

Lots of people of all ages like 'The Inbetweeners' and that is VERY near the knuckle.

Love Grease. If you are offended by it, don't watch it.

MissAdventure Sun 03-Jan-21 17:16:34

Perhaps we could just have a warning that comes on automatically when the tv is switched on.
It could tell us that we may well end up seeing people, doing things people do.

Excellent MissAdventure and including the news and adverts

Galaxy Sun 03-Jan-21 17:22:29

But you are all currently being offended by people being offendedgrin

Ilovecheese Sun 03-Jan-21 17:32:23

I watched the documentary about the last days of Anne Boleyn, and had to confirm that I was over 16 before I could watch it.

Great suggestion, MissAdventure!

Antonia, I agree with you wholeheartedly. You can’t go back and try to make things fit in with now. I’m fed up with getting “wokism” shoved in my face every time I put on the TV. Minorities seem to rule, but if they don’t like mainstream entertainment then they shouldn’t watch it. They could always set up their own tv network and those of us that love Grease and things like it could avoid woke tv.

Who are the 'minorities' who should set up their own tv network?
Where is all this 'woke' tv?

MissAdventure Sun 03-Jan-21 17:52:05

I'm not offended by people being offended.
They can be whatever they like.

I love Grease, and both my children watched it at a young age. They were not worried about the words in the songs and they enjoyed the dancing. No way was I going to chat to them about how a boy treats a girl.
Grease in no way influenced my adult childrens lives , they just watched for the pure entertainment value. People are really over thinking things these days.

Galaxy Sun 03-Jan-21 18:32:46

I talked to my children about boys and girls all the time.

Galaxy Sun 03-Jan-21 18:33:07

They seen to have survived the experience.

Our friends child was in Inbetweeners and they often had to distract their Gran at certain parts of the episodes.

I loved both films - Saturday Night Fever, and Grease. To those who find them offensive ........ best not to give my opinion in print.
What did surprise me though was that the international school in Kuwait where our eldest son and DiL worked up to 2 years ago put on Grease as their annual show a few years ago. Maybe because the school has American funding?

It's not the sort of thing you'd want your nan to watch.wink

I loved Grease and watched it with both DDs and we enjoyed singing the sings long after watching it.

Whatever lyrics in the songs, completely went over their heads. No damage done and we had fun.

It was a film of its time. Much more worrying times now as parents have to monitor whatever unwanted information can be served up to their children on line.

Iam64. I enjoyed the new David Copperfield, Dev Patel is brilliant as were the rest of the cast
I'm sure Dev Patel played the role very well. My point was that for David Copperfield to be Asian, it follows that he must have had Asian parents. But he didn't. Dora was a vapid, tremulous and shallow creature and definitely English.
I have no objection to newly made programmes reflecting today's society, and I think it's good that children are made aware of, and accept diversity. What I do not like are the new renditions of classics, revamped to suit today's tastes.
Another example is the 'Malory Towers' series, in which Darrell is dyslexic, Jean is facially disfigured and Miss Potts is black. No girl is ever threatened with a spanking, and instead, 'scoldings' are dished out making a complete nonsense of the original stories.
We shouldn't be trying to rewrite history, however much we might disagree with it.
Rant finished now.

Antonia Sun 03-Jan-21 21:42:30

I didn't mean to imply that 'Malory Towers' is a classic!

Ooh, I think it is, Antonia ;-)

Loved those books

Antonia Sun 03-Jan-21 22:14:09

Oh, ok, go on then, Lucretzia!! I loved them too.

dustyangel Sun 03-Jan-21 22:17:30

DD1 loved Grease the film and music so much that her 18th Birthday present was tickets for her and best friend to the West End show. It wasn’t until some years later playing the music in her car that she realised that some of the words weren’t really suitable for her two year old daughter to be singing along to. grin

I don't want to censor it. I do think a warning might be good and anyone who allowed their child to watch it should be prepared to have a discussion about boy's and girl's attitudes to sex and how things have changed.

A warning to watch Grease? ????I’ve heard it all now. Absolutely ridiculous.

blondenana Sun 03-Jan-21 22:32:07

I love grease, i watch it every time it is on TV
Definitely things have gone too far, ridiculous wanting it to be banned

Ilovecheese

I watched the documentary about the last days of Anne Boleyn, and had to confirm that I was over 16 before I could watch it.

Did you lie? grin

When I've had to do that I thought 'who would know, who is checking up?'
