Grease....... not woke enough!

I watched Grease with my GD6, she was captivated, the story mostly went over her head but the clothes, music and dancing she adored.

Today I read there were many complaints as it is apparently homophobic, slut shaming, rapey and should never be televised again!
Oh also there are no black or mixed race actors in the film.

Have we gone too far?

GrandmaKT Sun 03-Jan-21 14:38:09

I love Grease, and, due to my advancing age and declining hearing, watched it with the subtitles on over Christmas. I was surprised to read the words to 'Greased Lightening"! Amazed they got it past the film censors as a PG no matter when it was made!

Some examples below, so move on if easily offended....

^You know that ain't no shit, we'll be getting lots of tit in Greased Lightnin

You are supreme
The chicks'll cream
For Greased Lightnin ^

Some of today's programmes are far too woke for my taste. I watched some of 'The Personal History of David Copperfield.' David was played by an Asian actor.
Also, 'Anne with an E,' based on 'Anne of Green Gables,' in which Aunt Josephine was a lesbian, Gilbert goes to Trinidad, and Miss Stacey wears a tie. E.M. Montgomery will be turning in her grave.
I don't expect many people to agree with me, btw. It's just my opinion.
I love Grease.

I agree!

Agree Antonia

And the suggestion the film should have a warning because
of a line in one of the songs !

I gave just one example, which if you hadn't worked it out could be seen as an encouragement to boys to rape or force a girl to have sex. There are as "GrandmaKT* said a number of other references which are a bit near the mark. My mother thought it was disgusting when she watched it on TV.
When it was on Gogglebox Martin Kemp's son Ronan was visibly shocked by what he heard.

Anniebach Sun 03-Jan-21 14:57:53

I suppose some were shocked when Ronan Kemp thought it
amusing that some of his ex girlfriends fancied his father.

I'd rather watch Grease than some of what passes as entertainment these days. (Naked attraction, anyone?)

Callistemon Sun 03-Jan-21 15:28:04

It seemed rather shocking at the time as I remember that I wouldn't let a very young DD watch it as it might give her wrong ideas of how girls should behave.

Of course, they watched it later and neither they nor their friends turned into vamps in order to attract men!.

timetogo2016 Sun 03-Jan-21 15:31:44

Yet more bullshit,it`s a great fun film.
Woke idiots,i`m getting very tired of all this crap.

Yes, it all seems very contrary doesn't it.
You can't really take 'woke' complaints seriously when there is so much offensive dross prevalent even in the mainstream / prime time areas, Keith Lemon anyone?

Galaxy Sun 03-Jan-21 15:33:38

You cant have it all ways. I agree Grease shouldn't be censored but you have to accept that people will have different views on it.

trisher Sun 03-Jan-21 15:39:20

I don't want to censor it. I do think a warning might be good and anyone who allowed their child to watch it should be prepared to have a discussion about boy's and girl's attitudes to sex and how things have changed.

MissAdventure Sun 03-Jan-21 15:42:23

Sounds like a fun family time.

Sara1954 Sun 03-Jan-21 15:51:41

Love Grease
It’s the first film I took my oldest daughter to see, we both loved it, and still do.
We had booked a big family outing to see the show last year, but sadly it was cancelled

What about all the vile words in rap songs?

Iam64 Sun 03-Jan-21 15:56:16

I enjoyed the new David Copperfield, Dev Patel is brilliant as were the rest of the cast.
If its a choice between something that film and Grease, no contest. Grease is a film of its time and can be watched in that way. this lazy use of words like 'woke' to dismiss anything that challenges stereotypes is tedious.

Anniebach Sun 03-Jan-21 15:59:19

Sinatra - The Lady Is A Tramp ?

Very good point.

I was humming along to a Cardi B song. My youngest asked if I knew what the lyrics were. What a surprise!

I do quite like Bodak Yellow though

All Disney films but be banned surely

Sleeping Beauty - in a deep sleep, what was she on ?, and whilst in bed asleep a man pounces on her

Snow White - shacked up with 7 men

Cinderella- shocking , wicked step mother

Callistemon Sun 03-Jan-21 16:27:44

grin

Dreadful - such a bad influence on little girls
And not good messages for little boys either.

AGAA4 Sun 03-Jan-21 16:29:59

I watched Grease a few nights ago and enjoyed it as much as ever.
Some of the modern films are full of swearing and violence, which is more offensive to me.

Kandinsky Sun 03-Jan-21 16:41:39

I don’t think history should be rewritten in any way shape or form - but I’m so glad the awful sexist ( TV ) stuff of the 60’s / 70’s is no longer with us. I remember growing up watching stuff like Benny Hill & ‘Are you being served’ - I couldn’t understand why grotesque old men had half naked young women draped all over them.
So glad we wised up and TV started portraying women as more than just titillation.

trisher Sun 03-Jan-21 16:47:56

Disney have embraced strong women- Frozen , Moana etc.

MissAdventure Sun 03-Jan-21 16:53:53

They've done some disservice to women too, over the years.
Skivvies, witches... wicked stepmothers.

FarNorth Sun 03-Jan-21 16:59:09

I haven't watched Game of Thrones but I believe it included a lot of violence, especially against women.
Apparently lots of young people loved it. confused
