again, showing the way.

Scottish accents vary hugely. Some are lovely, some harsh and ugly. Unfortunately NS’s is in the latter category. I find her speech so unpleasant that I can’t separate what she says from the sounds she makes.

She reminds me of a little yappy dog. I can’t take her seriously.

Septimia Tue 05-Jan-21 11:46:04

In answer to those who wonder why I think Nicola is hypocritical regarding her English grandparents - it's because she comes across as anti-English but there's no mention of her heritage.

And she's an opportunist. She takes advantage of situations to make herself look good. So many people were praising her for the payouts to people/businesses struggling due to the pandemic. Where did the money come from? Westminster. Give me Ruth Davidson any day.

For what it is worth I love the Scottish accent. It took me a while to understand the various Scottish terms when I taught up there but got there in the end!

Re. Glasgow accents - and dialect - you would find it educative to watch Stanley Baxer's series:
Parliamo Glasgow.

Casdon: although I did feel sorry for Birmingham.

grin grin

Accents from Clydebank probably have a low press rating too. It's mainly due to the almost total lack of consonants, I feel grin

yes, we are chatting lemon, isn't it lovely.

Am presuming this thread and your comments are because you disliked t’other thread.......where you castigate posters for daring to chat and for putting the thread under ‘chat’ ?
So you have done the same here, a tad petulant but doesn’t worry me at all, yes it is lovely to chat.?

You beat me to it lemongrove!
I thought exactly the same.

Yes, it is nice to chat biba70 when a topic is under ‘chat’.
?

Casdon Mon 04-Jan-21 20:49:11

I just looked that up Baggs, very interesting - the latest survey said the Yorkshire accent is the most trustworthy in the UK, followed by Queens English, Edinburgh Scottish, then Welsh (which is a very broad church of accents!). I think accents could be a topic all of its own, although I did feel sorry for Birmingham.

Marydoll Mon 04-Jan-21 20:48:23

I never said it was racist, Paddyanne. In fact I made a point of not using that term, that is why I chose to use the term offensive. If I thought it was racist, I would have reported it.

However, I am entitled to state how I feel about the comment and I didn't like it. Simple as that. I am also wondering why the poster felt it necessary to make that statement in the first place.

However, as GN is open to all, she has as much right as anyone to post. We just don't have to like what she posts.

paddyanne Mon 04-Jan-21 20:38:54

Its not Racist though ,Marydoll we're not a race ,just a nation.According to a lawyer my friend saw when he was subjected to "racist" abuse in London .It did effectively make him come home and join the SNP .

Baggs Mon 04-Jan-21 20:38:17

I think it's quite unusual to dislike Scottish accents, especially very clear ones. I think surveys have shown that, of British reassuring-sounding accents, what is called an "educated Scottish accent" is the most preferred where things like confidence and honesty are important.

Marydoll Mon 04-Jan-21 20:34:06

Deedaa

DH greatly disliked the Scottish accent and particularly women with Scottish accents. However for some reason he really liked Nicola. I presume speaking sense overcame the accent.

Deedaa, you are very brave to post that, considering how many females posters with Scottish accents may read this thread.

It's actually quite offensive. sad

paddyanne Mon 04-Jan-21 20:32:54

Lots of NEW Scots are pro Indy* Lemongrove*,they see the lack of democracy in the present set up and think we could do much better ourselves ...and her other GP's may well have long roots here .Who knows ? I watched a programme fromRothesay the other night and some Syrian refugees were interviewd ..they regard Scotland as home, were welcomed, helped to settle and some have their own businesses ...THAT is what we want people who are happy to be here .

Lucca Mon 04-Jan-21 20:29:28

paddyanne

Lucca but not Dominic Cummings !!

Think her transgression was worse to be honest. But yes, true, he weasled out.

I think the comment about Sturgeons grandparents coming from England mean that they were surprised at how ‘new’ she is to Scotland. With her rhetoric you could be forgiven for thinking she had ancestors going back to when Robert The Bruce was a lad.

Mogsmaw Mon 04-Jan-21 20:24:14

Quote Deedaa . I cannot believe you think it’s acceptable to share this.
Imagine swapping Scottish for, say, Jamaican. Would you be so brazen as to share then.
I’m glad I can type this and not have to subject anyone to my unacceptable accent.

Elegran Mon 04-Jan-21 20:20:09

Why would you want to go to Scotland in the middle of a pandemic. Septimia ? You would either pick up the virus from the natives or carry it to them from your home town, neither of them exactly neighbourly things to do. Wait until it is over and travel resumes again, then you can go - and be perfectly welcome! No-one has EVER said that English tourists are unwelcome.

And what is wrong with having grandparents from Sunderland? You would be amazed at how many Scots (me, for instance) have ancestors who were born elsewhere - just like the English, actually. It doesn't stop them being very fond of the place they live now. Perhaps those ancestors began by taking holidays in Scotland and liked it so much they decided to stay?

NotSpaghetti Mon 04-Jan-21 20:12:02

Ashcombe ??

Marydoll Mon 04-Jan-21 20:08:57

Biba I find myself asking the same question. I'm puzzled. What is hypocritical about NS having grandparents from Sunderland??

As I have stated before, I'm not a great fan, but she is decisive and trying to do her best for the people of Scotland. I would have her over that buffoon Boris any day.
Many countries others have closed their borders to try and protect the population.

No-one should be thinking of travelling to Scotland for a holiday at present. I can't even travel ten minutes to my daughter's because it's in the next county! If it will slow down the transmission, I'm all for it.

SueDonim Mon 04-Jan-21 20:02:03

Oh, I didn’t realise everything was hunkydory in Scotland and that there is no pandemic here. People haven’t died in their hundreds in care homes, people haven’t had their livings decimated, no one has had their freedoms restricted. We can gaze with pity on the rest of the world, knowing life is a peach here. hmm

All I can see is that NS talks a good talk and that it’s a good way of deflecting from the many ways in which Scotland is going downhill. Oh, and she has time to pontificate on independence, too! A woman of many talents, clearly.

lemongrove Mon 04-Jan-21 20:00:47

Paddyann there is a video of her saying that her most important responsibility is to be Chief Parent to Scotland, then she says ‘Or Chief Mammy as we say around here’.
It’s a bit toe curling.

biba70 Mon 04-Jan-21 20:00:18

Why on earth would that be hypocritical?

Septimia Mon 04-Jan-21 19:58:51

I'm definitely not a fan. She has dealt with things clearly, but has often made sure that she's made herself look good.

I get annoyed about Scottish independence - many of us have ancestors, family and friends north of the border; DH and I also prefer to head north for holidays and Edinburgh is much nicer than London, yet thanks to Ms Sturgeon we now feel unwelcome.

Did you know that Ms Sturgeon's grandparents came from Sunderland ? Hypocritical?

biba70 Mon 04-Jan-21 19:55:50

Oh no it is not! (me)

biba70 Mon 04-Jan-21 19:55:06

Goose - gander- why petulant ;)
