Woolies - although I guess Wilko and various other places have filled the gap.

Our BHS had gone downhill a lot so I miss it from its heyday but not from how it had become iyswim.

I really miss C&A I still have a fur duffel coat I bought there years ago. Also BHS and Woolworths. Woolies was where I used to spend my Saturday afternoons when I was young.

Going way back in time Chelsea Girl was a great teen fashion shop. Timothy Whites ,Richards Shop, C and A,East, Habitat, there are so many stores that are no longer with us.
.

My first job was in Chelsea Girl, I was a Saturday girl earning the princely sum of £4.50! I remember trousers being priced between £2.99 and £7.49, the price went up depending on the width of the flare. We lived in a town with a lot of factories, and the factory girls finished early on a Friday and flocked to the shops to buy something to go out in for the evening; if anything was returned on a Saturday, the manageress would make us check them thoroughly and sniff them for signs of make-up or perfume (or worse -ugh) as she was convinced they wore the clothes once then brought them back for a refund! I did love working there otherwise, though. smile

I used to like Sainsbury's in the 1970s, they had all sorts of nice food in fairly small packs. I was a student, had just left home and was living in a bed sitter and I loved to go there in the late afternoon to buy something interesting to cook on my Baby Belling! They did inexpensive packs of raw rice with different herbs and spices, including curried which was delicious. Their stores are all anonymous and dull now.
We used to love Woolies for different reasons, my DH liked the small DIY section, my DC the pick 'n mix, the make up, toys and little bits of jewellery. I liked the small collection of childrens' clothes and the household bits and pieces. I still have some small stainless steel waste bins which were sold as kitchen canisters with lids and some lovely rich dark blue mugs.
I remember buying my mother a bracelet from there when I was very small and was touched to find it amongst her possessions when she died.
My first forrays into gardening were packs of seeds and some loose snowdrop bulbs from there.

Above all, I miss our local post office. I've really felt like a fish out of water without it. I like having cash all the time and their ATM supplied that, plus cards, stamps and postage.
I'm completely stuck when there are cards to send to Oz as they have to be weighed before being sent.

Access to other post offices is by bus, which I won't use. I just feel completely isolated. The local butcher and veg shops only take cash. Plastic isn't always for me. £1,000 which I had hidden last year has all but gone but having that round the place was giving me nightmares. It's been particularly awful for me really having been used to full independence.

I'd forgotten about Dickens and Jones in Regent Street. It was a lovely shop, much better than most of the House of Fraser stores but one of the first they closed. I bought my wedding drress their in the evening dress department - £50!
Also Bus Stop which was my go-to shop in the 60's, and BHS bras and cafe.

I went to Leipzig a couple of years ago and was thrilled to find C&A on their high street; and yes, I did go in and buy something from the Clock House....

(sorry, terrible typos)

East opened online again at some stage but don't know if it is still going. The clothes just weren't the same, more like the over fussy stuff from Monsoon than the nice, simple, well made clothes from East.

Wizardofoz Wed 13-Jan-21 11:14:52

barbiann57 Wed 13-Jan-21 11:15:39

I miss MS mainly for underwear and their Food Hall, ours shut down some years ago.

JaneJudge Wed 13-Jan-21 11:21:10

Does anyone know what the shop was called that had a ladies section at the front and Tammy girl and a lingerie section at the back? I remember being completely obsessed with buying teen clothes and underwear from there!

I miss old fashioned department stores too

JaneJudge Wed 13-Jan-21 11:22:26

There is obviously a theme here but I miss the old knickerbox shops too. They sold really pretty underwear which apparently is now quite a raunchy brand and sold in Ann Summers grin shock

bongobil Wed 13-Jan-21 11:22:42

Woolies, BHS, C & A and Jane Norman (remember them ladies, I loved their clothes back in the day lol)

Kate1949 Wed 13-Jan-21 11:24:12

Chelsea Girl, Etams. In the '70s there was a great shop here in Birmingham called Henry's. They sold lovely trendy clothes very cheaply. I was in there every week on pay day.

Nicegranny Wed 13-Jan-21 11:25:41

I think some of us miss “the good old days” l know l do.

Kate1949 Wed 13-Jan-21 11:27:15

I loved Dolcis for shoes too.

GagaJo Wed 13-Jan-21 11:28:27

I miss Habitat. A bit expensive for what it was, but some lovely designs.
