What do we NOT have in the kitchen these days??

Just watching the Hairy Bikers make a steamed pudding (the old fashioned way), - and they used a saucer to make a trivet for in their pot for steaming..

Now I do have a small trivet in the cupboard, and to make steamed pudding these days, I use the microwave rather than that hours in a saucepan.

However, when I thought about it, realised that nowhere in my kitchen is there such a thing as a saucer. As I only use mugs for drinks, long since got rid of cups and saucers to charity shops.

Felt rather silly not having such a basic item as a saucer any more

Love my tea pot - bags in mugs always seem wasteful to me . At work the tea round of 10 uses 10 bags - with a pot you could get away with a whole lot less plus a second cup ?. Also love my Easiyo yogurt maker but glad to see the back of pressure cooker - I was too scared of the horrendous noises it made !!! The loft contains many boxes of random household items, fish knives, sugar tongs, tongue press (don’t ask be assured it’s not for humans!!!) beautiful handmade quilts (treasured) linen napkins, cream maker, Sodastream ........ I do admit I love using a very fine bone china teaset on high days and holidays as it’s so lovely to drink, from but the cups are so small and the refill from the teapot is never so good as the first cup or as hot ? so mugs for every day essential tea drinking .

A chip pan full of lard! My mum always had one for home made chips, etc. So dangerous, always remember as a child the fire brigade being called to houses cos the chip pan went on fire. Air fryer healthier and much safer nowadays.

Mil and Fil gave us a set of cutlery for our 25th Wedding Anniverasry. Last year I thought , for goodness sake why am I keeping it? So now we use it along with our ordinary cutlery and the kids took the wooden box.
The first time we used it we found that forks are blunt and the knives uncomfortable to use - and I kept it for nearly 25 years to keep it ‘safe’!

Goodness me.... I have loads of cups and saucers. They are rarely used but I have them. Tea has to be made in a cup. I don't have a microwave....dont see the point...waste of space.

A gas fridge with elegant curved legs - I remember it so well. The pilot light underneath used to blow out now and again when someone shut the back door. I was very good at detecting when that had happened.

Such a dangerous thing!

Never had a Spong mincer though and ditched pressure cooker when slow cookers arrived.

Somebody upthread mentioned a cream maker. I think they were by Bell? Blue plastic top and glass bottom. Essential for 1970s frugal dinner parties!
I actually bought a new yoghurt maker a couple of years ago to cut down on plastic use. Use it every week.
I have also kept my grandmother’s earthenware salt pot. Apparently she used to buy salt in a block and break it into pieces, judging by eye how much she needed. She was cooking for 11 children so it must have been quite a lot!

I don't have a Donkey Stone or a posher.

Just talking about grapefruit knives on radio 4!

I used to have a coffee percolator but always disliked the slightly stewed taste of the coffee.
We moved to a flat recently from a house with loads of storage, a big kitchen and a larder so I sorted out my kit into "keep" and "charity shop".
Fortunately the charity shops were shut when we moved as the hob and oven in the flat are awful and slow so I've been using a portable one pan induction hob, an old combi microwave and a multicooker rescued from my charity shop boxes. I'm so glad they survived the purge when we moved!

I have a full set of fish knives and forks - never used. What a shame, I think I might get them out and see what they're like to actually use.

I would never be without a pressure cooker but I've recently updated my ancient one to an fancy dancy electric multicooker.

It meant I could also throw out my ancient slow cooker. The settings on the dial had all worn away so it was just as well I knew them off by heart.

Having sliced off the tops of peppers for stuffing, I find my grapefruit knife (redundant with current meds) ideal for removing the unwanted seedy bits inside.

Was given scales with weights for a wedding present 40 years ago and still use them. Hubby loves them for bread making.
My MIL’s mixing bowl - identical to the one my mother had
3 hand whisks
Potato ricer
Cast iron teapot with built in strainer / I love loose tea
Stainless steel double walled butter dish
Blackbird pie funnels
All the above in regular use

I would really like a large fat separator.

Years ago we had a twin tub which leaked. I hated it with a passion - inherited from hubby’s previous marriage!

My grandma had a washing machine with gas burners underneath and a mangle on the top

I've got a pickle fork and a set of cake forks lined -up for the charity shop when they reopen.

I have my late mums cake forks. They were something I remember her wanting for a long time before she got them.

DH got "messy" cake the other day and served it with dinner forks. I teased him and said that we did have cake forks and when we had some more the the following day he got the cake forks out!!

Fernhillnana Sat 16-Jan-21 10:37:39

I would really like a grapefruit knife but they seem to come in sets of 4! I wish I had a marmalade cutter. My friend inherited one and I’m envious.

Gwenisgreat1 Sat 16-Jan-21 10:34:27

I no longer have a mangle, separate washing machine and spin dryer, mincer - I do have saucers, loads of them! I do have a carpet sweeper which I never use. I bought scales with weights in a Boots sale in Aberdeen about 30 years ago - I love it!! you can keep the spring ones, they didn't last!

Phloembundle Sat 16-Jan-21 10:30:37

I love my cake forks. We have a few saucers that the dog eats her dinner from. I was talking about mangles to my mum this morning. I said I bet they got sheets drier than a washing machine can spin them. Of course they didn't have fab con in those days which retains so much water in the fabric. I don't have steamer, sandwich maker or lean, mean, grilling machine any more.

Milk jug!

Mamma7 Sat 16-Jan-21 10:27:09

Yes, we had a chrome double-spoon loose tea maker - just reminded me! It must have a shorter name!!
