What's the strangest or most ridiculous advice you've been given?

missdeke Tue 19-Jan-21 10:58:10

After suffering with a persistant cough for 2 years I finally got to see a consultant. He put a camera down my throat and told me my pharynx was raw and inflamed. I asked what could be done about it, his advice 'stop coughing'!!! 4 years later I'm still coughing......

Eldest son and his constant you need to get........ Took his advice and still struggling with my I phone technology smile Now take my mum’s advice if it’s not broke don’t fix it.

Don't wash your hair or have a bath when you have your period! My best friend in the late sixties. I ignored her.

My Mum told me that.

Sparklefizz Tue 19-Jan-21 11:09:48

My Mum also advised don't sit on the ground, you'll get piles.

Purplepoppies Tue 19-Jan-21 11:24:14

A GP told me to 'pull myself together ' when I felt suicidal. I have been clinically depressed since a teenager. I refused to see him again. Idiot.

Gwenisgreat1 Tue 19-Jan-21 11:27:55

Did you have to have a baby in December? It's ruined my plans!!

Gwenisgreat1 Tue 19-Jan-21 11:28:36

Oops that was from my Mum

geekesse Tue 19-Jan-21 11:33:01

I can live with ‘if I were you...’ but I get really cross when people say ‘what you really want to do is...’ because it assumes I don’t know my own mind. Grrrr.

Fernhillnana Tue 19-Jan-21 11:34:12

When I divorced my mum said I wouldn’t need a double bed anymore. How wrong she was!

Oopsadaisy1 Tue 19-Jan-21 11:34:27

Moggycuddler it’s a cork to stop restless legs, mind you the wine makes a mess in the bed without a cork in it, oh well drink it all , that will definitely stop the restless legs!

PollyDolly Tue 19-Jan-21 11:37:27

Kate1949

'Stop being upset about your alopecia. It's only hair'. This from someone with lovely thick hair.

That's was cruel Kate1949! Hope you told them to do one!?!?

Kim19 Tue 19-Jan-21 11:38:20

I too had the raw potato suggestion for RLS but didn't need to try it as the alternative suggestion of a bar of toilet soap was more attractive and worked a treat. Still is. Mind you, messy as it sounds, I would have tried it I was so desperate.

Lynn1959 Tue 19-Jan-21 11:39:43

Not sure if this was advice but I once went into school because my daughter struggled with spelling. At the end of meeting the teacher finished with” spelling really doesn’t matter much nowadays”!!!!!!!!!

BusterTank Tue 19-Jan-21 11:40:36

My mother in law telling me don't cuddle my child because I would spoil her .

thuberon Tue 19-Jan-21 11:49:03

"Don't get an automatic washing machine, get another twin tub"

G00denough Tue 19-Jan-21 11:52:39

'Sticks and stones may hurt your bones but words will never harm you'

Nanna58 Tue 19-Jan-21 11:59:01

From my wildly superstitious Irish Nan “ Don’t look in the mirror in a storm, if lightning strikes you’ll go mad!!”?

Lexisgranny Tue 19-Jan-21 12:03:25

Another doctor one - Being told by a doctor (whose buttocks overhung the chair she was sitting on) that I should lose weight when I was well within the range for my height.

GrammarGrandma Tue 19-Jan-21 12:05:39

"Why don't you ...?" was the response of my late mother-in-law to any statement about what we planned to do, suggesting something else entirely. Now my sister-in-law does it!

shysal Tue 19-Jan-21 12:05:47

Worse than saying 'if I was you' is 'you want to ---'. I have a friend who often says this and it makes me mad!

threexnanny Tue 19-Jan-21 12:10:37

Midwife telling me to take a sleeping pill and get some rest as I could not possibly be in labour - I gave birth about half an hour later!

bongobil Tue 19-Jan-21 12:13:35

Don't apply for that job you are unemployable! My mum said that to me about 10 years ago!

Growing0ldDisgracefully Tue 19-Jan-21 12:31:41

From my husband, as a response to many things I say or do "what you should have said (or done)".
Maybe what I should have done was to bury him under the patio.....
