Backhanded compliment? The things men say (lighthearted!)

A few days ago I came downstairs and DH said ‘you smell nice . I thanked him & thought it must be hand cream or moisturiser as I hadn’t used any perfume. This morning he said over breakfast ‘you smell lovely’ , what is it? I held my hand out and asked if it was my hand cream . No , it wasn’t . Later he came into the bathroom as I was cleaning the bath . ‘That’s it , he said , the lovely smell . Turns out I often smell lovely , just like the bathroom cleaner?

I'm off to test the household cleaners; will be a lot cheaper than usual perfume.

What fun this thread is - just what I needed on this miserable day !!!

When I asked a friend if she fancied meeting up at our house, she said no, and stated that it would be much nicer to meet at a mutual friend’s house as she had a lovely conservatory. It left me feeling very much second best.
Same friend stated that one of the houses near us was ‘hideous’, it was a similar design to ours.

I met a distant acquaintance at antenatal classes and once the babies were born she came to my house for coffee. She then told me I was so lucky to have such a small house as it must be so much easier to keep clean and warm and I didn't have the problem of cleaners, gardeners etc LOL. And then much later whilst working as a new office temp my department boss went to a meeting and unknowingly met a close friend of mine. On her return she said “ I had no idea you have a degree. Isnt it amazing how you get an impression of people which proves to be so wrong” LOL. Ironically she was redundant a few months later. I stayed over 20 years. Karma at its best

Some "complimenters" are experts at timing, aren't they?

My hygienist: "You've got good teeth ......... for a Scot."

My so called friend: "You're quite good looking ......... from a distance." !!

Urmstongran

Himself is king of the one-liners & he does make me laugh. Occasionally when I get in from the hairdresser’s he will glance over and say ‘so they cancelled your appointment then’.
?

??Urms Himself could be related to my brother but I know he isn’t.
I was telling my brother a story one day of something that happened during my day which included the line ‘I was going to the hairdressers’ to which he replied ‘I can see they were closed’ ??

I went with a divorced friend to a grab a granny night to help him as he had no single friends. We spent most of the evening together as he found fault with all the 'cheap looking women. Then he asked if I wanted to ask any of the men to dance because he said some men might find you attractive!

These have really made me laugh- glad I’m not the only one who receives these sort of ‘compliments ?

I can relate to that handbaghoarder I had a 'friend' who used to say the same thing almost every time she visited, " I wish I had a little house like yours so cosy"

I bought a new top many years ago & made the mistake of asking my husband if he liked it. If you like it that’s all that matters he said with a smirk on his face. He said it reminded him of bingo. It had a logo on it ‘active8’. I knew what he meant & never wore it again. ( 88 in bingo is 2 fat ladies. So every time I went to put it on I was reminded of him thinking of 1 fat lady)?

My husband finds it hard to compliment me.Strange really seeing as any woman he knows he compliments the backside off them!!! I've learnt I do it back????

A friend at work was complimented on her new hairstyle, and then the person complimenting ruined it all by saying “it looks much better than it used to do”. Charming.

I always keep my hair very short. After the last lockdown I told my friend I had a hair appointment. Don't let them cut it so short this time she said.

To make it worse I was so taken aback I actually thanked her!!!

I walked in the house from shopping and my husband , never knowingly caught out issuing a complement said " you've had your hair done, it's nice". I said I hadn't to which he insisted " yes you have, that lovely brown colour on the ends". That 'lovely brown colour 'was the final remnant of two years worth of insecurity , growing my dyed colour out and being glad to be grey- or not as the case may be.

At primary school the popular girls were saying that if you’re ugly you’ll grow up to be pretty and visa versus. Then one of them turned to me and sounded really happy for me when she said “you’ll be really pretty when you grow up “.

micky987 Wed 20-Jan-21 19:39:59

Vice versa

I once went to a party in a lovely black jumpsuit and a lady said to me in the toilets. “You look amazing in that outfit, I wouldn’t be seen dead in it, but you look great” I said “thanks, I think!!”
(I did actually look amazing, those were the days)

I passed an acquaintance as I was going to the shops and she commented that she’d just seen my daughter. On being told she must be mistaken as my daughter was still at home her reply was ‘Well she was the image of you .... very plain but she had a lovely smile! ? ? ?

V3ra Wed 20-Jan-21 20:48:19

Our Mum to my sister:
"I shouldn't really say this to you, but you look really nice" ?‍♀️

grannyrebel7 Wed 20-Jan-21 21:32:06

My best compliment from my DH was when I'd come back from having my eyebrows waxed and tinted. He took one look at me and told me that I looked like Saddam Hussein when they pulled him out of the hole! It's a good thing I'm not easily offended smile

welbeck Wed 20-Jan-21 21:46:22

i dread to imagine what a, grab a granny night, is !

kircubbin2000 Wed 20-Jan-21 22:24:08

Wednesday and Saturday disco in the pub/hotel was called grab a granny because of the large number of older divorced women, usually drunk so an easy pick up.My friend was actually quite a nasty person as I later found out.He always referred to my friend as your wee friend whatshername in a patronising way even though he had known her for years.
The other thing I found nasty was when he became a Samaritan.
He told me the people who rang for help couldn't have been very nice people.Surely if you had any friends you would speak to them and not some stranger he said,so they must have had no friends!
