David Attenborough said to Princess Charlotte, who likes spiders, that he thought people were afraid of them because they have so many more legs than we have, and so they can move in any direction and we don’t know which way it will be. I’m not scared of spiders myself, but I could see what he meant.
I have a fear of electric bells and buzzers, even doorbells. I think it dates from schooldays, when in middle school we had a very fierce matron who used to make us change our shoes very quickly between lessons, before the bell went. I immediately became all fingers and thumbs, and couldn’t change quickly enough. How I dreaded that bell! Strange, really, because what could she have done to us?
