Cruises - would you ever go on another cruise?

I’d love to, I quite like cruising but I am too scared after the Diamond Princess business and all those poor people stuck on board for weeks.
It is nice to relax for a week or three and not have to worry about carting luggage around when you are cruising.

You do get to see some wonderful things that you might not see by road. Someone mentioned flying fishes and that was a huge highlight for me seeing them on a pacific cruise. Also I was fascinated by tiny birds flying close to the sea in the middle of nowhere, no land in sight . It made me realise how absolutely huge the Pacific is. You get to meet people from many different countries, too. However else would we have met a young slightly odd Chinese man who was obviously mega rich and the son of a party official? Not to mention all the Canadians and Americans who seem to love cruising.
I look forward to the day, maybe in a couple of years , when we could go back on a ship.Meanwhile, fingers crossed we remain safe.

No - have loved the cruises we have been on but don't even know if I would holiday abroad anywhere now!

We enjoy cruising but we like to add on a week in an interesting but restful location. We love getting out at all the ports but we also like a week or so of being on dry land.
Getting off the ship at ports often means an early start and one eye on the time for getting back. We enjoy this but are a bit lazy so we like a week of partly chilling and partly setting off and returning from our days out at any time we feel like.

The one thing I am not keen on is spending my evening having to chat to random strangers, with whom I may or may not have something in common, while I eat my dinner. The first cruise I ever went on was a bit like that, but I have found it no problem to get a table for two since then.

I feel a bit nervous about resuming cruising at the moment when I think of the people stranded in their cabins for weeks on end with food provided by people also crammed in on board. A recipe for disaster with this virus. So many died. I think [and hope] that with better testing now, if the virus did break out, they could people testing negative away from the ship to isolate elsewhere until it was definite they were clear. But who knows? I think that, in the light of the cruise industry's past experience, I would want to know what they have learned and if they have, at least in theory, strategies in place to move pdq.

I will be back to cruising, but I think next year at the earliest.

My friend goes on two or three every year she always comes back 2 stone heavier and moans about it until the next one she sometimes goes on saga ones and tells me all the stories of the Zimmer frames and mobility scooters outside the dinning rooms and the old man in the next cabin who used to knock on the wall for her to help him dress She loves it
Not for me at all I like to know I can leave something if I m not enjoying it and not just leave to my ‘bedroom’

Can’t wait. We have two booked for this year (both booked pre-COVID). Not sure how likely they are to go ahead, of course.

Callistemon Sun 24-Jan-21 18:29:15

I might.

There are so many places I'd still like to see and I'd rather go by ship than on coach tours and I think driving miles ourselves is just too much.

Chewbacca Sun 24-Jan-21 18:26:01

If I could afford to, and it was safe to do so, I would.

Tangerine Sun 24-Jan-21 18:20:36

Not 2021 quite definitely. I shall see how things pan out before I even think of going on one in 2022.

There are so many other ways to have a holiday and see wonderful places.

Wow Grannybags world cruise!
Kate I’m with you I’ll carry on enjoying Jane McDonald’s cruises from the comfort of my armchair!

Havin spent the last 25 years on a biggish boat (42ft every holiday, you could have lived on it, all mod cons) it can become very boring and quite claustrophobic.

Daisymae Sun 24-Jan-21 16:49:07

Lesley - you can stay in jeans if that's what you want to do.

blue25 Sun 24-Jan-21 15:17:48

Yes can’t wait. We’re planning quite a few, but not for a while obviously!

Jane10 Sun 24-Jan-21 14:55:15

Lesley60 there is absolutely no need to dress up to the nines or eat with strangers. There is some strange misinformation about cruises around. There are all sorts of cruises. If people like formal nights that's fine and they can book those sorts of cruises. More informal cruises in quiet smaller ships are to our taste.
The visits to various locations are ideal to give us ideas for places we'd like to return to for longer holidays.
Our last one, a Baltic cruise, was lovely. The highlight for me was opening the curtains in the morning and being surrounded by the green beauty of a fjord. The long sail out of Stockholm was another highlight. Just sitting on our balcony watching it all flow past was a real treat. We could dine any time in any of a variety of restaurants. If we wanted to meet up again with any particular passengers we'd have to make an arrangement to do so as you couldn't count on bumping into them and that was on a relatively small ship. Impossible to feel 'cooped up'.

We’ve been on two, one in the Mediterranean and one in the Caribbean, 2015 and 2016. We enjoyed them both, Costa cruises, we didn’t dress up at all, deliberately chose them for that, smaller ships. We visited places we hadn’t been to before, but decided not to do another one, sort of been there done that.

Lesley60 Sun 24-Jan-21 14:45:48

Apart from covid I wouldn’t want to dress up to the nines every evening and sit for food with strangers making small talk

Mariel Sun 24-Jan-21 14:40:00

Absolutely! I love going on cruises. There are lots of different ships and types of cruises so you don’t have to have a Holiday camp experience if you don’t want one! Just choose carefully! I know a ship with a climbing wall is not for me! I’ve never put on weight due to all the lovely choices of healthy food and I just adore being at sea. I’ve seen whales, dolphins, seals and flying fish. Because of the Noro virus risk hygiene on the ships I’ve been on was very thorough, probably better than a resort hotel. I’m not worried and have a cruise booked for later this year. I can’t wait!

Daisymae Sun 24-Jan-21 14:34:38

Have been on a few cruises, wouldn't have tried but for my husbands disability. We really enjoyed it, much to our surprise. I would go again when it was safe, all things considered but I doubt that my husband will ever be well enough. Those who are saying Butlins by the sea have probably never tried it. You can make it what you want, its interesting that many who are saying no have never been. That couple who were isolated for months and ended up catching Covid have booked for several this year. Not looking like they will be going, but the will was there.

mistymitts Sun 24-Jan-21 14:21:51

Apart from it being extremely bad from an environmental point of view, emissions are huge, I would not be able to resist all the food and would end up overweight and miserable!

Kim19 Sun 24-Jan-21 14:18:41

Yes. Can't wait. Plan to book up whenever it's manageable, legal and the price is right.

grannyrebel7 Sun 24-Jan-21 14:13:20

Exactly cornishpasty Butlin's on the sea! Went on one once and it was ok, but don't really fancy it again.

NotSpaghetti Sun 24-Jan-21 14:09:19

Yes, I agree with BBbevan - I certainly was never bored,

Regarding eating what you fancy, the cruise I went on had food available on request so if you wanted porridge or a sandwich or a croissants or whatever it could be supplied.
You didn't have to eat lobster or whatever else was on the menu. In fact someone I travelled with had ham salad every day it seemed to me!

My (one and only) cruise was one where you dressed for dinner but you didn't have to if you wanted easy informal meals on deck or were happy to dine in the bistro on board.

I just felt that I wanted to know more about the places we visited so just a day or two at any one place didn't work for me.

cornishpatsy Sun 24-Jan-21 14:08:35

To me cruises are like a massive holiday camp, not my thing but each to their own.

Annie26 Sun 24-Jan-21 14:08:03

Have only ever been on one and that was to the Norwegian Fjords. I really wasn’t sure if we would like it but were pleasantly surprised. We went on a very large ship it never felt crowded and we rarely saw the same people twice. Were hoping to go on another one this year but don’t feel confident enough to book one up at the moment.

BBbevan Sun 24-Jan-21 13:54:23

We loved cruising and never ever felt ‘captive’. There were lots of things to do on ‘sea’ days.
But we are not very keen to go for a while yet. Perhaps 2022 or 3.
