The changing face of Gransnet?

I am a 'lockdown-joiner' to this forum, welcoming the opportunity join in with others who are similarly 'shut inside'.

I have been wondering whether people have found that the site has changed in any way over the last year?

Themes/quantity of posts/membership/patience/tolerance?

Just curious!

Well not to me, Charleygirl! You have been nothing, but kind to me when I have been struggling.
I like you because you are forthright and I know I can trust you. What you see is what you get.

Marydoll Sat 30-Jan-21 19:31:50

Hazbeen, I have to agree with you, about making up rules. On occasions, I have suspected that a lack of insight and experience has resulted in a gut reaction by some moderators in deleting posts and threads.
I have no proof, but it seems to depend on whoever is on duty, and who the poster is, what the response is.

I totally agree with janeainsworth and Chewbacca. I also agree that there are many more new names but they do not post regularly.

When a prize has been won, it is so nice to recognise a name that posts regularly instead of those who only play games or attempt to win prizes.

I am on my final warning so all I feel I can do is discuss the weather. Health I think is verboten as is mentioning old posters.

I am amazed too Charleygirl....although you did once dance on our tables when sozzled in The Argy.?

Ixion as a oldie I d love an answer to your questions too

I never knew what’s happened or who’s who or who s done what wrong
I think the moderators are VERY heavy handed and it makes me feel like they see us all as naughty little school kids who can’t be trusted

grannysyb Sat 30-Jan-21 19:48:29

I may be wrong, but my understanding is that some people are in the "norty " step, and as I'm missing a couple of people who I know to be be perfectly reasonable, I just wonder what's going on?

honeyrose Sat 30-Jan-21 19:50:43

Welcome to our new members and I hope you decide to stay with GN. I’ve only been on GN for about 6 months and I can’t say I’ve noticed any changes, but guess i’m still a newbie. I have noticed, though, that some threads disappear very quickly. There was one yesterday about that dreadful tv programme “Naked Attraction”. I was going to respond today and put my two penn’th in and it’s gone! I wonder whether the responses had got a bit graphic and therefore it’s been deleted? I do enjoy GN - it’s like having a lovely group of friends and I’m getting to know which of you have similar ways of thinking to myself!

Callistemon I am rude and sarcastic and what I write is not within the spirit of the post. Now you know!

I know my place on the norty step.

shock

Untrue!
Some minion must have taken exception and misunderstood one of your posts.

BlueBelle Sat 30-Jan-21 21:17:43

That’s nonsense charliegirl
Unfortunately for me I won’t live in fear of never saying anyone’s name or asking if I m worried about someone

Marydoll Sat 30-Jan-21 21:24:32

Bluebelle, all spontaneity has gone. I remember when posters used to have quickfire banter, however I now read and re-read before posting.

Shrub Sat 30-Jan-21 21:45:57

honeyrose do you mean this one www.gransnet.com/forums/tv_radio_film_arts/1291009-Naked-attraction ? I think it’s still there under TV.

I will be amazed if this thread will still be around at midday tomorrow. GNHQ is usually a tad short on the ground staff wise at weekends.

You are quite correct MerylStreep I could not sit back and take the goading and rudeness.

It is really cold outside so I am going to bed to read my book. Nite, nite.

Marydoll Sat 30-Jan-21 22:01:38

Best to retreat Charleygirl, we don't want to lose you. X

Thank you Jane All accolades gratefully received ?

On the subject of not being allowed to mention missing members we had a thread, at least 15 pages long, about a GN whose name began with a Christmas jingle. As far as I remember that thread did not get deleted. This must have been 2/3 years ago and it was she who often talked about being on the “norty step”. She did attempt to come back a couple of times, but someone must have reported her, or maybe she just got fed up. She was certainly a character.

I’m sure GNHQ don’t plough through all the posts so does someone complain to them if there is a heated exchange, or someone is just not playing nicely? I do wonder.

Doodledog Sat 30-Jan-21 22:21:38

ginny

I ‘m obviously not going to name names but I feel there are a small amount of posters who can be very opinionated , not liking to be disagreed with and others who will complain at the least perceived ‘ insult’. As usual the minority spoiling things for the majority.
I certainly avoid some threads and skip comments from certain posters .

I don't know who you are getting at, as you are being very vague, but usually people who are opinionated and argumentative are the least likely to complain when others are the same back, in my experience in 'real life' anyway.

Some like robust debate and others don't, but it tends to be the ones who claim to 'just want everyone to be nice' who take any disagreement as bullying.

In any case, how would we know who has complained on here unless they say so? As far as I can tell we don't even get told why a thread has been deleted, never mind who instigated it.

Marydoll Sat 30-Jan-21 22:27:02

Bellanonna, surely you are not implying that there are posters who deliberately report others out of malice? ☹

Meryl Streep, you are brave posting that!

It was me who started the thread when jingl was banned and it ran to the full 1000 posts.

I think there were one or two comments from HQ about their rules etc., etc., and it was obvious that although the thread generated a lot of support, the powers that be were not going to change their minds.

At no point were there any threats of deleting the thread and at times it descended into the usual hilarity that was part of GN in those days.

I have seen a poster play the bully card and stating that they are reporting the post/ posts.

I’ve been a member for about 8 years- don’t post regularly, but do on occasion if I feel I’ve got something interesting to contribute. I do enjoy reading the Good Morning and Soops kitchen threads however.
I have noticed though that things have not been the same since a particular poster starting roughly in the Spring of last year, rattled quite a few cages, deliberately it seemed to me, and quite a few of the founder members were suspended or given warnings which seemed totally unwarranted in my view considering the poster was seemingly being deliberately provocative.
Said poster seems to no longer be with us, but could be I suppose, under a new name of course, although a very distinctive style was perceived from he/she by many.
Lots of deletions occurred during this time and I don’t feel that the confidence to post as freely before this time has re- appeared.
This is a shame as the spontaneity and willingness to share and genuinely help others was what made Gransnet the welcoming site it was, I feel.
I hope it can re-appear as we all need a friend and a confidant, whether actual or virtual, especially in these socially distant and difficult times.

Past caring now what HQ think. After all, they've treated some well respected long time posters with contempt. Sauce for the goose and all that.
